Nothing to exciting happened here today, a friend texted to see if I could print something for him and so I dropped it off to him this evening.

I gave the cats some catnip this evening and girl cat couldn't stand upright, boy cat was even more chilled than usual.

The postman called today not cos I had any post but cos he wanted to cuddle a cat (he misses cats as their family cat was run over a few weeks ago) and they are waiting to get kittens as the children want kittens. Cats were obliging and sat on top of the bin which was waiting to go out to the kerb and got petted and he sneaked a few treats when I pretended I wasn't looking, the devious way the cats turned their back to me so I wouldn't see.

soddingkitten · 22/01/2021 00:30

I ordered something small on Amazon on Wednesday morning with free postage to an Amazon locker nearby. I’m too mean to pay for next day delivery. It came the next day (Thursday) anyway, two days early. Result!

I also had an email to say my lovely ceramic RSPB bird bath is on its way. When it arrives I’ll be able to retrieve the plastic picnic plate the sparrows are currently using from our patio. I’m praying the new bird bath doesn’t become the site of a massacre/serial killer spree. 😱 I figure there are a couple of hours after sun-up before we open the cat flap when they can use it safely.

Sodding bit my toes when I was doing yoga, but he was striking other bits of me with soft paws thankfully.

Frownette · 22/01/2021 00:44

@Squirrel26 how did you do your test? Negative?

@Nydj and @EggyPegg my (old) friend is a nice person and highly intelligent so it baffles me she's got a blind spot about bringing up something which hurts me. I'll just respond reiterating that I don't want her to.

My sleep curse strikes again, I had a busy day then fell asleep very early after cooking when I got home. Just woke up.

MissConductUS · 22/01/2021 01:48

Kitten toe biting must be adorable. 😊

DH had to work late so he stopped and got a takeaway from McDonald's. It was quite tasty.

In reviewing covid hospitalization rates I learned that Alaska is the only state in the nation that is not subdivided into counties.

Domestic bliss here. Cat is howling as its 3am and where is her breakfast and DS is screaming at cat to shut up. She's just getting her 1st breakfast, argh.

Champagneforeveryone · 22/01/2021 03:27

DS was still up when I got home and mentioned in passing issues his friend A is having at home - he was sure he'd told me but he hadn't.

I was taken aback when he said that his small group of friends had taken it upon themselves to regularly message A individually to see how he's getting on (as well as in the group chat) and had chatted amongst themselves about how they could best support him. DS said they've already advised him to speak to staff at college, and are also encouraging him to keep up with his online work.

I was secretly very proud, particularly as the group seem genuinely concerned for A. It feels strange to be the parent of someone who seems to have adult levels of maturity Confused

Frownette · 22/01/2021 04:36

Champers that is really kind of them to be so empathic and look out for A.

silkie does it not work if you leave dry food for her during the night?

Cat obviously thinks you're playing, soddingkitten!

I haven't bought a 2021 diary yet Blush so am writing down dates to transfer over to it when I get one tomorrow. Someone had a go at me today (yesterday) for breaching COVID regs as I went inside elderly relative's house, but I act as their carer, was wearing a mask and it was only to unblock their loo rather than pay £50 for a call out. Several times flushing with washing up liquid and bucket of water poured from a height worked. I'm worried about this virulent strain which originated in Kent and apparently reduces the effectiveness of the vaccines.

Silkiechickscat · 22/01/2021 04:45

That's kind of you Frownette sorry someone had a go at you Bear

As we write Silkiecat is howling and has woken up DD this time - DD said she just wanted a DD cuddle. She always has dried food and water but she's after tuna, renal diet food, someone to put water in her tuna, someone to mash her tuna, cuddles, or just to make a point that no-one other than her should have attention. She gets worse if your respond to the first time, she then tends to do it all night long, every hour. I tell her to go to sleep and if its only me she goes back to sleep, she knows others are weaker and can be broken with howling. She sleeps next to her food and water bowls as she now has extra ones. She's got herself a single mattress. Not sure if its dementia or just diva behaviour.

mathanxiety · 22/01/2021 05:28

I had a post mortem phone call about the inauguration with my mum. She isn't a Lady Gaga fan but thought the National Anthem was done very nicely apart from the big red skirt, and she was thankful there were no 'gyrations'.

Frownette · 22/01/2021 06:51

Dress was schiaparelli, I used to covet their shocking pink hat boxes. Amanda Gorman was very powerful and I liked Biden's speech. Surprised that J.Lo sang, I doubt if I know any of her stuff.

Thanks silkie, I just rolled my eyes a bit when I was told. I did have difficulty keeping relative out of bathroom whilst I was in the process of unblocking it, nearly lost my temper. They were trying to fill up a cup and tip it down and getting in the way shrieking and I was saying crossly "that's not going to work".

What does the vet say about silkiecat? As far as I remember she was calmer when she was younger?

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 22/01/2021 07:42

Good morning,
there seems to be sun .....

Frownette · 22/01/2021 07:58

I daren't look out the window, doubt it would look as nice as your view! Grin

I've got an urge for tomato and feta pasta for breakfast so may go off and make it soon. Housework all morning then I have to head off at 12pm.

Squirrel26 · 22/01/2021 08:28

Covid test was negative, thank you for asking.

I am at work. My computer is SO SLOW.

