And all the people whinging about it with pasta- have you lived under a rock for the past 30 years?

Why do you think all Italian restaurants serve garlic bread.

This website is too much sometimes!!!

@JimmyTheWeed

Shinyletsbebadguys Your mention of 'faux horror at double carbs' reminded me of an incident that happened many years ago, when Woolworths were still around. I went in the in in-store cafe for lunch, and asked for a jacket potato with tuna mayonnaise. The lady who served me said 'Would you like salad or chips with it?'. Chips?! With a jacket potato? I was Hmm and Grin.
Oh I don't know , I'm sure I used to eat hangover jacket potatoes and chips in Safeway (hah showing my age there) cafe when I was a student. Then again I also ate cheese muffins with cheese added on the top so fairly sure there was no hope for me as a student and my university diet should be used as a warning image on some form of NHS campaign.

Sadly now I have become unutterably boring and don't eat bread ,potatoes or anything like that.

The cheese though..the love of my life.Grin

Do all Italian restaurants in Italy serve garlic bread with pasta?

I'm not holier than thou about carbs, I just find bread and pasta too stodgy.

Hahabonk · 26/01/2021 20:46

Honestly the worst thing about becoming a parent has been having to start sharing a standard supermarket garlic bread between three, not two people.

Gah81 · 26/01/2021 20:46

3 of us.

Another no garlic bread with pasta person here. Too many carbs. Half Italian though so may be something to do with that - none of my Italian cousins can get their head around the pasta/garlic bread combo. It is just a LOT.

CoffeeRunner · 26/01/2021 20:49

2 or 3.

MrsPernicious · 26/01/2021 20:49

Three one a bad day, never with pasta.
Probably six on a good day.

roarfeckingroarr · 26/01/2021 20:50

Either one each or one between the two of us. We're both slim and very active.

PLAYJAJADINGDONG · 26/01/2021 21:02

Oh I'm glad I started this thread - it's given me a proper chuckle on an otherwise miserable evening!

Can report that:

My shopbought garlic bread (from Iceland no less, was delicious, heartily recommend) had 8 slices per baguette.

There were no leftovers. The dog even had one nobbly end bit after DS had licked the butter off.

Glad to see that the majority of MN has similar carb-loving tendencies.

I am Irish though, most of the meals I was reared on included two types of spud and a slice of buttered white bread to clean the plate with 😂.

DamsonBramble · 26/01/2021 21:04

I like it with chilli and rice

MrsPernicious · 26/01/2021 21:15

I have DC, foster DC and Step DC, I'm sure there have been days when I threw 4 baguettes on the table and ignored what happened. Other days it is naice homemade garlic bread.
Thank goodness they have grown up and three quarters have left home.

3JsMa · 26/01/2021 21:24

1 for me and 2 young DC
My 2 teenagers prefer one each as they think the end bits are poisonous.Hmm

BigBadVoodooHat · 26/01/2021 21:30

Yeah I've always found it weird how people want garlic bread with spag bol. Just no need.

Why does it have to be a ‘need’?

It’s perfectly valid to eat something as a ‘want’. The pleasure of food is often a matter of indulging a ‘want’ rather than merely fulfilling a basic physiological ‘need‘.

Though of course, on MN, there is a notable contingent that recoils in horror at the prospect of any indulgence in pleasurable mastication, any admission of bodily pleasure, or any evidence of the fact of bodily processes. Strict utilitarianism is the only acceptable form of living to half the joy-voids on MN.

Does anyone remember a really cheap restaurant chain called Brewers Fayre? I remember them serving lasagne with chips and garlic bread.

BringPizza · 26/01/2021 21:36

Not with spag bol, just the bol thanks. I'm not averse to double carbs but that's just a bit much to coordinate for me, I'd end up wearing it.

I never heard of it until I saw it on here. It is possible to enjoy a meal without having some sort of bread with it. Unless its soup.

Im well aware a lot of people indulge their 'wants' when it comes to food. It's not a secret.

I reserve the right to think it's weird.

christmasathomeagain · 26/01/2021 21:43
  1. We get duo packs and they serve 4 of us.
MrsAvocet · 26/01/2021 21:46

We had spag bol and garlic bread for dinner today. Tesco's cheapest garlic bread for us as its dairy free and my DS is allergic. 9 slices for 32p, what's not to like.😁
I do draw the line at gatlic bread with pizza though. Back in the days when we could eat out that was often a bit of a dilemma for me as there's a restaurant near us that does the best garlic bread I've ever tasted, but also some of the nicest pizzas that I've had outside Italy. Which is odd, as it isn't an Italian restaurant, but there you go. I admit that on occasion I have been unable to choose and had both but I usually regret it afterwards!

Winterpaw · 26/01/2021 21:51

@Sendingasurprise

Àre people sharing between five meaning 'shop-bought' garlic bread...or a proper baguette sliced, garlic-cloved, buttered and popped in the oven at home?

If the shop-bought ones (shudder!), I would do one per three people. With pasta or chilli is fine, but needs plenty of green salad to
cut the richness. Never garlic bread with pizza. Like bread on bread (double shudder!).

Home-made garlic bread...(shudder-free!)....I'd make one baguette for every eight people. Or half for four if just using up stale bread. Ciabatta... would serve one per six people, as it's shorter but wider.

GrinGrinGrinI cant tell which posts are serious now and which ones are ironic!

I hope you mean winter salad and not one of those (shudder) ghastly green salads, shop bought (double shudder), chlorinated and out of season (triple shudder) GrinGrinGrin

If you're shocked by the prospect of garlic bread and pasta (shudder) this isn't the thread for you my friend! Ditto if you only eat raw butter, sourdough, pink garlic, san Marzano tomatoes and not a morsel of mass produced stuff etc etc BiscuitBiscuitBiscuit

MyHairNeedsASnip · 26/01/2021 22:00
  1. It used to be just the 2 of us but then we had a child that has the audacity to love garlic bread. She won't eat the end bits, so I get stuck with them because I'm a martyr.
HopingForOurRainbowBaby · 26/01/2021 22:01

Just me 🐷

CherryBlossomTree7 · 26/01/2021 22:06

One stick would do three of us. Sometimes two of us.

Think some people on here would have a heart attack if they saw the triple carbs I sometimes have...lasagne, chips and garlic bread Shock maybe some of the bitter ones on here would say that will give me a heart attack Grin
