Here we are again, gaining sequels even more rapidly than the Fast and the Furious...

Tricia Greenhalgh is suggesting on Twitter that runners wear masks! Honestly, how much wrongness is there in that - I have run with a mask on (in running shop on treadmill to get new trainers and to catch a train) and it's horrible, possibly dangerous for those of us with cardiovascular conditions. Also, masked blokes running towards me in the dark, or in the countryside - no thanks. And what about actually being able to see your feet so as not to fall? How much evidence is there even that runners are killing people? People need to be exercising more, not less. Lots of us wouldn't even be out on the roads if they hadn't effing well closed the gym and pools.

Far more significant hazards than spreading Covid.

I don't want masks to become culturally normal, especially outside. It's a point of personal safety to see people's faces and make snap judgements if they're likely to be "safe" or potentially dangerous. We have these instincts for good reason.
(Funnily enough the aquaintance that sexually assaulted me was the guy in the society that I never warmed to nor did any of the other women)

I had a strop recently after opening up Women's Running magazine to find the first article had a gratuitous half page picture featuring masked runners. I tore it out in temper, but was then annoyed that my new magazine moment was ruined. I haven't finished reading it.

I loathe this pernicious creep invading just about every aspect of life.

Saving lives! My PMS has just hit me and everything annoys. I love my family to bits but right now, I want them all to eff off and leave me the eff alone.

BogRollBOGOF · 18/01/2021 19:44

@TheOrchidKiller

Unfortunately, Bogroll you committed the sin of exhanging pleasantries with your friend whilst exercising. No one should be talking 'n' walking, let alone saying, "Bye, same time tomorrow then?"

Poor DD has been very anxious about going out for a walk in case she gets stopped. Honestly, what are we doing to people?

We naturally concluded the conversation before our local constabulary could spare the staff from staking out the nearby country parks, resevoirs and NT sites Wink

Apparently the other day life was quite normal on our local, mud-swamp park. Families are tending to cross paths naturally with staying local, limited daylight and homeschool occupying most of that. A police car pulled up on the neighbouring carpark of a community building and apparently the park cleared in seconds!

Visually there is something fairly slapstick humour about it, but actually it is a worry that people are cautious about being seen to go about normal behaviour in the sight of police. It's a dozy, pleasant area and police cars are a novelty, let alone a source of concern.

This thread in response to Tricia Greenhalgh has made me LOL - twitter.com/skepticalzebra/status/1351238489300414464

That reminds me, sanitary towels are valuable additions to first aid kits as cheap dressings Grin

I had a funny moment on the Tube today - keeping in mind the bar is not high!

Some guy barrelled towards the closing doors to get in, he'd been running up quite a steep flight of stairs.

So he got in and almost did the automatic thing of collapsing into the first seat he saw, which was next to me. Somehow the normality of it made me laugh, even though the train was practically empty! Then he realised what he was about to do and put up hands to apologise (he was still panting from the running).

He then went and sat far away but when he got his breath he said "I'm so sorry! For a second i just forgot" and I said "don't worry - enjoy every second that you can forget!" And we shared a laugh.

Someone once suggested that the old bulky ones were good as stick on shoulder pads!

zigaziga · 18/01/2021 20:00

@smallandimperfectlyformed

I remember in lockdown number one reading on Facebook an absolutely insane post by a woman who said that there was no reason to go out at all, you could open your window for fresh air I do remember the discussions on MN about whether it was even safe or advisable to go in one’s garden. Pretty sure people even started discussing windows open (safe or not?) after that too.

Actually do you remember that police officer who told a man and child off for playing in their own front garden?

ISaySteadyOn · 18/01/2021 20:11

I do! Thought that was awful then and think it is awful now.

NastyBlouse · 18/01/2021 20:19

@MercyBooth

NHS worker on ITV News when they were filming on a ward said its because people arent staying home. FFS Im fed up with this. The blame rhetoric didnt work in the 1980s AIDS epidemic. WTF do people think it will work now. And if you still attach blame to being ill then there will be no change when this is over. People will still go into work when ill with a cold/flu because they will have continued to internalize that ill = blame.
@MercyBooth I totally agree. I have two brothers who are gay and they’ve both been seeing parallels between corona and the vicious 80s HIV blame game for a while.

We’re on a very, very slippery slope with regards to more and more people thoughtlessly — or perhaps knowingly in some malicious cases — drawing false parallels and false equivalence between health and moral character.

THIS! Maybe more ppl will see it when Channel 4 start showing Its a Sin.

SirSamuelVimes · 18/01/2021 21:01

Well, my IKEA trip was a success. One new bookcase, Maccys for dinner (kids were in the back and getting very grumpy) and we managed to escape the wrath of pc plod. Now I just need to build the fucker.

smallandimperfectlyformed · 18/01/2021 21:02

@zigaziga I didn't go onto Mumsnet at all during the first lockdown as I am naturally quite an anxious/neurotic person and was struggling enough with huge guilt as it was (thankfully I no longer have it but it was awful, I genuinely felt responsible for having spread the virus by having done things like gone to Slimming World in a church hall). I didn't hear about the police officer but sadly that doesn't really surprise me! Round my way though we tend to only see police officers when we actually need them and even then often not quick enough!