Could you get something like this, or would she eat herself circular?www.googleadservices.com/pagead/aclk?sa=L&ai=DChcSEwjsgez1lK_uAhWTvu0KHdZpBakYABAMGgJkZw&ohost=www.google.com&cid=CAASEuRoTZmoYPzvz4-DKF4FNb4luA&sig=AOD64_3_uLZUHRRcAJF6ocRZMugw36zBYw&ctype=5&q=&ved=2ahUKEwiC6-T1lK_uAhUxQkEAHb86AaUQ9aACegQICBB7&adurl=

Frownette if you are your relative's carer and they are vulnerable then you are allowed inside the house. My DM was very independent-minded but frail to the point of being unable to do even simple things like eg change her own bed linen or reach up into kitchen cabinets (she wasn't very mobile and had to hold on to things), so my sibling had to go over regularly, masked and gloved-up, and help her - I live too far away and wasn't allowed to travel. There is a balance of risks you have to strike and her medical team told us this in no uncertain terms, they were very definite that a vulnerable elderly person couldn't be left completely alone to 'cope' if they basically couldn't cope.

Rant over, sorry, having now lost her (and not to Covid btw) I feel especially sensitive about this.

Other news: The window-cleaner came yesterday! We haven't seen him for months. He has a big pick-up vehicle and he'd brought a couple of his children to get them out of the house, even though they had to stay in the car. They must be bored senseless, poor things, so maybe even a drive around might have helped.

Silkiechickscat · 22/01/2021 10:19

The vet said she was fine and could find any physical health issues and she has permanent access to lots of food.

Trying to do online maths with DS and he's crying, so tired after a night of broken sleep with cat. She is of course sleeping now.

sproutsandparsnips · 22/01/2021 10:30

There have been terrible floods in our village after a mineshaft collapsed.
I am just mustering the wherewithal to go to bed after a night shift. Can't seem to get off the sofa.....
Frownette I believe the new strain is more transmissible but they have demonstrated that the vaccines will still work on it.

Silkiechickscat · 22/01/2021 11:33

Now trying to do English with DS and he appears to have locked himself in the bathroom and DD was complaining hard to do her GCSE lessons with a screaming DS.

Squirrel26 · 22/01/2021 11:53

Sounds stressful, @Silkiechickscat. Any news on if either DS or DD can go in to school? Or maybe the cat. Doggie daycare is still allowed to open here... Grin

Spudlet · 22/01/2021 11:54

@Frownette My mum, Aunty and uncle have all been caring for my grandma throughout this. She is far too frail to get by on her own, so they work in shifts so she always has some company, her food made for her (or she wouldn’t eat) and is ready for bed safely by the time they leave. If they weren’t doing it, a paid cater would need to and that’s far more of a risk to grandma in Covid terms, IMO. Caring is allowed!

Having an emotional rollercoaster of a day here - woke up feeling utterly flat then made the mistake of reading the Guardian which only made it worse, got hugely stressed out taking the car to the garage and ended up crying. However, we then got the bikes out and pedalled to the shop in the next village because we’d run out of a few things, and while we were there we got a takeaway coffee and cake from the butchers (they have diversified!) and the fresh air and exercise has helped. The coffee had caffeine as well as they couldn’t do decaf, so that’s also had an effect 🙃 So feeling a lot better now. I’m also very pleased to realise that I forgot something we needed, which would normally be a complete pain but in fact means I can go again tomorrow 👍 I may even get another coffee while I’m there. And I’ve spoken to mum, who had read not only the depressing article but a lot of others too, and so was able to put some perspective onto it.

So we are having a lazy homeschooling day, we’re going to make some asteroid cakes (rock buns!) in a minute which will be good maths practice, and we’ve done some reading. And that’s about all we’re planning to do, tbh. I’m tired and so is DS, and we can’t be full on with it every day. DS enjoyed his little trip to the shops so much, it was quite touching - I will take him again tomorrow.

Silkiechickscat · 22/01/2021 12:06

Thanks Squirrel He's just stomped downstairs - I was just playing it loudly, not sure if he could hear or not. DH asked if he should ask him but nope that's liable for an explosion and DD is trying to learn.

School offered one day a week to DS - Fridays though think they would have managed about an hour before sending him back and he was mute at suggestion then I said yes or no and he shouted No. The senco is trying to get day swapped for DD but very much doubt they will agree to that as DD does all her lessons (albeit with DS screaming in background). I did wonder if they take cats but cat is quiet and purring in the day as DH is with her and don't think school offer nightshifts. I did wonder about sending myself but its probably just other people's kids being difficult though DD says DS is the most difficult of all the children at school but they have quantity. I might go for the locking myself in a room option or hibernating until summer. Grin

soddingkitten · 22/01/2021 12:38

The kitten entertainment centre bird bath arrived this morning. I’ve placed it under a tree in a more open area of the garden, which I hope means the sparrows can have a good scan for predators before they use it.

Sodding spends inexplicably long periods sitting expectantly under a straggly valerian plant sticking out of the garden wall. It is entirely unexceptional so DH think that must be where he caught his unwary hen sparrow. We can’t explain his interest in it any other way.

Frownette · 22/01/2021 13:17

Thanks for the well wishes about providing care. I did think it was a bit silly someone complaining! Aww @HildaTablet Flowers

That's good to know about the new strain and vaccines, @sproutsandparsnips

forgetthehousework · 22/01/2021 14:53

Went in to the village this morning for essential supplies (milk and chocolate). Saw an ambulance and then a funeral procession which upset me even more than usual, then realised that today would have been my Mothers birthday. She died over thirty years ago, but my emotions are just nearer the surface today.

Labobo · 22/01/2021 14:56

Ah @forgetthehousework that is tough Flowers to you. And Brew

I'm feeling under the weather. Went for a short walk in frost and sun. Did a morning's work but now flatlined.

I am currently remaining convinced that if I stare at an online recipe for long enough the ingredients will get up and cook themselves. That's how it works, right?
