Do you have certain foods that don’t agree with you?

I get eczema and itchy blotchy skin and I’m sure it flares up after dairy, especially something like fresh cream.

I get indigestion from some foods like peppers.

I have also started getting an upset stomach every couple of months and I can’t work out a trigger for that but it is possibly too much bread/wheat/cereal.

I would love to do an elimination diet but I find it too hard to do for more than a day or so.

Are there certain foods you can’t eat and give you a reaction? How can you be sure?

@Breathmiller

I have so many. It's sometimes a pain but I've got used to it over the years.

I am gluten free and vegan and also have a few odd ones.
Oranges or orange juice cause my eyes to itch and swell. Edamame beans as a bean causes the most painful stomach spasms but I can take soya products. And a certain kind of passata once put me in hospital with an anaphylaxis type reaction.

I have IBS and eczema that flares up with gluten or dairy. I used to miss certain things but I've been gf for 15 years now and just used to it. It's not worth the pain it causes.

I have also found that some I have grown out of and changed.

When i was a kid (in the 70s) the diluting (orange) juice used to make me wheezy. Goodness knows what was in it. But i used to get itchy under my ' armpit ' i would tell my mum.

Then in my 20s I took a strong reaction to certain red wines. I would come out in itchy hives all over and my eyes and mouth would swell up. I was on strong antihistamines for years. I outgrew that.

Then I had years of cheese and chocolate giving me migraines in my 30s. That went as well.

I don't really notice anymore until I go somewhere to eat and then realise how restrictive it might seem to other people.

I feel it's under control and I know what to avoid. Some people's reactions can be odd. My dad and his wife really struggle with it and i know they think I'm being precious. But they have never seen my in hospital with my face and tongue swollen looking like the Elephant man struggling to breathe. It can come on so quickly I don't even need to phone first, I am supposed to go straight to A&E if it starts.

Wow
I see a medical Dowser
He reckons once you have the intolerance you can never go back to it
He’s been 30 years gf and df
I’ve been 18 months
It doesn’t just affect gut
It can also play havoc with sinuses, joints, hearing etc

@LadyJaye

Fucking everything now, it would appear, with the weird exception of fish.

I've been vegetarian for years, as meat was the initial trigger (I think I may have underlyinggall bladder issues which are made worse by fat in my diet), but now it seems that dairy, wheat, caffeine, alcohol and grains/legumes are also triggers.

Started eating fish again recently and that seems okay, thus far.

The way things are going, I'm going to end up on a diet of haddock and water. Getting older sucks.

Oh dear
That’s no fun is it
Maybe a naturopath could help

Cheese makes me puke until I have nothing left, always has. As a child I was told I was allergic to it although I know realise that isn't quite correct.

If I eat or drink too much sugar it gives me a kind of thrush in my mouth, it's disgusting.

DS2 can't eat too much kiwi, berries or anything like prunes as they make his poo really acidic and explosive. I know that's normal but I'm talking half a kiwi fruit or two prunes is his limit!

Cucumber makes me burp for hours

And my god Jerusalem artichokes give me wind that would be dangerous in an enclosed space never again!

Apart from that I can eat anything else

I react to a lot of fruit like apples, pears, kiwi and peach. My mum and Grandma are the same. We all get an itchy throat and feels like it's closing in. I can eat bananas and strawberries just fine though!

I also have foods that trigger migraines such as eggs, some soups and salad dressings.

Kidney beans, my stomach swells up like I'm pregnant, have terrible pain and then unfortunate after effects! Any other bean, in fact any other food, no issue, just the beans of evil...

All fruit. My body reacts like I've eaten poison.

Fine with veggies.

Bananas make my throat itch. I can only have them blended in a milkshake and even then only a small amount.

Ds has never been able to eat ice cream - the immediate effect is Vesuvius-like! I had to send him with strict instructions when he was little NOT to eat any at parties! At 23 he still can’t eat it - he is sprinting for the loo five minutes later.

Various things set off my stomach… but I can never pin it down. One day I’ll be felled by pastry, another day not. It seems my intestines are determined to trick me Sad
