Vague recollections of a village in Wales

This has been bugging me for months so I'm hoping Mumsnet may help.

About 10 years ago DH and I drove from mid or north Wales (likely Aberystwyth or Machynlleth) to St David's, Angle or Newport. (We've done a few holidays around there, hence the vagueness.)

On the way south from Mach/Aberystwyth we stopped in a village I've never been able to find again. I don't think it was on the coast. Whilst there was a steepish slope, it may have sloped down to a river, there was no beach or harbour. So perhaps on an estuary.

There was a pub on the edge of the village , at the start of the village as you approach. A nice one, grey building with a garden or patio at the front. Two rooms inside, I think, the second was entered to the left of the bar.

The village itself in my memory was made of paths rather than roads. Really pretty small houses, maybe multi coloured. Lots were holiday lets. There may have been a small gallery, certainly pretty ornaments outside the houses. I don't remember any shops, this place was little, and as I say didn't seem to be accessible to cars once you got past the pub. At a guess I'd guess around 1 hour south of Aberystwyth, but could be a bit further south.

Does anyone have a clue where I might be talking about? DH thinks I've amalgamated some places, but my memories of these pretty cottages and pathways between them are real. I think!

Thank you!

I used to live in St Florence, Pembs which has some painted houses and a grey pub and a stream rather than a river with a path. But no steep hill.

SomersetHamlyn · 20/01/2021 19:32

Porthgain

CottonSock · 20/01/2021 19:34

Cilgerran?

pinbinpin · 20/01/2021 19:36

Really not Silva?

pinbinpin · 20/01/2021 19:36

Solva

CottonSock · 20/01/2021 19:41

www.moylgrove.wales/

rosy71 · 20/01/2021 19:42

Devil's Bridge?

LabCoatPocket · 20/01/2021 20:05

I thought Solva, I know that stretch quite well too. The pub, the estuary, the painted buildins...

thatgingergirl · 20/01/2021 20:06

I'd have said Solva too! Wonderful, atmospheric place.

Surinamtoad · 20/01/2021 20:38

Porthgain. Or Diana Cross?

Surinamtoad · 20/01/2021 20:40

Whoops, I meant Dinas Cross

DeeDimer · 20/01/2021 20:40

Cardigan or Newport?

CheshireSplat · 20/01/2021 21:36

Ok, I'll check Solva again. Smile We have a rug front he Solva Woollen Mill and I'm pretty sure it's not there....

I'm googling all the places suggested. Have a great itinerary for another time!

are you looking on google earth/streetview?

CheshireSplat · 20/01/2021 21:45

Not Silva. Much smaller. In my memory, the pub is the first thing then these tiny cottages and I dint remember roads, certainly they were tiny if there were any. You couldn't see the sea. After the houses there was a fence with (I would guess) a route to a footpath but I didnt get that far as i was either pregnant or DD1 was in the sling.

I have been on google maps and looked at all the contenders (I think) from Aberystwyth to st David's!

Definitely come back if you remember OP. I live near Aberystwyth and in some ways you describe my village but other parts sound nowhere similar so I'm intrigued!

CheshireSplat · 20/01/2021 21:52

Mejon, I will. DH thinks I've amalgamated various places but I'm sure I haven't. I've obviously misremembered something crucial!

Could you track your route on google earth? (I'm not place marking at all).

GirlCrush · 20/01/2021 21:59

Gwernogle?

wishywashywoowoo70 · 20/01/2021 22:14

Sounds a lot like Solva.

Though it could be lots of places in West Wales they're all gorgeous.

LadyLinnaeus · 20/01/2021 23:19

Nevern, Porthgain, Lawrenny, Manorbier, maybe Rosebush?

LadyLinnaeus · 20/01/2021 23:21

Also small two room pub in the Gwaun Valley?

LadyLinnaeus · 20/01/2021 23:22

Last go - Bosherston!

blanketyblankpen · 20/01/2021 23:25

Porthgain has a harbour?

Muddywellies10 · 21/01/2021 19:12

I thought possibly Lawrenny too @LadyLinnaeus! Or Puncheston?
