AirPods - are they worth it?

kaleishorrid · 23/01/2021 00:26

Just that really - just had a drunken conversation with my sister who said she didn't know she needed her AirPods until she had them. I have some cheap Bluetooth headphones which are a bit uncomfortable and are not great - I can't leave the room without them cutting out. Should I invest in AirPods?

Depends if you can afford them I suppose?
I have some,I think they’re brilliant. No tangled up cables and the charging case is useful!
I’m often cooking/cleaning and chatting to friends or listening to a podcast.

BringBackDoves · 23/01/2021 00:33

I resisted for ages. DH bought me some for Christmas. I bloody love them now!

TK Maxx do loads for really good prices.

EduCated · 23/01/2021 00:36

Personally I really like mine and am very glad I treated myself. I’ve not had other Bluetooth headphones so can’t compare, but I find they work very intuitively (e.g. taking one ear out will pause what you’re listening to, putting it back in will play again).

ThatDamnKrampus · 23/01/2021 00:37

I have some cheap copies (my ipad recognizes them as airpods) and they work great. I do find if I leave my phone downstairs and go upstairs my buds cut out and in) but I find them great for cooking and listening to audio books. I'm not sure airpods would fare any better when leaving a room?

Oblahdeeoblahdoe · 23/01/2021 00:39

Can you give us a link @ThatDamnKrampus?

Only thing to watch with airpods that I was disappointed with, they don't work as earphones and microphone on a windows pc/laptop for things like zoom calls. You can use them as earphones and quality is excellent but need to use your laptop microphone (unless you switch to AG headset mode where the sound quality is terrible).

@kaleishorrid I imagine pp means Bluetooth pods not Apple AirPods.

kaleishorrid · 23/01/2021 00:53

I don't want to waste my money but I remember when iPods first came out very techie members of the family were all like "oh you don't want to waste your money on an iPod you should just buy an iriver(?) It's technically superior - guess what? They all ended up buying iPods. Despite owning his second Mac my dh is now very anti apple and insisted that his Samsung is much better than my iPhone. That's great but I can't even answer his Samsung when it rings and I'm not stupid. My elderly mother can use an iPhone and an iPad - for all their faults and for whatever reasons you may not like Apple ( and I do get frustrated when they stop supporting older models) the design is intuitive and it works. My cheap head phones are not intuitive to use - they are a pain to set up EACH time I want to use them. I think I've talked myself into AirPods. Before I research - are they all the same ?

AirPods are def worth it,they easily pair, the audio for phone calls is excellent. They work all the time

thelegohooverer · 23/01/2021 01:11

I was like your dsis. I got them as a gift and privately thought they were a silly extravagance until I tried them. Now I love them.

I’ve never tried cheaper ones so I’ve no idea how they compare

SpudsandGravy · 23/01/2021 01:16

If you've not absolutely decided then also consider Aftershokz bone conducting headphones. I absolutely love mine! They're WiFi and I can't imagine ever moving to anything else now. I've never been able to get any kind of in-ear headphone to stay in my ear.

Another yes vote. I’d never even considered them but OH got me some for Christmas, absolutely love them! (And have been a godsend for home learning)

Robbybobtail · 23/01/2021 01:59

They are very good however dd has now lost two pairs and has gone back to the £30 wired ones. They are very easy to lose (and that’s even with the tracking app)

HerNameIsIncontinentiaButtocks · 23/01/2021 02:08

I've got the originals and the Pros, and they are pretty good. Don't expect to be able to wander around the house while they're connected to something that stays behind, though. They have good range for bluetooth, but not miraculous - they can't stay connected to your phone downstairs while you pop to the loo upstairs.

How good they are to wear depends entirely on the shapes of your ears. The normal ones are exactly the same shape as the wired headphones, so if those work for you then the airpods will be better - less likely to pop out as there aren't any wires. I can run in mine.

The Pros have excellent sound quality, but are more prone to easing their way out of my ears. I need to poke them back in every now and then if I'm moving, and the jaw movement from eating squeezes them out quickly.

Both are great for transparent outdoors sound, so pretty safe for running/cycling/walking in public - with the airpods it's because they don't seal your ears, with the Pros they have an optional mode where the microphones add the outside noise to the sound stream.

I've lost one pair, and despite the price immediately went out and bought another pair - that's how useful they are to me. Naturally two months later they brought out the Pros...

Astella22 · 23/01/2021 02:38

I also am a big fan, I must have smallish ears because almost any other earphones either hurt or would fall out but the apple ones stay nicely in place and the quality is great. The one and only downside is the price

WhipperSnapperSteve · 23/01/2021 02:48

I prefer Anker SoundCore Life, and they work with everything.

Rockbird · 23/01/2021 03:26

Yes, absolutely love them, use them all the time including right now to listen to the radio or an audio book and I find them comfortable to sleep in. I have the standard pair for the exact reason that Incontinentia (Grin) mentions, I detest the in ear shape.

I tried all sorts of wireless earphones before caving and getting these and haven't regretted them for a second.

Nat6999 · 23/01/2021 03:44

I've got the Samsung Air buds, they are great, not as expensive as the Apple ones.

Remaker · 23/01/2021 03:53

I love mine, have had them about 8 months and use them all the time. We have a single storey house and I can leave my phone anywhere inside and keep listening, even outside to put something in the bin or hang the washing out.

BarbaraofSeville · 23/01/2021 06:30

I have some cheap ones from Amazon and they're fine.

Stay connected for a good few metres, connect instantly with my phone each time, sound quality good enough for me, case keeps them charged and only needs plugging in every couple of weeks or so even though I listen to them for a couple of hours every day, seamlessly answer the phone with a short press on my right ear if someone rings me while I'm listening to music (that was a shock the first time it happened, I didn't even know you could use them for phone calls, I got them for listening to music while running without getting tangled up in cables when I wanted to take a layer off).

Maybe if you're not sure OP, you could get some cheap ones and if you like the idea but feel you want Apple ones, buy when you see an offer, or ask for Christmas or they need replacing etc?

But I'm perfectly happy with my cheap ones and can't see how Apple ones at nearly ten times the price would be significantly better.

FlowerFluffer · 23/01/2021 06:38

I love mine.

user1493413286 · 23/01/2021 06:41

I wasn’t fussed about then until I borrowed DHs a few times; now I love them. They never fall out, I can walk all around the house and the quality is great

Sometimesonly · 23/01/2021 06:44

I love mine - they aren't real ones though, cost 24 euros from Aldi but the sound is great.

Sunflowergirl1 · 23/01/2021 06:50

DH bought me some for Xmas..the Pro version. I had some cheap blue tooth ones before which cost £30 and to be honest whilst the AirPods are better, not massively irritation for me is they don't fit in one ear so I need to try some different size buds but they are £8 a set which is expensive

As ever with Apple though the quality is excellent
