Here we are again, gaining sequels even more rapidly than the Fast and the Furious...

Reading these threads has saved my sanity during all this. I just want to thank everyone here for being here, and doing what you’re doing. I’m sure there are many more lurkers (I lurked up until last week!) and we appreciate you all so much. So thank you. 🧡

TooManyPlatesInMotion · 26/01/2021 21:31

@DWPmisery1972 I am so sorry your GP was not more helpful and that you're going through this Flowers. I probably don't have anything useful to say that you haven't considered already, but what about contacting an organisation like BEAT to see if they could assist?

You have nothing to apologise for or feel ashamed about. Nothing.

ISaySteadyOn · 26/01/2021 21:36

Flowers I am glad you delurked. Welcome to the thread.

I went for a run today. The first one since I had shin splints. I have proper shoes and I warmed up and stretched before. I was nervous but it was good. I had to start from the beginning again but I did it.

DWPmisery1972 · 26/01/2021 21:36

TooMany I’ve spoken to beat tonight just to have a cry and a talk- I don’t think I’m ready to seek help for a little while after that dressing down from the GP. They were extremely kind and let me talk, thank you for mentioning them. Would highly recommend for anyone struggling- they can direct to help in local areas which is helpful. Thank you for your support 🧡

DWPmisery1972 · 26/01/2021 21:38

Well done on your run steady what’s the weather like where you are? I took the kids out yesterday and it was just me picking them up off the ground after they’d slipped over about 100 times Grin

MercyBooth · 26/01/2021 21:46

@DWPmisery1972 Im sorry you are going through all that. Flowers

ISaySteadyOn · 26/01/2021 22:04

Was cold but clear. Rain began just as I finished.

And in more dull good news, I managed to cook a really good vegetable korma for supper.

Reedwarbler · 26/01/2021 22:06

'ONS data shows massive plummets in the usual categories of death' @BOGROLLBOGOFF Do you think this is probably because the usual categories of death are being solely (or very largely) attributed to covid instead? I think I read on this thread some time ago how there were much fewer deaths from, say for example, heart problems since covid came on the scene. Heart deaths are pretty constant year on year, so the only conclusion you can draw is that heart problem deaths are being attributed to some thing else, i.e. covid. I think this will eventually all come out in the wash and we will find that many death are being misattributed, and we are being misled. Add this to the faulty pcr tests that give false positives and it all just looks peculiar to me. I am not into conspiracies but I really don't understand the government's attitude, which seems to be getting more and more panicky even as things are starting to slowly get better.

There must be a lot of overlap between conventional causes of death and Covid influenced or accelerated deaths. Especially with its tendency to affect the elderly and those in poorer health. Say with cardiac disease, I'd have thought that there would be a difference recording someone having cardiac problems because of Covid and contracting Covid in hospital because you were already there with cardiac issues.

I'm no statastican at all (not helped by a cracked phone screen that I never sorted out from first lockdown...) but it's clearly not as simple as showing a similar pattern of death trends to usual plus Covid causing an excess on top.

How many "with Covids" were incidental to the inevitable?

rosettesforjill · 26/01/2021 23:04

DH was showing me some figures earlier - I think on BBC website - showing that deaths per 100,000 adjusted for age are similar to what they were 10 years ago. Obviously it would be better if they had continued on a downward trend as they have been doing, but we aren't being wiped out by any stretch. 2011 is still only yesterday in my mind!

justasking111 · 26/01/2021 23:11

OH has a friend who was a statistician in a previous life. He is interested in figures concentrating on Wales because it is simpler. His theory for the staggering fall in cases in areas of Wales that were hardest is something called "Saturation point". The virus is struggling for hosts now. Merthyr has gone from 10k in 100k to 12 in a 100k in a month. The caveat being that this is under current restrictions.

So as many have said before on here the virus will behave as viruses do.

Thank you for your support everybody Flowers

Vegetable korma sounds amazing! Yummy Star

DWPmisery1972 · 27/01/2021 00:18

Can I ask a (non goady) question - as you guys seem clued up. Sorry if it’s been mentioned before

But what I was wondering was

  1. did we have ‘excess deaths’ in 2020 (ie more than we would expect for a usual year)

And

  1. if we haven’t, why are the government panicking so much still after having a years stats under their belt?

