Vague recollections of a village in Wales

This has been bugging me for months so I'm hoping Mumsnet may help.

About 10 years ago DH and I drove from mid or north Wales (likely Aberystwyth or Machynlleth) to St David's, Angle or Newport. (We've done a few holidays around there, hence the vagueness.)

On the way south from Mach/Aberystwyth we stopped in a village I've never been able to find again. I don't think it was on the coast. Whilst there was a steepish slope, it may have sloped down to a river, there was no beach or harbour. So perhaps on an estuary.

There was a pub on the edge of the village , at the start of the village as you approach. A nice one, grey building with a garden or patio at the front. Two rooms inside, I think, the second was entered to the left of the bar.

The village itself in my memory was made of paths rather than roads. Really pretty small houses, maybe multi coloured. Lots were holiday lets. There may have been a small gallery, certainly pretty ornaments outside the houses. I don't remember any shops, this place was little, and as I say didn't seem to be accessible to cars once you got past the pub. At a guess I'd guess around 1 hour south of Aberystwyth, but could be a bit further south.

Does anyone have a clue where I might be talking about? DH thinks I've amalgamated some places, but my memories of these pretty cottages and pathways between them are real. I think!

Thank you!

"There may have been a small gallery, certainly pretty ornaments outside the houses"

this sounds like Porthgain - is a gallery there (but near the sea)

I really want to know now! We have had loads of holidays between St Davids and Tenby, is one of my favorite places - I don't know much nort of St Davids outskirts though.

I have no suggestions but I'm looking forward to googling all these places.

I’m just placemarking because I’m loving hearing all the names as I’m missing west Wales

Me as well, sigh!

Slightly north of where you are talking about (north of Aberystwyth but south of Machynlleth), but could it be Bow Street? It was my forgotten place once, I think because it's a village with a street name!

Pieceofpurplesky · 21/01/2021 20:21

Lampeter?

Tiredbadger · 21/01/2021 20:41

Trefin?

pinbinpin · 21/01/2021 20:54

Marloes?

Notanorthadontist · 21/01/2021 23:47

Llanychaer. South east of Fishguard?

Bobmonkfish · 21/08/2021 23:38

Where was it OP?!

Ouch44 · 21/08/2021 23:58

Yes where was it? Family live in the area and have driven that road many times but I have no clue!

Keladrythesaviour · 22/08/2021 00:00

Beddgelert? Not exactly on a hill, but if you came down from Snowdon way it's hilly... There's a path off, and a river? Lots of pubs though.

Arseholery · 22/08/2021 00:07

I think I'm too north, but perhaps Criccieth?

GigantosaurusRex · 22/08/2021 00:11

This is the gallery in Solva

pommepommefrites · 22/08/2021 00:28

Laugharne?

Hen2018 · 22/08/2021 00:30

Solva has a harbour.

Corris? And you’re muddling the painted houses with those in Machynlleth?

CoffeeSonata · 22/08/2021 01:05

I wondered Gwaun Valley. But no gallery and would you have been driving through? Just outside Newport fits description very well. Llangaer possibly

BlackAlys · 22/08/2021 05:20

Place marking

Kjr33 · 22/08/2021 06:01

Painted houses sounds like new quay but I don’t think you’d accidentally miss the sea!

GoWalkabout · 22/08/2021 06:18

I hate to be team dh but memories are frequently fictional and amalgamated so I think he might be right.

MyOtherProfile · 22/08/2021 06:24

I love that area. It would be great if OP came back to update us.

BlackAlys · 23/08/2021 05:52

Llandeilo?

CheshireSplat · 03/01/2025 23:35

I have come to report back.

I have found the village. I was wasting time on Facebook and skimmed through some photos of Yorkshire's 15 prettiest villages. And there it was. The tiny cottages, with no roads. The pub. The lack of sea in my description was a bit misleading because there's a huge beach. But the seawall and all various other bits were fairly accurate. Oh, all except the fact it's not in Wales. Not remotely. Runswick Bay just north of Whitby.

So, sorry for the runaround for all of you very helpful people, but this has been bugging me regularly for years and I'm so pleased I've worked it out. I see it's series 5 ep 1 of Villages By The Sea so I'll enjoy that over the weekend.

Diolch yn fawr for everyone who helped with suggestions in Wales.

Apologies again!

Thank you for updating OP. I was getting irritated with all the suggestions that were nowhere near the route you described. So it’s really funny that it turned out to be much further North than those.

Lol, just a bit further north. I'm so unbelievably happy. It's freed up massive area in my brain for me to fill with some other nonsense.
