Another thread in the saga filled up (so no forwards link)

I think maybe we're endurance athletes, or maybe multievent like a decathlon Grin

@BogRollBOGOF I hope this doesn’t sound patronising as I really don’t mean it that way but you are so much more than a SAHM. I had to go back to work when DS was less than a year old because I couldn’t hack staying at home with him, it was too hard. Anyone who stays at home to raise their family is absolutely amazing in my eyes and they certainly don’t get the recognition they deserve.

Ive given up reading the infection rate and death toll articles in the papers and just go to NHS England and the Government Covid Dashboard for information. It’s easier to take it in without the dramatic headlines and hand wringing.

CruCru · 09/01/2021 10:55

I hope your brother gets better soon LivinLaVidaLoki.

flower11 · 09/01/2021 10:56

Hospitals are always busy at this time of year. As far as I know the government made no plans and were very head in the sand and we can lock down the pleabs that will do.
I think alot of people are acquiring it in hospitals and care homes and dying with covid along side what they were in for. I have some anecdotal stories of this from nurses eg 1 patient affecting the rest of the ward, 20 patients cause there is no separation .
I have had the vaccine as manager booked everyone an appointment .

And @Tmpnamechange it appears no contingency planning or shoring up the NHS has been done. I really don’t get it.

I suspect there were plans drawn up at a very local level (my dept has a "worse case scenario" contingency plan, for example). I think it's harder to run them successfully because of the scale of the situation.

I think that certain people high up in govt (looking at Matt & Gavin, for example) have been convinced that their own plans of Track & Trace, & Exams Will Happen would work and they haven't pushed any back up plans.

We're still no clearer about how student assessment will happen, & they could've had a back up plan ready to go by now. Instead we have them crossing their fingers in health & education. Very frustrating.

Reedwarbler · 09/01/2021 11:03

It's obvious that lockdowns don't work now (or ever).
I was wondering if people who are ill enough with covid to need medical treatment, are actually asked what their movements have been? Is this actually recorded anywhere? Surely this would be of interest statistically? For example, if I got it, the only possible places would be in retail settings, as otherwise I have no contact with anyone other than my H usually. We keep very much to ourselves.

ISaySteadyOn · 09/01/2021 11:06

I am giggling because this morning, I opened up the Pokémon Go app whilst sitting in my bed. It told me that I was going too fast and oughtn't to be driving. Grin.

Tmpnamechange · 09/01/2021 11:12

On asking people about their movements, it's likely to give a skewed idea that people are catching it in supermarkets as it's unlikely that people are going to admit to anything they're not supposed to have done .
A well designed anonymous survey might have been useful. ( I'm really not blaming people here, given its against human nature to be separated for so long.)

I'm back to, better to let people meet in cafés where there are controls, than watch them get to breaking point and need to find some company where the controls aren't in place.

Weedsnseeds1 · 09/01/2021 11:12

ISaySteadyOn don't worry about the video, I found it quite thought provoking, as a piece of performance art, which is what it was intended to be.

Tmpnamechange · 09/01/2021 11:15

I really expected by now that the streets would have been lined with sheltered outdoor areas, with heaters and trying to think outside the box to get some sort of enjoyable ways to get human contact through the winter.
I'm flabbergasted that instead, yet again people are screaming at each other to stay home ( though thankfully in less quantities than in spring)

Mrsfrumble · 09/01/2021 11:23

Yes, I quite liked video. It was hyperbole, but it was also a well executed piece of performance art. Contemporary art is supposed to be provocative and dissenting (IMHO).

In the spring and summer I was impressed at how enterprising businesses were at adapting to survive. A local farm has already launched a doorstep delivery service with their own products and collaboration with other small businesses. They're now testing the ground about ready meals... very tempting!

I don't know whether Nightingales could have been made more logistically functional. If so just transferring staffing over so it's largely kept in a seperate environment would surely help reduce in-hospital spread.

I've had a good wallow and vent over the past few days. I was already jaded from a rather flat Christmas and looking forwards to picking up routines. I've now defuzzed so I look more human than yeti, and have got rid of a few inches of annoying dry ends on my actual hair. That feels a bit better.

@Weedsnseeds1, @AaahWoof, @Mrsfrumble, thanks for the kind words. I just worried I could have caused someone extra distress which was the last thing I wanted.

GarlandaChynoweth · 09/01/2021 12:09

Bloody terrified now that government are going to change tack to a 'keep children home if you possibly can' message and I'm going to lose the one day a week in school key worker place I've got for the DC. For DS1 mental health mainly although I think it will hugely benefit the other two.

WouldBeGood · 09/01/2021 12:30

I don’t think they will do they @GarlandaChynoweth given how many children are in - looks like people want their children in school so it would be very unpopular

rosettesforjill · 09/01/2021 12:36

Looking at Zoe app the rates seem to be starting to drop pretty much everywhere so I would have thought they will keep on as is for a while. I do think that lockdowns "work" in terms of bringing rates down, but I feel like this one wouldn't have been needed if we had a more competent government.

GarlandaChynoweth · 09/01/2021 12:45

@WouldBeGood good point. As far as I know our school has finalised their numbers now and although they've got a lot more than last time, it's not like ten doctors are going to crawl out of the woodwork next week realising they need a place is it? I will definitely be classed as a 'pisstaker' as I WFH (or not when I'm apparently home schooling) and DH (the keyworker) often does too. However, I didn't take places last year and it sent DS1 incredibly low and did nothing for any of us so I'm not feeling so charitable now.

WouldBeGood · 09/01/2021 12:46

Dcs need the contact. I think schools are trying to make people feel guilty, but ignore it!

ISaySteadyOn · 09/01/2021 12:47

We're going to need a new thread. Did we decide on ADs may have buggered boilers but we haven't got the clap?

Gratefulrunner · 09/01/2021 12:49

@GarlandaChynoweth sounds like I’m similar to you with a dh key worker who sometimes works at home and my job which is wfh but v busy and needs concentration etc. Mine are going in. I might actually love our headteacher, the school is amazing the way it seems to cope with everything thrown at them

Tmpnamechange · 09/01/2021 13:05

The thing is, home schooling aside, I think women are so tuned in to their kids that its really hard to focus on work. I've always had to wait for them to be in bed, do that I knew I was pretty much off duty, before I could get anything done. From speaking to friends, men find that much easier.

CoffeeWithCheese · 09/01/2021 13:17

There was definitely that going on this week - now the head has mellowed (I'm still fuming with the way she went on) and is being much more cooperative finding me extra sessions for DD2 as numbers stabilise - I'm sorry but a kid who lost their bloody speech last time around, with a mum having a breakdown IS vulnerable and needs school stability.

(Name change btw)

I'm hoping now the initial rush is over that attendance across the board will be looked at, realised it's not too bad and it will be quietly dropped and the shout y people will move onto the next thing to be outraged about (as per lockdown 1, there were plenty of "too many keyworkers" threads then as well)

Not at all. Just that it's the kind of thinking that keeps me awake too and I totally recognize that fear especially at 3am. But I really hope and in my positive moments believe it won't be like that forever. It's a bad precedent for the government to set but I do believe that when the vaccine starts working particularly on the most vulnerable and the fear dies down that people like Lord Sumption will hopefully still hold the government to account.