Thank you in advance everyone :)

Not totally up on figures but as I understand it there are 'excess deaths' but not many more than in a bad flu year and the 'excess' deaths are many many thousands fewer than the number of deaths being ascribed to Covid.
DWPmisery1972 · 27/01/2021 01:01

Thanks Nanny- it’s the part I can’t get my head around; it’s like mass panic around something that doesn’t seem to be affecting yearly stats in a drastic way. It might be a slightly basic way of looking at it (obviously I’m no scientist or statistician) but it’s got me thinking.

starfish88 · 27/01/2021 02:08

@DWPmisery1972 I'm sending my thoughts too. I considered myself recovered from anorexia until all this. Now it's a daily struggle. If you can manage it and it's possible, can you see a different GP? Some are, unfortunately, complete prats, speaking from my own experience of being turned away by some doctors. I'll always remember one, who reassured my parents that good students don't get anorexia, it's just for cheerleaders! When you have the strength again, maybe request someone else. You would also be totally in your rights to speak to PALS about that treatment too. But you deserve support and you deserve to get better.

DWPmisery1972 · 27/01/2021 02:44

Thanks starfish I’m going to muster the strength to call for an appointment again and ask for a referral to the local eating disorder organisation- as I need a GP referral to get in there so to speak.

I’m sorry you went through it too, I’m told because I’m not underweight yet (I’m a few pounds off being underweight by BMI standards) but I’ve lost two teeth to this and I can’t cope with it all much longer. People like us don’t get anorexia Hmm it’s all in our heads 🙄

"I'm not putting my hands in my pocket to the union that I would not pay subs to, to bail them out on a PR stunt for a problem that they have aggravated!"

I'm afraid it rather strikes me as analogous to burgling your house, taking all your electronic goods and then turning up the next day and offering to lend you a kettle. Also, the Daily Mail are well ahead of them - they've been running a campaign to raise funds for laptops for pulls for ages - possibly since the start of this round of school closures?

LivinLaVidaLoki · 27/01/2021 06:32

"You can help a child to learn today by donating the National Education Union’s campaign to assist poor children with remote learning"

Or you could stop being such arseholes about having kids in school and give them an actual education.

Dress it up however you like, the school closures were a political decision driven by unions. All they did was bang on about how its not safe for teachers and they're dying in their millions. Now that's shown to not be the case it's all about community transmission.
Bollocks. And this is quite clearly a PR stunt as if they gave a rats ass they'd have done this when they forced the close.

The thing about closing schools, is the fear around them is ramped up so hard that once closed it is so hard to open them.

wanderings · 27/01/2021 07:14

Sorry if this sounds goady (it's not meant to be) even on this thread, here are my observations on that "100,000" that is all over this morning's headlines, complete with Saint Boris hanging his head:

  • It's a useful distraction from getting the country back on its feet, I've no doubt it's going to be mentioned whenever anyone asks about easing lockdown. It's going to become the new "people will die" slogan.
  • This message might be followed with "NOW do you see the point of lockdown?" or "this is why we can't reopen yet". It might not be the government that says this, but I bet a few papers will. Conveniently twisting the truth.
  • Not a word about the far fewer deaths from other things, or that some of those 100,000 are those who recovered from Covid, but died of something else. Once a Covid, always a Covid.

I would caption the Boris hanging head picture with "No, I won't look you in the eyes".

And yes, the teaching union having the audacity to ask for donations: pure hypocrisy.

mightbealittlebitmad · 27/01/2021 07:27

I feel like the way things are going people will say it's not safe to open schools until every single person has had their vaccine so that could be the back end of this year.

We managed to get schools open to some degree last June so if cases continue to fall and vulnerable people are vaccinated why can't they at least to part time in March?

bakingcupcakes · 27/01/2021 07:32

@DWPmisery1972 and @starfish88 I completely understand where you're coming from. I also considered myself completely recovered and this mess has brought it all back out again. As a parent I feel like I should be setting a better example and for some reason I can't. I also can't tell anyone because then I'll look like a failure and I also don't want anyone to try forcing me to stop It's like I need something to focus on. This is why I so desperately want to go to work and for DS to go to school. I've taken to pacing the house when DS is in bed rather than sitting watching something. The higher the steps the more satisfied I feel. I was pacing when he was up but he's noticed so I do it less. I'm not quite sure how I'm meant to get back what I had before. It's depressing.

With schools I also thought once they shut it'd take a long time to get them open again. My friend is a teacher and he said the same thing. He disagrees with the unions stance completely.

DWPmisery1972 · 27/01/2021 07:41

Solidarity bakingcupcakes being trapped and having no control has made me feel like I’m back in ‘that place’.

In good news, I just threw out the last of my bastard ex husband’s crap as it’s bin day today and I feel GREAT! My kitchen looks lovely and tidy without a box of his years old crap that he hoarded around. Hallelujah! I haven’t slept yet so I’m probably buzzing on adrenaline but having a lovely clean house is doing me the world of good mentally. And I managed to keep a piece of toast down. Hugs to everyone this morning (fuck social distancing Wink) and happy Wednesday Smile
