Here we are again, gaining sequels even more rapidly than the Fast and the Furious...

Not watching it but the BBC are reporting that Boris says the new variant may be associated with a higher degree of mortality.

Surely it either is or isn't. Maybe is meaningless and quite frankly I just think again put across to try and scare people.

DrRamsesEmerson · 22/01/2021 17:15

Based in something Neil Ferguson says which doesn't seem to be based on hard evidence - given that Ferguson is the D-in-chief, I'm inclined to take it with a shovel of salt.

wanderings · 22/01/2021 17:21

Have you seen the thread over there with the raging about the 400-strong wedding, which was busted?

I'm not sure how to feel about it. Yes, people are dying, they're all covidiots and selfish arseholes who are committing mass murder, blah blah blah. But I am secretly glad (or not so secretly, as I'm writing it on here) that there is a resistance against Saint Boris's dictatorship, so not everybody has been brainwashed.

ISaySteadyOn · 22/01/2021 17:33

I keep falling back on silly quotes. Today's is one of Lister fromRed Dwarf 'You're born and then you die but the bit in the middle is called LIFE!'

So afaic, good on those people for defying unlife and actually living.

@Mrsfrumble, so glad for your DS. I bet it will do him a world of good.

Seriouslymole · 22/01/2021 17:35

@dingit - OH.MY.WORD - got back from being out for 10 minutes with DD to DS greeting me at the door. The bloody bitch of a dog has EATEN the fucking volcano!!!

We have rebuilt but goodness alone knows whether the dog will survive the night. I nearly did her in myself.

Hopefully she will be fine but fear there will be lots of 💩 Grin

They really want to keep us locked up don't they...

So the dog really did eat his homework?Wink

I was worried it was one of those ones with bicarb and vinegar in until I went back and reread.

How frustrating though after all that. I'm sorry.

110APiccadilly · 22/01/2021 17:57

@Seriouslymole is your dog a Labrador by any chance?

Taswama · 22/01/2021 18:07

I do wonder at teachers who think setting a craft project (volcano) right now is any way helpful. How many kids, even at Y7, can realistically do that without parent input? At a time when parents are likely to have less time than ever due to homeschooling multiple kids and actually doing their own jobs too in most cases.

Primary are having themed craft / art ideas in the newsletter but it's totally optional and as my dc don't read the newsletter they don't even know about it.

Terrible news from Japan. Its a very patriarchal society I believe, which probably makes things worse.

Littlebelina · 22/01/2021 18:18

I see Neil Ferguson has run that algorithm where it shows his name has been in the papers 30% last than week so time to leak some stuff to the press which is easy to take out of context so if it's later proven not to be the case he claim it was only a hypothesis.....

BogRollBOGOF · 22/01/2021 18:29

We're being careful with resourcing for Brownies and not assuming what materials they have in... and they are more likely to have craft stuff than average.

As for the more "deadly variant", I wonder how much is connected to reduced public health since March; access to timely healthcare, being sedentary, loss of independence, comfort eating, drinking, poor access to accessible fitness such as swimming.

ISaySteadyOn · 22/01/2021 18:40

Indeed. Maybe health would improve if we were allowed to live

No - you’d think, wouldn’t you? She’s a bloody retired racing greyhound!

Taswama · 22/01/2021 18:47

Great news @Mrsfrumble .

Both my dc are autistic and I find myself saying 'fortunately they have special needs so can go to school' rather a lot recently. I mean, I don't consider them fortunate to have SN but right now its a blessing.

Hasn't worked in this household!

Credit to DS1, he is sitting in front of the daily video call, although it helps that it's maths.
DS2 is more awkward. I grassed him up on not even attempting to do his spelling test. When he runs away, I put the camera on hoping the teacher will notice the vacant chair, but the sod turns it off when he is there so she can't see him faffing about.

Both have been in tears at some point over tonight's Zoom Karate. I've stood my ground this time, with it being winter and not doing much else that's active and there's been so much disruption to everything. DS1 was on the cusp of grading a year ago and is still there, so missing however long it is is not going to help. He's pissed off because DS2 has caught up to the same belt. I let scouting slide as they took along time to get sorted, plus the interaction is harder. Karate is simpler and not relying on interactive communication.

Funnily my homework eating dog (she's eaten a couple of bits of mine - has a taste for paper apparently) is a greyhound as well.

Sorry Seriouslymole but I've had a monumentally shit day, and that has cheered things up! I sincerely hope your dog's ok though, & there isn't a secondary erruption...

We must've skipped the volcano modelling, although they both came home excited about mentoes in cola. We made an Egyptian mummy's tomb (DD insisted on mummifying some plasticene for added authenticity), & a WW2 air raid shelter.

Seriouslymole · 22/01/2021 20:11

@TheOrchidKiller - well I'm glad it's achieved something - even if it was just to make you laugh!

We have rebuilt the volcano - it is now on top of a wardrobe. The dog has done a perfectly normal poo so we await tomorrow's offering and pray for no blockage.

I'm not watching or looking at the news today. I can do without it after the day I've had.

Seriouslymole · 22/01/2021 20:22

In fairness, the geography teacher seems wonderful. He did say build a model, if you can, out of anything and if not you can do a diagram. It was DS who decided on the papier mache. One of the more sensible members of the class for example, built it out of lego.
Mrsfrumble · 22/01/2021 20:38

DD is a bugger for this too, always switching off her camera or sliding off her chair under the table, especially if there’s spelling involved. None of the other kids on the call seem to do it! Fortunately her teacher is cutting her some slack because of having just lost her grandpa, and apparently her she’s “a very enthusiastic learner” (teacher’s words) at school. I admit she has been a bit neglected recently because DS creates so much drama, so hopefully with him in school I can give her my full attention.

I too am really frustrated by refusal to acknowledge that the current situation is driving more people into poor health which in turn is making us more vulnerable. Do people honestly believe that doing Joe Wicks in our living rooms is enough to preserve the physical and mental health of the whole nation?

justasking111 · 22/01/2021 21:05

Sturgeon said today to do your shopping once a week if you did not have online delivery. So are supermarkets safe or not!!!

AcornAutumn · 22/01/2021 22:09

I can't carry a week of shopping for just me. Idiotic Sturgeon.

Overheard a funny conversation in Aldi. Think it was two brothers shopping.

They were arguing about disinfecting shopping and suddenly one stopped bang in the middle of the aisle and said, very loudly

"I REFUSE to live in fear. I can't avoid living in lockdown rules. But l will not let them get into my head, all right? I REFUSE. We have to live life as normally as we can."

I was about to say "good for you" but then his brother went all whiny and said "Dude, I can't believe we're related. Are you really not going to help me clean the shopping when we get home?"

Other brother said "no" and strode off with the trolley looking very...AD like. 😂

MrsEWeatherwax · 22/01/2021 22:16

I love going shopping, it’s a little bit of pleasure and it gets me out of the house. Supermarket and work, that’s it. What a boring life.

ISaySteadyOn · 22/01/2021 22:20

We watched The Empire Strikes Back tonight. I had forgotten how much I love those films.
