AirPods - are they worth it?

kaleishorrid · 23/01/2021 00:26

Just that really - just had a drunken conversation with my sister who said she didn't know she needed her AirPods until she had them. I have some cheap Bluetooth headphones which are a bit uncomfortable and are not great - I can't leave the room without them cutting out. Should I invest in AirPods?

I'm another who wasn't sure but is now converted. I got them about a year ago and use them all the time now, for audio books, phone calls, endless zoom activities. They stay paired with my phone anywhere in the house and all the way down the garden (about 20m). I work in a small industrial unit and they stay paired all round the building there, I can go down from my office to the kitchen with them still in range. They also work perfectly with my Windows laptop, I use them a lot for zoom on it. I'd say the only downside is they catch in my hair and get knocked out if I'm doing something more active (yoga/gardening) without my hair tied back.

MadisonAvenue · 23/01/2021 08:29

They have good range for bluetooth, but not miraculous - they can't stay connected to your phone downstairs while you pop to the loo upstairs.

Mine do. For instance, I can leave my phone in the kitchen while I vacuum and stay connected all through our three-storey house.

Dd has some and loves them. She uses them for almost all of her online lectures.

She has tiny ears and they are the only ear buds she has managed to get on with. They actually stay in and are comfortable apparently, even when walking.

Champagneforeveryone · 23/01/2021 08:52

We all (DH, DS and I) have a pair. I raved about mine to DH and said I couldn't imagine how I'd lived without them while he nodded and rolled his eyes.

He got a pair last Christmas and is instantly besotted with them. He now cannot imagine how he ever managed without them Wink

The only thing worth mentioning about genuine AirPods is that, while you can use them with non Apple products, DS has found he's lost some functionality when he switched to an Android phone.

JustAmotherOne · 23/01/2021 09:20

I love my AirPods so much.

Was totally unconvinced and pit of love with all things Bluetooth headphoney after the faff and fiddle and annoyance of charging, connecting etc.

The airpod pros are friffing amazing. Effortlessly connect with the right device, even with lots of apple devices nearby. Totally intuitive to use.

The transparent/noise cancelling options are so very good.

I use transparent to listen to meditation outside to hear the birds, and on business calls so that I can hear my own voice properly.

Total game changer.

bluebluezoo · 23/01/2021 09:28

Another who didn’t realise how much I needed some until I got them..

They have good range for bluetooth, but not miraculous - they can't stay connected to your phone downstairs while you pop to the loo upstairs

I can. My house isn’t small but I often find myself chatting on the phone while doing housework and realise I’m upstairs sorting the washing and I’ve left the phone downstairs.

I normally wouldn’t fork out but I found myself spending £15 on wired headphones every few months. The apple wired headphones I don’t get on with, i like the little rubber bits so when the pros came out I went for it. Love them, and I actually lose them less than wired ones.

The noise cancelling is great too.

jenniuol · 23/01/2021 09:42

I love mine. I resisted for ages because of the cost but got some for Christmas from dh and they have definitely been worth it. I like to wear headphones when cleaning etc and the wire used to drive me crazy, I was constantly catching it on things and yanking them out my ears. I can leave my phone in the living room and go all over the house (not massive tbf!) and out to the bin and they don’t cut out.

Xyzzzzz · 23/01/2021 09:51

Yes I love them.

pronxcessxo · 23/01/2021 09:51

@Sunflowergirl1

DH bought me some for Xmas..the Pro version. I had some cheap blue tooth ones before which cost £30 and to be honest whilst the AirPods are better, not massively irritation for me is they don't fit in one ear so I need to try some different size buds but they are £8 a set which is expensive

As ever with Apple though the quality is excellent

the pros come with a smaller and a larger tip, have you looked in the box? mine were hidden under the cardboard insert but definitely there
bruffin · 23/01/2021 09:53

I've got the originals and the Pros, and they are pretty good. Don't expect to be able to wander around the house while they're connected to something that stays behind, though. They have good range for bluetooth, but not miraculous - they can't stay connected to your phone downstairs while you pop to the loo upstairs.
I have samsung buds plus and they reach all round my house and down my drive

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 23/01/2021 09:53

I love mine, although I still haven't got them to work with Teams for work. Unlike most earphones they stay in my ears and I love that they pair instantly with my phone. I'd definitely replace them if they packed up

Unalome · 23/01/2021 09:55

I’ve recently bought some enacfire headphones for using during workouts, and listening to podcasts/audiobooks etc, and found them really useful. They’re Bluetooth and have the charging case. I haven’t had them for long, but I’d be reluctant to spend money on AirPods now I’ve had these, although I haven’t had AirPods to compare to...

kaleishorrid · 23/01/2021 10:01

@Robbybobtail

They are very good however dd has now lost two pairs and has gone back to the £30 wired ones. They are very easy to lose (and that’s even with the tracking app)
Did she lose them because she put them down somewhere or because they fell out?

KarensChoppyBob · 23/01/2021 10:02

Can I ask the recent AirPod converts how the volume compares to the bigger, bassier headphones? I have wireless/Bluetooth big cushiony ones (not a tech description sorry) that cover the ear as I like to hear all the bass etc

What's the AirPod sound like? Specifically with music?

CormoranStrike · 23/01/2021 10:03

I love mine

sandgrown · 23/01/2021 10:15

My son pestered for some and they are one of the best presents I have ever bought him. They are never out of his ears!

Xiaoxiong · 23/01/2021 10:18

I love mine. I could never lose them because they are on my person at all times! Podcasts, audiobooks, music, the radio, zoom calls for work, being able to listen to exercise videos while the kids are in bed upstairs, the noise cancelling when the kids have online school...absolutely the best investment I have made in the last 12 months.

bottleofbeer · 23/01/2021 11:04

Absolutely yes and I'm generally not a big fan of Apple products. I borrowed my daughter's. Not only are they the only ones that properly fit my ears, the sound quality is amazing. When I use my own ones now (obviously not airpods) the sound is just so tinny and rubbish in comparison.

The only reason I never bought some is I'm absolutely terrible for losing things.

AnxiousSM · 23/01/2021 11:08

Love mine, they were a birthday gift and I truly didn’t know how much I needed them until I started using them.

KarensChoppyBob · 23/01/2021 11:09

Interesting, thank you!

ElleL91 · 23/01/2021 11:26

I've just bought some 2nd gen ones from Argos for £139.

I had some Christmas money left over so thought why not!

Glad I did deffo worth it, my DH bought me some cheapies last Xmas but they were rubbish.

Feels so much better being able to listen to music on my walks without the headphone cable getting tangled around my bag/coat and the way they rip out of your ears if you drop your phone haha.

If you can afford them then go for it

x

NewIdeasToday · 23/01/2021 11:35

Does anyone know if the AirPods Pro work with a laptop?

I just bought a pair of cheaper wireless earphones to use for conference calls. But they are really difficult to pair with my laptop. So I wondered if AirPods would be better.

Grateful for any advice. Thanks

bluebluezoo · 23/01/2021 12:06

Mine work fine with my macbook.

lambtonightok · 23/01/2021 12:21

I'm very tempted. Are any of you runners and do they feel secure?

MadisonAvenue · 23/01/2021 12:41

@lambtonightok

Yes, this was something I was concerned about but they feel very secure. My son uses them for running too and has had no problems.
