I’ve had my second vaccine and I feel horrendous

Absolutely bloody awful. Exactly like the flu. I had no problem after my first and I’m very pro vaccine so this is not a “don’t get the vaccine” post. Just be aware you might need a day off afterwards.

Had the vaccine at 8ish last night

  • woke up around 3 with a headache
  • woke up again at 6 with severe muscle aches all over
  • fever then chills, fever then chills on and off all day
  • vertigo and the room spinning when I turn over in bed
  • appetite is fine, I’ve still been hungry
  • very sore arm (same as the first time)

I’m hoping it’s going to be gone by tomorrow morning but I’m feeeling bloody sorry for myself

I was so upset as she could have died as people have after the vaccine

No. More accurately in a cohort of over 90s in poor health some diied in the time period after the first vaccine. There was no evidence this was related to the vaccine.

All flu vaccines come with this warning - most people are fine, others get a bit of a sore are or mild flu symptoms, a small percentage get very flu like symptoms for a day or two.

Please don't scare monger like this.

OverTheRainbowLiesOz · 24/01/2021 21:02

Elderly Dad just had a longer sleep the morning after and woke up feeling fine. No other reaction.

EdwardCullensBiteOnTheSide · 24/01/2021 21:02

It's strange that no other vaccines have such strong side effects though isn't it?

Useful to know what side effects people are getting OP. I had my first Pfizer this week. I felt rubbish the next day, as of coming dish with a heavy cold.

LemonadeFromLemons · 24/01/2021 21:03

Just adding for anyone concerned.

Two relatives have had Pfizer vaccines.

The one who has had second dose and is elderly had a tender arm for a day after their first and had flu like symptoms for 48 hours after their second.

Other has only had one dose so far, is young (healthcare worker) and had a tender arm for 48 hours after.

C152 · 24/01/2021 21:03

Or a week off. My mum suffered really badly with every side effect listed for the astrazeneca vaccine (www.gov.uk/government/publications/regulatory-approval-of-covid-19-vaccine-astrazeneca/information-for-uk-recipients-on-covid-19-vaccine-astrazeneca). She couldn't get out of bed or eat anything for 3 days; only managing sips of water. She is getting better now, but is still very unwell with side effects.

Forewarned is forearmed. If you've had bad reactions to vaccinations in the past, you should let your GP or the contact at the vaccination centre know; and if you have elderly parents, you may want to make sure they have someone nearby who can help them, if they end up suffering side effects.

reesewithoutaspoon · 24/01/2021 21:04

Have you ever had the flu vaccine? I felt a little rubbish after that and both DH and I had really sore arms. Much more sore than my arm from the Pfizer.
lambo88 · 24/01/2021 21:07

I've heard this can happen after the 2nd phizer vaccine and lasts for around 2 days

EdwardCullensBiteOnTheSide · 24/01/2021 21:07

@stormer yes I have the flu vaccine every year and never have any side effects. I did feel rubbish after the pneumonia vaccine but nothing like op describes.

Tanfastic · 24/01/2021 21:08

There can be side effects with any vaccine. I've had loads of different vaccines in my life and this is the first time with a vaccine I've had any side effects other than a sore arm. Because i've never had a reaction I wasn't really expecting this one to be any different and didn't feel the need to read the leaflet, obviously, I was just so relieved to get it. So when I woke up feeling like absolute shit and feeling sick, the first thought was "what the fuck have I eaten" ...I actually didn't at first attribute it to the covid vaccine I'd had.

Stormer · 24/01/2021 21:09

@EdwardCullensBiteOnTheSide I’ve certainly felt a lot worse after this one than I have after any other vaccination (cough, headache, huge fatigue). But I’m not reading anything sinister into it.

QueenPawPaws · 24/01/2021 21:11

I will still be having it but doing the same as the flu jab and trying to have it on a Friday so if I'm unwell I can be off work!

Tanfastic · 24/01/2021 21:11

No me neither, I don't think any of us are....are we? I just put it down to my immune system getting a kicking and doing its job.

Kidsarekids · 24/01/2021 21:12

I had first dose of Oxford on Weds, had a headache in the evening, took paracetamol and drank plenty of water and felt fine the next day, slight ache in my arm for a couple of days. Feel so relieved to have had it, so worth the discomfort for sure. Don’t hesitate, feel so fortunate that I will hopefully have some protection as I am in the vulnerable group due to age.

oneglassandpuzzled · 24/01/2021 21:13

@480Widdio

A reaction to the vaccine is completely normal.Shouldn’t be to severe for the majority of people. The body is building immunity.

It does tell you this in the leaflet you get given.

When I was in the Army I remember being poorly for several days after the Yellow Fever Vaccine,no drama,we just got on with it.

No idea why there is so much hysteria around the Covid vaccine!! It’s bloody ridiculous.

Most people are being factual not hysterical. My daughter is a medic and my mother’s a former clinical nursing manager. Both glad to have the Pfizer injection and neither given to hysteria.
knittingaddict · 24/01/2021 21:14

@IndecentFeminist

I've only had dose 1 and have such a sore arm. Haven't experienced it before, and I have intramuscular injections every 8 weeks for b12 which are apparently pretty nasty.
The sore arm is perfectly normal. I had a flu vaccine a few weeks ago and had a sore arm for a day or so. It is nothing.
JellyBabiesFan · 24/01/2021 21:17

Was this the fizzer vaccine or the Cambridge one?

Mincepie5 · 24/01/2021 21:17

@Gazelley

Sorry should have said I did have mine 21 days apart.

I work in the vaccine centre and had one of the left over doses at the end of the day (we never throw any away). It was snowing heavily and we had lots of pre booked appointments who didn’t turn up and their vaccine had already been “cooked”

I phoned up today to see if I could get the second vaccine as I thought there would be some no shows due to the snow. I said it might mean one less healthcare worker to pass on the virus but they weren’t having any of it. At least you’re one of the few people who’ve had it 21 days apart. I never would have had the first if I’d have known I would be refused the second dose on time.

Better to wait until the government realise they’ve messed up yet again allow for evidence based practice.

EdwardCullensBiteOnTheSide · 24/01/2021 21:18

@stormer no i wasn't meaning it in a conspiracy type way, just makes you wonder why the vaccine does this, and if its actually safe for everyone.

knittingaddict · 24/01/2021 21:19

Also my dad is 89 and my mum 85. They had the vaccine a couple of weeks ago. They reported a sore arm and nothing else at all. They are fine. I really can't see the point of threads like this. "Vaccine causes mild side effects considerably better than the illness itself". Big deal.

Stormer · 24/01/2021 21:19

Tan my comment about not reading anything sinister into it was in response to a PP saying that it’s strange that no other vaccines have such strong side effects. I don’t think they were necessarily implying something sinister either, but for the sake of lack of ambiguity...!

knittingaddict · 24/01/2021 21:20

Oh, you were wondering were you? That's what conspiracy theorists do all the time. Just wonder.

Hankunamatata · 24/01/2021 21:20

At work 2 people had the reaction you describe after the first jab, the other 30 odd us us were fine. Everyone has a different immune response. Perhaps you are having a stronger immune reaction

meow1989 · 24/01/2021 21:21

I had my first Pfizer vaccine yesterday and was all prepared to feel awful but bar half hour or so of nausea later in the day and slightly sore muscles (less ache, more tiring quicker soreness, though I do have a 2 year old so it might be lugging him about) . My injection site isn't even that tender - just adding my experience for anyone worrying about side effects.

Fwiw I booked on a Saturday so that dh would be about for ds if I did feel awful as have friends who did.
