Do you have certain foods that don’t agree with you?

I get eczema and itchy blotchy skin and I’m sure it flares up after dairy, especially something like fresh cream.

I get indigestion from some foods like peppers.

I have also started getting an upset stomach every couple of months and I can’t work out a trigger for that but it is possibly too much bread/wheat/cereal.

I would love to do an elimination diet but I find it too hard to do for more than a day or so.

Are there certain foods you can’t eat and give you a reaction? How can you be sure?

I can’t eat coconut or tea with milk they both give me abscesses. I did the elimination diet took me three years to figure it out - no more abscesses - unless I decide to doubt/challenge my sensitivities - coconut I’ll react within 24hours. Milk with tea about a week of having a cup every day - I miss it and I want it to be ok. Weird thing - black tea is fine, dairy is fine - tea with milk is not. No medical test would back up my findings but being abscess free is all I need. Red fruits are also not great.

Dairy gives me spots and acne.
Nuts gives me spots
Cauliflower gives me really bad indigestion.

Pasta makes me really bloated and farty but I’m ignoring it because I love it...

Oatibix.

Genuinely atrocious wind. Pure evil.

LadyJaye · 16/01/2021 23:21

Fucking everything now, it would appear, with the weird exception of fish.

I've been vegetarian for years, as meat was the initial trigger (I think I may have underlyinggall bladder issues which are made worse by fat in my diet), but now it seems that dairy, wheat, caffeine, alcohol and grains/legumes are also triggers.

Started eating fish again recently and that seems okay, thus far.

The way things are going, I'm going to end up on a diet of haddock and water. Getting older sucks.

Scottishskifun · 16/01/2021 23:21

Gluten I get a bad reaction - massive bloating, vomiting and pain
Bananas give me migraines - I can't have high potassium foods they trigger migraines but bananas is by far the worse for it

SilverOtter · 16/01/2021 23:22

Just recently bread has been really upsetting my guts. When I eat it at lunchtime I gradually get abdominal pain, wind and bloating throughout the afternoon, and I can guarantee that by about 9.30pm I'll be having horrible diarrhoeaSad

BlackeyedSusan · 16/01/2021 23:24

I love onions, and brussel sprouts... the ozone layer is not so pleased...

Kote · 16/01/2021 23:25

Bananas and raw celery both make me throw up. If I eat them cooked as part of another dish (e.g. banana bread, stew) I don't have any problems.

Petal7 · 16/01/2021 23:27

Green peppers= indigestion

grassisjeweled · 17/01/2021 01:06

Not been mentioned on here but raw parsnips make my tongue itch and mouth sting.

Canteloupe melon gives me the runs

Maybe because no one eats raw parsnips to find out? Grin

I have IBS, had it for nearly 30 years and the triggers would change. I have to eat low carb due to Diabetes and that has more or less eliminated the IBS. One trigger that always remained the same is bananas. Not tried one for years now but last time I had a bite of one I didn’t go to the loo for three weeks and had horrendous stomach pain. Not bothered again, and obviously can’t now anyway!!

Sweeteners bring me out in a rash.

PaperMonster · 17/01/2021 09:12

Oh, and if I eat prawns every day for about a week, my throat swells up. This has happened a few times.

I seem to be developing more of an issue with soya products as I get older. We had vegan burgers a couple of nights ago, which tasted fantastic, but boy did I suffer the next day. My stomach was churning and gurgling all day and the wind was horrendous. I'm not a vegetarian, but I only eat meat once in a blue moon and am just not much of a beef burger or sausage eater, so tend to eat the vegetarian/vegan versions on the odd occasions I fancy something like that. I think I'll steer clear of soya after that last experience. I'm ok with Quorn.

I get a similar reaction to dried fruit and oily food. But the only thing that affects my skin, rather than my gut, is lemons/oranges and only if I eat them over a few days. I started taking a slice of lemon in black tea a few years back and broke out in an itchy rash on my face after a few days. The same thing happened when I ate a mandarin orange every day. After about four or five days, I got a rash. I'm ok with the occasional orange or slice of lemon though.

Sturmundcalm · 19/01/2021 13:18

i forgot about soya...

and I need to be careful with nuts, not allergic but if I eat too many whole nuts, especially with skin on then my stomach does not appreciate it! tend to mainly do nut butters instead.

Dairy and gluten both are main intolerances
I’d also add fructose glucose syrup and. Hydrogenated fat

Easy test, get another person..hold arm at below shoulder height
Out from body
Get other person to say hold my pressure and press down
Then put carton of milk on your abdomen
Repeat arm
If you can’t meet pressure it’s highly likely You’re intolerant
Try with anything gluten.
Cheese etc
It’s called muscle testing

Try the muscle test

I tried it with a friend
He held very strong Lhasa hardly got the milk anywhere near him, touched his arm and it just fell away

Dowser · 19/01/2021 14:08

Had hardly

Dowser · 19/01/2021 14:09

@TattyBo

Oats! They give me an awful hangover type headache every time without fail. It’s strange as cannot find any online info about oat intolerance.

My DD comes up in hives if she eats carrots.

Gluten in oats Or.Maybe something in preparation Try muscle test

@Anonanon12

This is interesting, my partner keeps suffering with constipation every 10 to 14 days and we thought it might be wheat or gluten but blood tests and a colonscopy showed nothing, he took it out his diet and tried nothing new apart from roast potatoes in olive oil and normal bisto gravy and it all kicked off again. Always presumed it would be a group food like wheat or gluten but by going by others issues maybe its random foods we wouldn't think of
If you look at blood group diets Potato is a no for Os
Dowser · 19/01/2021 14:12

@Anonanon12

Yes sorry we realise its in the Bisto but because he has eaten gluten all his life with no problem, it's odd to suddenly have such an extreme reaction but this thread shows people suddenly developing issues later on in life so maybe this is the same with him, and by eliminating it for a few weeks, it was then worse when he had it
It often shows up in later life as we become inefficient at making enzymes as we age
Dowser · 19/01/2021 14:12

@MinnieJackson

I love gherkins but very rarely have them now as I get really bad acid reflux at night. Gruyere cheese makes my mouth itch weirdly, and bananas. Peeling potatoes makes my hands come out in a rash.
Potatoes are part of the deadly nightshade family
CorianderBee · 19/01/2021 14:13

Nothing really sets off my eczema food wise but excessive cheese or legumes do tend to make me erm... feel rather bloated (and other things)

garlictwist · 19/01/2021 14:13

If I eat more than a few crisps I get terrible stomach cramps. Especially Pringles. The first time this happened when I was about 16 I ended up going to A&E because I thought I had appendicitis.
