Another thread in the saga filled up (so no forwards link)

I think maybe we're endurance athletes, or maybe multievent like a decathlon Grin

In the Telegraph magazine on saturday, Selina Scott was explaining 'her saturday'. Quote; " I feel lucky to have a 200 acre farm in North Yorkshire that I can walk around without picking up covid.....I'll be sorry when lockdown comes to an end: I enjoy being able to do exactly as I want with no commitments." Unbelievable, isn't it? However, I wonder if this is a widespread thought amongst those who are 'better placed'? Tough titty if you are a struggling single mum living in a flat with 3 kids and no outdoor space.
Wow, what a twit she is.

Unfortunately I think this type of attitude is very common. I certainly it is true of some on the Other Board. I suspect a lot of those screaming for lockdown are those who are comfortably placed, have space, can WFH in a home office, kids have the ability to have home schooling etc.

Think it's a fairly widespread view on here to be honest. There's no compassion or understanding for those who are in a different set of circumstances to slightly older kids, roomy house enough for everyone to have their own working space, nice large garden big enough to not be on top of the neighbours and usually a private school providing decent amounts of online learning.

Hell first lockdown the kids ended up with my mum for 3 weeks just because she had a bit more space for them in terms of garden and house space to play - they'd have killed each other stuck in a 2 bed semi with me and DH both trying to work in the lounge - and compared to many out there in the real world - we're doing OK in terms of living conditions.

FFS, if I see one more post on schools thread that confidently proclaims that all children who might struggle to access remote learning for any reason will be given a school place under the “vulnerable children” category I will lose my mind. Why are people so gullible? I have to say the government have pulled a blinder in convincing the general public that this is the case when it clearly isn’t.

That Selena Scott quote makes me think of the line from Karma Police by Radiohead; “when I am king you will be first against the wall”. I’m in a brilliant mood this morning as you can probably tell...

Worldgonecrazy · 04/01/2021 09:10

The Mall at Cribbs Causeway in Bristol has a large mural dedicated to those who have died of / with Covid. Every time I see it I think how fucking insensitive to those who have lost relatives to non Covid deaths, especially as we have been unable to carry out our usual human mourning rituals which help us with healing.

It's not true, is it? That if DC struggle with remote learning they can have a place? DD1 and DS are home educated now but DD2 loves school and can't do remote learning for toffee.

Thank you all for this thread. I feel there is sanity here! I have been wanting to ask this, but feel anywhere else would be told to put tinfoil hat on or be declared a Russian bot! I hope that can put my thoughts coherently..
So we're all locking down because 'the virus' doesn't discriminate and other posters always go on about how they know 8 people under 50 who have died/been significantly unwell/have long covid and been marathon runners super-duper healthy no underlying conditions. And this is loudly agreed by others. So if this is the case and we are all equally vulnerable why the waiting list order for the vaccine? I have absolutely no issue that the gov are doing this as I do believe people with significant underlying conditions are at risk, but I do find it confusing!

rosettesforjill · 04/01/2021 09:42

@MichelleScarn my suspicion is that these claims may be somewhat embellished - either numbers of people, health of the person, it's a friend of a friend of a friend etc. I don't doubt that there are some people with no underlying conditions who have become seriously ill or died, but it's difficult to believe that so many people know so many of these cases.

There's also an element of people who do know these people shouting loudest because they are the most scared having actually experienced this, and I do try to have some sympathy for that.

Worldgonecrazy · 04/01/2021 09:47

The virus does discriminate and anyone who says differently hasn’t looked at the data around deprivation index and mortality.

Age is the biggest risk factor but after that obesity and poor health, overcrowded multi generational living and other factors associated with poverty are major contributors to mortality.

I've had this in reverse- my Great Uncle went into hospital with Covid back in November. He's nearly 90, very frail and has had breathing difficulties for decades, has had to sleep hooked up to a machine for sleep apnea since I can remember. He recovered and was back out by December!

TooManyPlatesInMotion · 04/01/2021 10:13

On a whim, I have signed up to a virtual running challenge, as a result of which I am now committed to running 150km across the course of Jan. It is something to do. I have some fab "open" headphones so I can safely listen to music and podcasts while running. I definitely need to get out the house a shift some of the pounds.

AcornAutumn · 04/01/2021 10:16

TooMany what are open headphones please?

AaahWoof · 04/01/2021 10:28

My airpods pro have a transparency mode on them so you can hear background and environmental noise as well as your music - could be similar to that?

I tend to use them in noise cancelling without even music playing a lot of the time these days to cope with how living inside my head is a fucked up place to be.

rosettesforjill · 04/01/2021 10:32

I have bone conducting ones - they rest outside of your ear so you can still hear what's going on in your surroundings.

Yes, this is what I meant by "open". They are great. Lightweight, long battery life, you can operate them by a quick tab on the side. I can hear traffic, bikes, footsteps behind me and my music. I never, ever ran to music due to worries about personal safety (I run in the evenings) but my headphones have changed that. I love them!

Something really ought to be done so that it’s possible for wealthy older people to stay in their own property as much as they want when there’s no lockdown. I can’t believe that the government haven’t done anything about this, they just don’t care.

I'm amazed that not only does she feel like this, but she's tone deaf enough to say so!

It's like all the people who begged for Christmas to be cancelled because they were fed up of hosting/cooking/cleaning year on year.... grow a pair and communicate your boundaries!

Yes, the threads that should have been rephrased as "AIBU to expect the entire country to be put in lockdown measures because I don't want to stand up to my family?"
Taswama · 04/01/2021 13:48

Hard to believe that someone as well known as Selena Scott doesn't already have the option to do exactly as she wants!

In other news, senior management at my work have advised that staff in tier 4 shouldn't be travelling into the office unless for welfare reasons or because they cannot do their jobs at home. So basically the same as since March then apart from a brief attempt at getting people back in September. The very few people in the office now (including me) are there for those reasons. Don't make people justify that they need to be there all over again. I'm not in tier 4 but one of my team, who has been going in weekly is. She was going to cancel but I said if it's beneficial to her mental health to go in, she has my support to do so.
Mental health is like physical health imo - you shouldn't wait until you are 20 stone before eating healthily, equally if there are some activities that keep you on an even keel mentally (exercise, seeing / talking to friends/ family, seeing colleagues) them keep doing them if you can rather than waiting until you reach breaking point.
(Rant over)

I'm keeping one up. It's a little fake one, it's decorated in silver and white and I'm declaring it a winter tree. It's tucked away in an alcove so I reckon I can get away with it til the end of January at least.
Reedwarbler · 04/01/2021 14:03

Just spoken to some friends who live very remotely, but locally, and was amazed to discover they have been vaccinated. I am so pleased for them because they have been terrified for months (both over 80). They have been very isolated by Covid, (live literally in a house in the middle of a field with no neighbours) I just hope it gives them a little more courage to get out, even if it is just for simple things. I also didn't know they had started vaccinating in this area. However, it would seem that the virus is doing a better job of creating immunity at the moment than the NHS, by infecting about 350000 people a week.
Don't like to crow but I had a reassuringly normal morning with a trip to my hygienist, followed by a visit to the post office and the co-op. One advantage of the current circumstances are the quiet roads and easy parking at least. I live near the village school and that all seems as normal today as well. It's funny how such small bits of news and mundane activities can perk you up.
