I can live anywhere in the Uk...

... can you help me find a 3 or 4 bed detached house with some character (and large garden or land) for £250,000. I know it’s asking a lot! We would like something different and not new build and it can be rural, but not in a dreadful area!

If you were open to the idea of NI, then Hollywood, Bangor, South Belfast would be the places to look. Higher property prices, but generally there's a much more accepting, tolerant and diverse attitude here than in some other parts of NI. My friends are a mixed race couple and very happy living here.

LifeChoices · 28/01/2021 19:45

Thank you everyone! Land isn’t a must. But a big garden is. We are familiar with Scotland so really like the idea of Inverclyde or Argyll. 3 beds would be fine.

Carmarthenshire for the property. It’s often overlooked in favour of Pembrokeshire.
I couldn’t comment on what it would be like for a mixed race family though.

Darklane · 28/01/2021 20:08

What do you class as a big garden?
We have three acres but so much can be hard work if you don’t have grazing animals, which we do.

LifeChoices · 28/01/2021 20:09

Half an acre would be lovely! But I realise we will most probably need to settle for less.

What about here? Derry is a lovely city. Very cosmopolitan, no issue with mixed race families etc. Very arty, and beautiful Donegal at your doorstep

When my sister was looking for similar it came down to Carmarthenshire / Ceredigion or Lincolnshire.

Loshad · 28/01/2021 21:12

Property historically very cheap in lincolnshire and stoke.
Not expensive also around the M62 corridor from the A1M junction east towards Hull but look very carefully at flood risks, lots of big rural properties though with decent gardens

Do-er upper in Halifax (I think Wheatley is okay) www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/78352615#/

wow the (good) price of those new houses in derry. I'm in a shabby terraced 3 bed in dublin 860sq foot, we are tripping over each other, saying excuse me excuse me getting to the kettle. I'd love to live in a luxurious, spacious new build. I've no pretentious notions about living in a period home.
MadamBatty · 28/01/2021 22:50

Owllovestea, snap. We may be bidding for the same houses.

sawdustformypony · 28/01/2021 22:58

Don’t move to parts of Wales where the influx of non-Welsh speakers is damaging to our language . There are lots of as cheap areas in the uk where the Brythonic language has been lost centuries ago

Snowdonia.

Wales seems fairly cheap for some lovely character cottages and you have the mountains all around you. Absolute bliss!

MinnieMountain · 29/01/2021 09:27

Do you really think it’s getting worse @sawdustformypony?

The provision for Welsh in schools and willingness of new people to learn Welsh seems to have improved since I grew up in Pembrokeshire.

www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/86313661#/ @frogswimming missing the point all together here but not sure I could live with address that includes the words manly pump. I bet it stinks Grin
