Here we are again, gaining sequels even more rapidly than the Fast and the Furious...

@HarrietteNightingale What an awful situation. I'm glad you've been able to travel there.

My eyes are very tired this morning. I spent last night crying because DS will be at home with me most of this week and I feel he's being deprived because I can't get enough hours at work. I know I should be grateful he's getting to go at all and I am but I don't care what anyone says about the school provision being the same whether you learn it at home or school as far as I'm concerned it's not. Those children who are still attending physical school are at a distinct advantage this time and I want my son to have that too. I already feel statistically he's disadvantaged in education because he's a summer born boy of a single mother who has no contact with his dad. I feel very despondent today.

CoffeeWithCheese · 18/01/2021 09:30

Morning - I was doing OK till I got a reply from the speech therapist who used to work with DD2. We wanted to get a full language assessment done on her because I'm fairly sure there's something else going on with her language processing - but she's not doing any home work with clients at all at the moment - so we can't even get to the root of any of her problems right now. Yet again, it's DD2 being fucked over by this sodding virus.

TooManyPlatesInMotion · 18/01/2021 09:30

@HarrietteNightingale much love to you and your family.

I thought that re kids at school. Walked past school with kids out at playtime and felt sorry for all the little ones cooped up at home Sad

BogRollBOGOF · 18/01/2021 10:21

I remember last summer, walking in the nearby woods and even sitting in my conservatory listening to other peoples' children playing at school. I normally really like that chorus of sound, but it made me feel really bitter that my children were being deprived of that opportunity.

Homeschool time. DS2's teacher is explaining a piece of work and DS2 is faffing with my running belt. He just doesn't engage with it. If it was Minecraft...
@CruCru you are wicked making me think of lovely walking holidays. I love Austria but star gazing plus mountains sounds a wonderful combination.
Sorry! Last night I googled "children's walking holidays Norway" and got a load of stuff on glacier climbing at some fjords (which my children would think awesome). Am going to campaign for that too be one of our holidays.

bakingcupcakes · 18/01/2021 10:28

We have a lot of faffing (and singing - thank god for mute) too BogRoll but today the Internet is working so far and DS is doing something. I suspect this is because I told him I have to photograph and submit his work to school and they'll be displeased if he hasn't done it.

bakingcupcakes · 18/01/2021 10:31

I really enjoyed Norway. I did it on a boat trip before DS was born. It was a good way to see lots of places as well as the Northern lights and there's certain ones like Tromso I'd like to visit again but for longer.

rosettesforjill · 18/01/2021 10:33

Morning all. Thanks to those struggling today. I am trying to be optimistic about light at the end of the tunnel.

Week three without DS today - he's staying with his grandparents while home learning continues. I am a key worker (and genuinely doing key Covid related work this lockdown) but school have a policy that if the other parent is working from home then your child can't go in. (They changed this with government guidance and were very apologetic about it, to their credit.)

As with so many families, we are almost totally reliant on DH's non-key-worker salary, so if anyone were to have to take the hit with work, it would be me. As it is, we have alternative options (albeit miserable, as we are currently separated from our six year old to the tune of 200+ miles), but if they actually want key workers working, they haven't thought it through very well!

BogRollBOGOF · 18/01/2021 10:53

I love Norway. I went when I was a teenager and we travelled around for 3 weeks camping. Covered the zone between Bergen and Trondheim. We were exceptionally lucky with the weather that year and it was mostly warm and sunny.

I also love Iceland. We went around the whole country for a fortnight with our tent a couple of years before we got married. We plan to go back with the DCs in the next few years now they're getting old enough to appreciate the geography.

Ugh. Monday again! Not that it makes any difference what day it is, they are all tedious.
Flowers for everyone today, it’s probably too early for Wine.

I’ve just been on a conference call. In an hour, the word safe was used 43 times. Not sure why I counted them, must be v bored.

CruCru · 18/01/2021 11:44

I’ve been to Iceland but not Norway. A boat trip sounds awesome, no horrible airports.

Evenstar · 18/01/2021 11:44

Today’s excitement has been an emergency visit to the chiropractor as my back went yesterday, normally I only need a routine adjustment every 4 months. I feel this was a foreseeable consequence of losing my yoga class, opportunities to get out of the house to a variety of places and being unable to get treatment for my foot. The lady who gives me a massage to help with my foot has been unable to work in the latest lockdown, even though she is highly qualified and treats people with cancer etc as well. Massage apparently is treated the same as facials etc even if it is for pain/medical reasons.

