Moisturiser - if you had a limited budget what would you suggest?

My thirties have crept up on me and I need a decent.. or at least affordable.. moisturiser. My skin is generally dry, can be oily around the T zone during TOTM.
My husband is currently the sole wage earner so although I have some money to myself I'm looking under the £10 mark. Not looking for miracles, just hoping for a decent no frills product that will prevent if not cure!

Another Aldi Caviar user here. It doesn’t make me break out in any more spots than my hormones already provide, which is handy. Stupid hormones!

Elwynne · 07/01/2021 10:24

This winter my face suddenly reacted to my expensive oil serums and moisturiser and I looked like a sporty, flakey, bag of smashed crabs Shock, out of desperation and temporary cash flow issues I tried the blue tin Nivea and my skin looks really good! I googled it after a week to see if it was bad to keep putting on my face and it turns out that it is very similar to more expensive products like creme de mer (as other posters have said). I'm going to keep going with it until the end of winter and then switch to something with an spf.

SillyUnMurphy · 07/01/2021 10:24

I absolutely love the M&S Formula Sensitive Day Cream. It really suits my skin, which is also dry with an oily t-zone. It's £5.50 and lasts a good few months.
The Aldi one makes my eyes sting really badly.

Aldi range is good

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 07/01/2021 10:33

Thanks! I’ve just remembered I can order Aldi online.

BarbaraofSeville · 07/01/2021 10:35

Anything with SPF, that's all you need. I've never paid more than £10 and am currently using Simple. Have also used Boots, Nivea etc. Only one I don't like is Aldi, because it was very strongly perfumed, which just annoyed me. Which is a shame because I generally like whatever Aldi sell.

I like the look of that Superdrug one and might try that next.

I'm convinced that if all these moisturisers were put in plain packaging and people tested them with no idea as to whether they were cheap or expensive, no-one would be be able to reliably tell which is which.

OchonAgusOchonO · 07/01/2021 10:36

Nivea soft. It's great. You can use it on body or face.

HelebethH · 07/01/2021 10:39

Nivea soft . Use on face and body. Also good old vashioned Astral

awwkkwwaard · 07/01/2021 10:39

Nivea

Nonamesavail · 07/01/2021 10:43

I use the aldi one is really nice

Branleuse · 07/01/2021 10:44

i quite like the classic olay beauty fluid and its pretty cheap

teta · 07/01/2021 10:56

Cerave - cheap , suitable for sensitive skin, with all the latest skincare ingredients & with/without spf.

GingerNorthernLass · 07/01/2021 10:57

Superdrug Vitamin E.

I used to use Simple but this is just as good.

There’s a lot of similar suggestions on here. Lots of them are well established brands with formulas that have been around for decades. If that works for your skin type then great! Unfortunately, for myself I’ve really had to try and test a lot of different products as my skin has aged.

May I suggest looking at some of the newer, more innovative brands that are around now? The formulations are very active ingredient driven and their websites are helpful in being able to pick the right product. They’re all below that £10 mark too for almost all products. I’ve listed some of these brands below.

Carbon Theory (best for spot prone skin)
FaceTheory
The INKey List (a fantastic brand with good resources online for picking the right product)
The Ordinary (good for single ingredient formulas)

All are 100% cruelty free too unlike nivea etc.

Lessstressedhemum · 07/01/2021 11:18

Body Shop Hemp cream.

That's good to know.

I use some of The Ordinary but find it quite confusing to know what to use when.

I've just discovered the INKey List and like what I've tried.

Boots Ingredients do many similar products to The INKey List and The ordinary. I've used their Bakuchiol Serum and find it really good.

PinotNoir1 · 07/01/2021 11:25

Another vote for Nivea soft. Used it for years and love it.

1940s · 07/01/2021 11:25

Superdrug own brand stuff - very extensive range so worth a potter on their website to really suss what you want. All cruelty free abs very often 3fpr2. I really really rate it and I'm sure all of it is vegan too?

1940s · 07/01/2021 11:27

Nivea isn't a cruelty free brand so I would avoid it

ItMustBeBedtimeSurely · 07/01/2021 11:27

The Ordinary Natural moisturising factors is excellent and comes in a massive tube.

chestnutshell · 07/01/2021 11:29

@OchonAgusOchonO yes it’s confusing isn’t it! I find the INKey list website so helpful for learning how to layer. Not just for their own products but for other brands too.

I found a few decent articles online about how to layer and which products not to use together. That helped me a lot. I think the ordinary is great but can’t be used as a complete skincare routine because it’s just single ingredients for what you need. For example, I have hyperpigmentation so I use their niacinamide a few times a week before moisturiser to help (and it really does!).

mrstea301 · 07/01/2021 11:33

I go between astral, nivea and Lidl / Aldi, but I'm loving astral at the moment, remind me of my gran and she always had fabulous skin!!

DannyGlickWindowTapping · 07/01/2021 11:35

The Ordinary. Has hyaluronic acid in, works all over the face and neck. Less than £7 for 100ml. You will need an spf on top, but I think that's the case for everything mentioned so far.

chestnutshell · 07/01/2021 11:36

@DannyGlickWindowTapping good point. We should all be applying SPF everyday reminds self

SomeoneInTheLaaaaaounge · 07/01/2021 11:37

Nivea q10 Age Spot (or something)
It’s also factor 30
Sadly it will be trial and error until you find one you like
