The reason they are saying it is because of people taking the piss and that it what they want to deter.

There was similar on the Tube. Scores of people were just turned away. About 1000 were issued fixed penalty notices, 104 ended up in court, and just one of them produced medical evidence (and had penalty quashed)

We are a kind and caring nation

The nation that consistently voted for disability benefit cuts. Food banks and austerity. Yeah Course we are.

Don’t be daft.

Just don’t.

you won't get an answer to this one, everyone thinks differently

AwaAnBileYerHeid · 11/01/2021 20:02

Great news. I'll be shopping here from now on. I know you'll get people lying saying that they're medically exempt but the rabid anti maskers can't wait to tell you that the pandemic is a scam so they'll out themselves re medical exemptions.

RetailGail · 11/01/2021 20:03

@sofiaaaaaa

I think the mask exemption list is currently too wide to be effective. It’s interesting that other countries manage to maintain high mask compliance, but here it’s almost like every other Brit has crippling anxiety that renders them impossible to wear.
quite. we were already a laughing stock to the rest of the world before this saga!
LudaMusser187 · 11/01/2021 20:05

I saw a woman in Tesco at the wkend who was wearing a visor that was designed to cover only her mouth and nose, I've never seen one before.

It wasn't covering her nose very well either if at all

Hancock bought a load of masks that were useless for the NHS because they have ear loops not tie backs. Why havent they been distributed to poorer families. Its not impossible in the 2020s surely. Just use DWP records.

Lucindainthesky · 11/01/2021 20:08

Last time we stepped foot in a shop was last March (shielding). It's really not that difficult to get slots, at least not for click and collect.

We HAVE to do it. Why can't those who are mask exempt manage it?

User158340 · 11/01/2021 20:10

Every cantankerous Covid denier or anarchist who refuse to wear them will just say 'i'm exempt' and nobody can challenge them. This is why it's been abused from the start.

Masks are available so cheaply that cost cannot seriously be an issue - £1 each in places like B and M and wash and rewear them.
itsgettingweird · 11/01/2021 20:17

@Sobeyondthehills

I was on a post a few weeks ago regarding this, the OP had something I had never heard of, but meant that although not vulnerable couldn't wear a mask.

Her worry was that other companies would start bringing this in, including transport, so she would be unable to get to work, doctors appointments etc.

It is starting to look like its happening

No exception does still exist.

They may well start asking for proof. I doubt they will.

But it definitely decreases the number of people trying it on.

Our co op type shop had limits. X number of people with masks and half that amount when 1 unmasked person. It was still done via the machine queue thing.

But done so cleverly you no longer could have groups of 6+ school children or the builders from the site over the road in groups (who would remove their dust masks to walk to shop!).

It was amazing how once they found themselves queuing outside in the winter they started to bring masks! It's not a large shop so plenty of room to have normal limits of numbers.

So because you can do everyone must be able to. What about those who don't have a car?

Click and collect slots are not easy to get where I live at all.

Hamsterfan · 11/01/2021 20:20

I wish it was law and that if you truly could not wear a mask eg previous assault you could have a guaranteed online slot or a shopping proxy. My SIL tells me she is exempt because of her anxiety - this does not stop her wearing a face covering when snowboarding or snorkelling however 🙄 or wearing masks as part of her favourite fancy dress outs. Really makes me seethe! When I go to work and wear a much more close fitting mask for a 12 hour shift in the hospital.

MercyBooth · 11/01/2021 20:21

@lockeddownandcrazy You have missed the point. a. not everyone can wear reusable ones. I wear disposable.
b. its better that those masks Hancock got are used rather than left to rot away in a warehouse.

chocolatemonster · 11/01/2021 20:22

My dd 17 works in a supermarket.

One customer today - no mask, no idea if medically exempt or not. Coughed more than once in dd's direction at till despite being asked not to.

Other customer wearing mask but pulling it down to speak. When dd said she could hear her perfectly well with the mask on she said she wasn't being told what to do by someone younger then her.

Quite frankly I want supermarkets to be stricter if the public cannot be sensible.

Ugzbugz · 11/01/2021 20:23

Loads of poeple in my local morrisons dont wear masks, no lanyard even though you can just buy them like a friend did as she doesnt believe in masks.

Viviennemary · 11/01/2021 20:25

I agree. Good decision.

Click and collect slots are not easily available where I am. You can’t just assume everyone can get these.
DeeCeeCherry · 11/01/2021 20:27

There's a huge "Save Our Rights" group on FB full of people who will not wear face coverings, and taking pride in being confrontational about it in supermarkets. They post up pics of their "successes" - which are, upsetting staff. If they make a staff member cry, epic virtual backslapping ensues

nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut · 11/01/2021 20:28

I'm sick of people keep saying well if they were a nurse/worked in a hospital they would have to wear one. I COULD NEVER TAKE A JOB IN A HOSPITAL AND THIS IS WHY!

PaddingtonsSister · 11/01/2021 20:29

I am actually really happy to read this thread I thought i was in the minority on mn because I think that mandatory should mean just that so its great to see many others feel the same

ToadsThePeanutButterSnob · 11/01/2021 20:29

I'm sick of having to put myself at risk because of someone who bought a bloody lanyard online (my job requires less than 2m and often touching the face).

Perhaps you should stay at home then and have your shopping delivered.

NiceGerbil · 11/01/2021 20:29

I have read quite a lot about rape / CSA victims who get a trauma response to their faces being covered like this.

I don't they they should have to stay indoors until ??? and I don't think they should have to explain it to all and sundry.

Do we care about people who are vulnerable for whatever reason, or not?

Or is it just some reasons that are ok and if they don't fit the criteria (sorry you should be over that by now/ not my problem) they should be put away from society.
