I’ve had my second vaccine and I feel horrendous

Gazelley · 24/01/2021 18:40

Absolutely bloody awful. Exactly like the flu. I had no problem after my first and I’m very pro vaccine so this is not a “don’t get the vaccine” post. Just be aware you might need a day off afterwards.

Had the vaccine at 8ish last night

  • woke up around 3 with a headache
  • woke up again at 6 with severe muscle aches all over
  • fever then chills, fever then chills on and off all day
  • vertigo and the room spinning when I turn over in bed
  • appetite is fine, I’ve still been hungry
  • very sore arm (same as the first time)

I’m hoping it’s going to be gone by tomorrow morning but I’m feeeling bloody sorry for myself

It is a useful post, thanks for the heads up OP.

FfsDoE · 24/01/2021 23:56

I had the Pfizer 1st jab with no side effects beyond a sore arm. Have had covid and tested positive for antibodies. Everyone reacts differently.

birchtree23 · 24/01/2021 23:58

I had my 1st dose of the Pfizer and my arms still sore after 3 weeks!!!
Is anyone the same? And my glands are swollen

Thanks for posting, I had covid in March was hospitalised twice, and now have ongoing symptoms, so I'll get prepared for the side effects.

I'm not classed as a risk group so assuming I'm far down on the list at 46?

CatVsChristmasTree · 25/01/2021 00:15

@percheron67

Sorry it has affected you nastily. I am due to be contacted by Surgery for mine anytime. On TV it looked as though it was quite a fierce injection - more forceful than the usual one! Did it feel more aggressive. Hope you improve by tomorrow.
It really isn't more fierce than any other vaccine injection, I gave 40+ each of flu and covid vaccines yesterday (separate clinics) and there's no difference in the technique or needle size used. I've given hundreds of Covid vaccines in the last week (and watched just as many being given) and most people have said they barely felt it. The odd person has felt it a bit more. Mine stung a bit more than I expected, but so did the flu jab I had last year. Some people just seem to be more sensitive, or maybe it depends exactly where its given.

I had a sore throat for a few days after mine (no one else I know had that one) along with a mild fever and felt tired and achey, while some colleagues had no side effects other than a sore arm. We do warn people they will likely feel poorly for a day or two, but we say the same with the flu jab and I've never had side effects from that. I'm quite happy to postpone my 2nd as long as possible!

Completely agree with posters who are saying that people should not be censored for posting honestly about their experiences of vaccine side effects. I think that trying to silence such posts risks fuelling anti-vaxx conspiracy theories. And if side effects are a significant possibility, people need to know that so that they can plan around it. Anecdotally, side effects do appear to be more common in younger people. Neither of my parents, who are in their eighties, noticed any side effects from their first dose (Pfizer) other than possibly feeling slightly more tired than usual for a few hours in my Mum's case.

ADealingMummy · 25/01/2021 00:26

I had the Pfizer jab yesterday morning and so far feel absolutely fine.
My husband had the Oxford Vaccine, he experienced a temp of over 39, extreme chills lasting only one night.
My Mum had the Oxford Vaccine (she is nurse vaccinator herself) she had a mild fever. Absolutely fine really.
It’s better than getting bad covid.

JengaJanga · 25/01/2021 00:31

Well lucky you.

Im CEV, been fully shielding since March and would 100 million % rather be in ur position right now!!!!

Haven't had my first yet!

Ozgirl75 · 25/01/2021 05:53

My parents had their jab on Saturday and my mum said she woke up in the night feeling sick and faint and then felt rubbish on Sunday. Dad was fine. Interestingly my mum thinks she had Covid early in the year as she had an awful cold and had to sleep sitting up as she was so out of breath. Didn’t test as it was back in March. Dad had it too but very mildly but it’s interesting that she’s the one with the worse reaction.
She’s happy about it though, just pleased to get them done.

Toobuktim · 25/01/2021 06:22

Interesting to read about all the experiences, I’m due my vaccine tomorrow morning - don’t know which one I’m getting though. Surprisingly the few people who were getting the Oxford one were told in advance. I’ve not previously had bad reactions to vaccines, so am optimistic that I’ll be ok. Am hoping so as I’m wotkjng Wednesday!

Arrierttyclock · 25/01/2021 06:55

I've heard the second Pfizer is quite brutal. I had the first and was fine but my husband had the Oxford and was so ill after!

Gazelley · 25/01/2021 07:14

Update: I feel SO much better! Slept like a log, woke up with a vague background headache but temp is back to normal, muscle aches have gone, vertigo has gone, I just feel a bit washed out.

So glad I had it done and despite the side effects it was well worth it

OP posts:
Riddlediddle · 25/01/2021 07:44

@Gazelley great to hear. Ive also woken up today feeling almost back to normal just a little achy. Id take just over 24 hours of feeling bad again if it means protection from covid x

zzizzer · 25/01/2021 07:58

Seriously OP, thanks for this thread - when it comes round I won't worry half so much about feeling awful afterwards knowing that most people do.

Oblomov20 · 25/01/2021 08:02

I find it helpful. It's good to know. It's not an anti vaccine post. Hmm

Mincepie5 · 25/01/2021 08:08

Yes, glad you’re feeling better and I hope this thread continues to inform us.

Nocaloriesinchocolate · 25/01/2021 08:19

Very informative thread. DS says he felt lousy for a day after his first jab (front line worker). DH and I are in the same age-related category and we're hoping we could be done at the same time for convenience but this thread has made me think again. We have 6 cats and someone needs to be fit to look after them.

OhWhyNot · 25/01/2021 08:24

Glad you feeling better op

Everyone I know who has had it even if poorly after are very very glad they have had it. I feel so relieved

Let’s hope as many people can get vaccinated ASAP

endlesscraziness · 25/01/2021 08:50

A few fact for you:

The vaccine doesn't contain the virus

It takes weeks for it to offer full protection

If you get COVID close to the vaccine, it is coincidence. Community spread is high, so catching it at any point shouldn't be a surprise

You may still transmit the virus so you still need to follow social distancing measures and where masks whilst so many are not vaccinated.

You still need to get tested if you have symptoms (though anything up to 48 hours post jab should be ignored, if those symptoms are still there 48 hours after the vaccine, then get tested

You cannot catch COVID from the vaccine

SaltyTootsieToes · 25/01/2021 08:53

To put this into perspective, remember what we’re told can happen with our babies when we take them for their jabs. Is this much more than that?

For reminder, see attached

DenisetheMenace · 25/01/2021 09:42

Gazelley
Absolutely bloody awful. Exactly like the flu“

Have you had your flu jab this year? If not, you could actually have flu?

WhoWants2Know · 25/01/2021 10:18

I had mine yesterday morning and was fine up until about 12 hours later. Then pain, nausea, running hot and cold. My kidneys and bladder are sore and I needed the toilet every half hour or so through the night.

I woke up and went to call in sick and found that the other two team members who had the jab yesterday are also in bed with buckets. But if it's only a couple of days, then it's well worth it.

Ozgirl75 · 25/01/2021 10:41

My mum just emailed me and said she now also feels totally back to normal. My dad also had a queasy and light headed day and is also now fine. So just over 24 hours basically. Totally worth it!

AdditionalCharacter · 25/01/2021 10:53

Feeling better today after an awful night of a temp over 39, and yes I took paracetamol, I'm not an idiot.

Seem to be over the worse hopefully, just a sore arm now.

Cissyandflora · 25/01/2021 10:54

With the infection numbers as they could it be that you all caught Covid? It might sound coincidental but the infection rates are huge so it makes more sense. You’re all describing Covid symptoms.