So sick of this ☹️

NastyBlouse · 18/01/2021 12:18

Morning all. Flowers Brew and Cake for anyone and everyone what wants any.

I agree about the ramping up of fear and the curtain twitching. DH and I have been 'reported' (albeit to the development management company, not the po-po) for some perceived (and incorrect) masks infraction. We didn't break any laws, or any guidance: we were outside. Nevertheless, here we are, subject to what I believe to be a malicious complaint where we two human beings are referred to as 'a major disease risk'. Hmm

NastyBlouse · 18/01/2021 12:22

I'd love to visit Norway, Iceland and Sweden. And Denmark. And Finland. I have an affinity with northern Europe and Scandinavia, it seems. I think it's the majesty and grandeur of the landscape. And the cinnamon rolls. (Sort of stole that one from Victoria Wood, sorry.)

Taswama · 18/01/2021 13:04

The cinnamon rolls are indeed delicious blouse . Nigella has a recipe in her domestic goddess book that is almost as good.
Cinnamon roll on ferry crossing a fjord = heaven.

On our post pandemic list is go on holiday where we can go swimming outdoors without neoprene. So Tenerife is more likely than Iceland.

Bollss · 18/01/2021 13:11

checking in, 4 pages onto a new thread! thought i'd lost you all!

Pleasedontdothat · 18/01/2021 13:20

Checking in ... my sister called last night to say she’s tested positive for coronavirus - she’s fine, slight fever and a bit of a cough but normally she wouldn’t think twice about it but one of her colleagues (she’s a teacher) tested positive the day before so she felt she had to go. I was with her for a while at a funeral on Wednesday.. I have no symptoms at all and it was a bit over 48 hours before her symptoms started .. so I’m assuming I’m ok (and keeping all fingers and toes tightly crossed...)

Pleasedontdothat · 18/01/2021 13:21

Oh, and now I’m desperate for a cinnamon roll Grin

BogRollBOGOF · 18/01/2021 13:30

There is Blue Lagoon. It was about 11⁰C and drizzling the day we went, and kept having to get out of the water to cool down Grin Maybe not the best value place to go for a swim though !

I've got my butt in action today. DS2 was set up to run C25k. DS1 told to chase him. We headed down to the local mud-pit/ park, and I set up Mr Motivator on my phone on a picnic bench and did a workout while supervising them.
I'm noticing that it is daylight that little bit longer past 4pm which feels a bit more alive.
I'm also accepting that my DCs are barely covering a third of the work set. No way can we do it all. They can do something, but I'm not battling over it all. I told school that they would struggle.

NastyBlouse · 18/01/2021 14:22

I'm very particular about cinnamon rolls. I want them warm, I want them crispy on the outer swirls with a dusting of sugar grains, and I want them doughy and fudgey on the inside.

Whilst we're on Scandinavian baked marvels there's a small chain of Swedish bakeries in Edinburgh who serve the most marvellous parsnip cake. You get a little natural sweetness from the parsnip but they don't add masses of sugar to the mix. They do it with citrus icing I think it's blood orange but I'm not sure -- and it's divine.

maggienolia · 18/01/2021 14:25

Checking in...I really want a cinnamon roll now.
DH is still working from home and I haven't murdered him yet.
I caved last week and got a takeaway coffee. Drank it at the local RSPB site so as well as a granny and two nurses I have also been responsible for the demise of two pigeons, two blackbirds and a blue tit.
DD1 has been cooking broccoli so the house smells of farts.
On the bright side, my vaccination is booked for Wednesday. An hour drive away but that's the deal.
Flowers to everyone struggling.

smallandimperfectlyformed · 18/01/2021 14:41

@rosettesforjill I am so sorry that you have to be separated from your son, that must be so hard. @HarrietteNightingale I am glad that the people at the ticket office were sympathetic, I am so sorry that you are in this position. So sorry to everyone and @Pleasedontdothat I hope your sister only has a mild dose and recovers swiftly.

BogRollBOGOF · 18/01/2021 14:43

I've just had a craving to go to IKEA. It used to be one of our Friday nights out for the meatballs and daim cake. They hadn't ling opened the revamped store and extended cafe either.

@TabbyStar Got another reminder letter about a smear test today. Telling me i really should go for one regardless of my sexual history. (im not sexually active) I find them EXCRUTIATINGLY painful which is why i dont go. So tbh i likely wouldnt be going mask or no mask. But a mask is just another reason not to. I cant breathe my way through the pain in the way i need to.

So its a no from me.