TheOrchidKiller · 18/01/2021 21:29

Well that's you not leaving your house for at least a week whilst you grapple with an incomprehensible line-drawing of a diagram of a gender-neutral person single-handedly erecting shelves that are clearly a 3-person job, misplace the allen key, have a blazing row with your partner, consider using superglue, & on completion, find 1 left-over screw that does not resemble any of the screws that came in the box.

They want us to Stay At Home? Issue each household with some flatpacked furniture- no one will be going anywhere!

MaxNormal · 18/01/2021 21:30

Speaking of police, be glad you're not in South Africa.

Man arrested for going to buy milk for a newborn after breast feeding failed.

TooManyPlatesInMotion · 18/01/2021 21:35

@MercyBooth I was thinking exactly the same about It's a Sin and the parallels. Blame, blame, blame.

BogRollBOGOF · 18/01/2021 21:42

That was probably wise small. I'm not sure that I've done myself many favours with the embarassing quanity of time I've spent on MN, but then there's been so little else to do.

The first weeks of lockdown #1 were bonkers with no light relief. Anything trivial or lighthearted was yelled down in the face of all-encompassing tragedy, which was why we banded together as by some quirk an AIBU found a cluster who managed to hold a 40 page discussion with wit, empathy and critical observance and seemed to get through a few threads before it really hit anyone else's radar, and we just seemed to manage to keep going along side the insanity.

I remember MN feeling broken for a few weeks after the Brexit referendum result and taking a while for the dust to settle. I often wonder if a lot of more sensible posters just keep a wide berth at times like that. But this has just been so personal and deep.

@BogRollBOGOF I gave myself a bit of a talking to in May I think and avoided all social media as the BLM thing was getting to me too and it felt like there was no respite anywhere from really serious things so I ignored everything and played games on my phone and watched TV that had no adverts! I don't know how or what brought me back to here but this is the first time that I have regularly contributed to a thread. As you say there is not much to do. I could do housework I suppose but ... no excuses, I just hate it! Don't like mess or dirt much but housework is so boring!!

zigaziga · 18/01/2021 22:10

Yes yes yes about people blaming people for getting / passing on CV.
It’s awful that every time someone starts a thread saying that they or their spouse has caught it they always preface it by “I don’t know where we could have caught it, we don’t go anywhere” as if to pre-empt angry comments.
This is a virus, they succeed by spreading. We’ve never thought of ourselves as at fault before for catching a virus.

BogRollBOGOF · 18/01/2021 22:20

I've been sworn to secrecy about a branch of the in-laws catching it a while back. They are all inolved in education in some way, it's hardly that shocking. (Good news they were all fine and the most vulnerable family member evaded it Grin )
It was definitely spoken about in hushed tones!

Oh heck, heavy rain. More mud...

NoisyBrain · 18/01/2021 22:23

Fucking hell I need to stop watching BBC News. Another 'special report' to ram down our throats how terrible it is in hospitals, like anyone with half a brain is not aware of this.

Shoving a microphone in the face of some poor guy whose wife had died half an hour ago to get him to tell us all how tragic it was when he was probably still in shock - talk about distasteful and exploitative.

justasking111 · 18/01/2021 22:42

That BBC news was awful OH switched over to another programme which was also hospitals and people dying. He gave up and went for a shower.

I remember back in the spring when people were angry at their neighbours being too close to the fence, so they had to huddle at the far end of the garden.

The friends I saw yesterday, remember the police arriving? Is a nervous wreck. Her husband had to drag her out of the house to walk the dog. She had been in for three weeks. Food delivered online she is so afraid when her OH goes out to walk the dog. She admits she has lost the plot. She has a phd and ran a whole department before early retirement. It is sad. Her children and grand children are in London which makes her anxiety worse when she sees the figures.

Nah. Other Half is an engineer. I said "I bet you'll need help on this" and then sat down with a drink. His pride has propelled him single-handedly through one Billy and one Gnedby. Grin

smallandimperfectlyformed · 18/01/2021 22:59

Oh that's sad about your friend, justasking111. I can't imagine that people joined the police force intending to terrify people from doing normal activities. I hope that as the numbers go down and we see more good news she recovers from this. @MaxNormal I saw that earlier, that is so disgraceful! Imagine that not being a decent reason to break curfew - I well remember my second daughter having tongue tie and my husband having to buy formula in the middle of the night as we had none in! Looks like they are going to be looking into it over there at least, imagine making a 2 days post partum mother travel in the middle of the night to pick up milk. It beggars belief Sad

MaxNormal · 18/01/2021 23:02

I think she had to walk with a tiny baby and possibly small child? It's really dangerous there at night too as they're in a very urban area.
