Vague recollections of a village in Wales

This has been bugging me for months so I'm hoping Mumsnet may help.

About 10 years ago DH and I drove from mid or north Wales (likely Aberystwyth or Machynlleth) to St David's, Angle or Newport. (We've done a few holidays around there, hence the vagueness.)

On the way south from Mach/Aberystwyth we stopped in a village I've never been able to find again. I don't think it was on the coast. Whilst there was a steepish slope, it may have sloped down to a river, there was no beach or harbour. So perhaps on an estuary.

There was a pub on the edge of the village , at the start of the village as you approach. A nice one, grey building with a garden or patio at the front. Two rooms inside, I think, the second was entered to the left of the bar.

The village itself in my memory was made of paths rather than roads. Really pretty small houses, maybe multi coloured. Lots were holiday lets. There may have been a small gallery, certainly pretty ornaments outside the houses. I don't remember any shops, this place was little, and as I say didn't seem to be accessible to cars once you got past the pub. At a guess I'd guess around 1 hour south of Aberystwyth, but could be a bit further south.

Does anyone have a clue where I might be talking about? DH thinks I've amalgamated some places, but my memories of these pretty cottages and pathways between them are real. I think!

Thank you!

Might have been St Dogmaels?

Notanorthadontist · 19/01/2021 23:37

Tresaith? More or less fits your description apart from the fact that it is on the coast and there is a beach!

CheshireSplat · 20/01/2021 16:35

Neither of those, but thank you both very much.

Llanberis?

Bloodybridget · 20/01/2021 16:57

Aberaeron is south of Aberystwyth and has lovely painted houses around the harbour and in other streets, but is not a small village. There are paths around the harbour area too, several fancy shops and probably galleries.

Bloodybridget · 20/01/2021 16:59

Sorry, just reread your post and you say no harbour Blush

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 20/01/2021 16:59

Was there a castle?

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 20/01/2021 17:03

Llanrhystud? You drive past the Black Lion pub, which has picnic tables at the front, as you enter the village and drive across a small bridge over a river?

SpanishChard · 20/01/2021 17:03

I lived in Lamphey, Pembrokeshire as a child. We had a modern house but parts were very pretty and the pub was a grey stone building. Just inland.

I don't expect it's your village but we left there when I was 5 and went back for the first time when I was mid 30s. There were a couple of things I remembered very vividly that were exactly how I recalled them.

Portmeirion?

Standrewsschool · 20/01/2021 17:13

Tregaron?

Covidcovid · 20/01/2021 17:19

Llechryd?

Covidcovid · 20/01/2021 17:27

Cilgarren or Cenarth

MrsDThomas · 20/01/2021 17:29

Llanberis and Portmeirion are in north Wales.

Covidcovid · 20/01/2021 17:32

There’s Llangrannog as well but that’s on the coast and has a beach.....

Fuckingcrustybread · 20/01/2021 17:38

Might it be Newcastle Emlyn?

Notanorthadontist · 20/01/2021 17:51

Wherever it is, it sounds lovely. I hope you find out, so I can visit!

Notanorthadontist · 20/01/2021 17:54

Newcastle Emlyn has lots of shops and pubs and no network of little paths round pretty painted houses, sadly!

LemonySippet · 20/01/2021 18:06

@Justwingingit2005

Portmeirion?
This would be my guess too. Much further North than your recollection but since you weren't so sure on the geography it could be right. It certainly fits a lot of your criteria...
peppermintteadrinker · 20/01/2021 18:08

Solva? Just outside at David's. Gorgeous village. Very steep hill and estuary

Muddywellies10 · 20/01/2021 18:11

Posssibly Creswell Quay if you were on your way to Angle.

justchecking1 · 20/01/2021 18:13

I think portmeirion too, but geographically in the wrong place!

justchecking1 · 20/01/2021 18:14

In fairness, most of rural Wales meets your description 😂

torquewench · 20/01/2021 18:14

Aberdaron?

CheshireSplat · 20/01/2021 19:21

These are all good and I've gone though them but none are right. It was really small... I do appreciate it though.

I need to dig out my hard drive backed up photos from then and have a look through....
