@Orf1abc so you'd risk an 80% mortality rate if necessary? Or would you just not go?

onlyreadingneverposting8 · 11/01/2021 19:40

My point being that people who are exempt are to an extent making a judgement call based on their own personal risk, which if it were higher they would make a different choice.

itsgettingweird · 11/01/2021 19:40

@AlternativePerspective

Exemptions need to be scrapped other than with confirmed medical need.

Exemptions need to be treated the same as the blue badg scheme and you should be required by law) to provide official proof of exemption. Failure to do so should result in a fine.

And no, it’s not ok to just say “I’m exempt” and be immmune from questioning. Far too many people are taking the piss that the laws around wearing masks have become pointless.

Agree and so does my disabled ds.

He has a blue badge and he said why couldn't you get a card from GP that confirms you are excempt. It didn't need to state the reason but I do believe you need an official NHs document.

Akire · 11/01/2021 19:40

Adults and children of all ages have to shield or self isolate. That involves not going to shops or leaving their homes at all. Really difficult to see how that’s so impossible for others. I’m not saying it’s pleasant but we are living in an air borne pandemic so it has to be done.

safariboot · 11/01/2021 19:41

They’ll just say “I’m exempt” and walk right in won’t they?

I don't know. I think a decent percentage of anti-maskers will be stupid and arrogant enough to not claim a medical exemption when they refuse to put their mask on. They'll rant about how it's their "freedom" and "right" to go bare-faced, or about how covid is all a "conspiracy".

Those people will now be thrown out by Morrisons.

Meredithgrey1 · 11/01/2021 19:42

In an ideal world you’d have something like this, but it’s just not practically possible at the moment for lots of people to take up that GP/NHS time.

Chicchicchicchiclana · 11/01/2021 19:44

I'm not sure about the many exemptions. I went to collect a parcel from my local M&S food store on 23 or 24 December (a gift I'd ordered online) I was served by two members of staff, both a lot younger than me without masks but wearing the sunflower lanyard. Why would M&S allow them to be face to face with customers and walking around in a very small store if they were exempt from wearing a mask? It just seems wrong.

Bohemiagirl · 11/01/2021 19:44

I was in Aldi last week and at least half the people in there (it wasn't busy) were either wearing masks around their chins or below their nose. I guess they wore them properly to come in the door.
It's so disrespectful to shop staff to do this. I feel for people who genuinely can't wear masks, but I don't know what the answer is.

Grenlei · 11/01/2021 19:45

Many people who genuinely can't wear either a mask or a visor will either have autism, suffer from PTSD as a result of previous trauma/ assault, or have other conditions like trigeminal neuralgia.

Not conditions that make them especially vulnerable to Covid, but do make them unable to mask wear.

Let's remember also that a lot of people unable to wear masks also will have jobs which mean they cant just sit at home waiting for the mask restrictions to end! Being unable to wear a mask doesn't also necessarily mean you're unfit to work.

Agree practicalities this late and this far into pandemic probably make it not worth the issue.

But it should have been thought up end of first lockdown. I'm all for a libertarian nation but when it becomes that we allow people to have no accountability and put someone else's life at risk I actually think we are failing as a libertarian nation. Because with freedom come responsibility.

Probably because if they (M&S) dared to question it then some people would all rise up in outrage and say they (the two girls) should not be challenged as they might have been victims of some violent/abusive scenario which might make them mask phobic and that they should not have to disclose.

Strangely though, if those same two girls worked in a job that required masks on a daily basis they would just have to get on with it and wear them, or choose a different job.

Sobeyondthehills · 11/01/2021 19:49

I was on a post a few weeks ago regarding this, the OP had something I had never heard of, but meant that although not vulnerable couldn't wear a mask.

Her worry was that other companies would start bringing this in, including transport, so she would be unable to get to work, doctors appointments etc.

It is starting to look like its happening

alexdgr8 · 11/01/2021 19:50

get other people to help do your shopping if you can't wear a mask.
there are volunteer groups.
it;s a question of attitude.
one person on another thread seemed almost proud that they had no friends neighbours anyone who could get shopping for them. i wonder why. and said volunteers wouldn't do it for them. but they hadn't tried. because they didn't want to.
people want rights. flock anyone else. no sense of duty.
how have we become like this. what is wrong with people.

bobbojobbo · 11/01/2021 19:52

Its funny that other countries manage to have a mandatory law for masks and people just do it.
The vast majority of people who claim not to be able to wear a mask simply don't want to or don't like it. And that's not fair to everyone else, especially the people who have to work around them.

Glenorma · 11/01/2021 19:52

That’s a laugh. Some of their own staff aren’t even wearing masks!

MzHz · 11/01/2021 19:52

My Morrison’s has click and collect slots available pretty much whenever

The only place I’ve ever been asked about a mask was at Morrison’s and it made me feel better being asked because there are far too many people who are exempt

You don’t see this level of exemption in other countries, people in Spain, and Portugal for example just wear them, no drama.

Those who are medically exempt should have the space to shop safely etc, but sadly this is undermined by those clever dicks who won’t just do the shit we all have to do to get this fucking virus back under control.

Grenlei · 11/01/2021 19:53

I'm concerned at the levels of ignorance and othering being demonstrated on this thread.

No wonder MN is getting a reputation for being disablist.

Not all the volunteer groups will help.

I tried to get help during the first lockdown. They were only helping you if you were over 70 or CEV. Never mind that I couldn’t get a delivery slot and couldn’t physically walk more than about 10 steps - no help for me.

MercyBooth · 11/01/2021 19:55

MzHz · 11/01/2021 19:55

Other countries have fucking curfews! Like from 1pm on weekends...

Is that what we want here? Hell no. But that’s where we’ll end up when too many people are trying to bend the rules we do have.

Completely agree with this.

I'm sick of having to put myself at risk because of someone who bought a bloody lanyard online (my job requires less than 2m and often touching the face). I refuse to see anyone not wearing one.

MercyBooth · 11/01/2021 19:56

@alexdgr8 Well you dont care clearly

MzHz · 11/01/2021 19:57

We are a kind and caring nation, but we also have a bunch of entitled wankers

We need to protect those who need it, but we need to stop those who don’t give a shit about helping us all out of this mess.

sofiaaaaaa · 11/01/2021 19:59

I think the mask exemption list is currently too wide to be effective. It’s interesting that other countries manage to maintain high mask compliance, but here it’s almost like every other Brit has crippling anxiety that renders them impossible to wear.
