Another thread in the saga filled up (so no forwards link)

I think maybe we're endurance athletes, or maybe multievent like a decathlon Grin

@AaahWoof

I have to be honest and say that if we see a further increase in children in school then something will have to give and that, I am very much afraid, will have to be the high level of teacher interaction with learning in the home that we currently offer and would like to continue. It is my hope that numbers have now stabilised and that this will not be necessary.

From my kids' school - threatening us with not supporting the kids at all if people dare need school places

That sounds potentially counter-productive to me, as it's the precision for kids not in school that would be affected. So if you get that, and you want your child to be assured of teacher interaction, you'd do anything you can to get them in.

On a related but different note, spare a thought for some of my friends, who, like a lot of parents in Wales, don't speak Welsh but have their children in Welsh medium education! (Although presumably there's families in England with parents with no English who are supposed to be doing this.)

Sonicthehedgehogg · 06/01/2021 20:16

I'm well overdue a namechange because I overshare and I'm pretty sure people would be able to work our what I do for a living etc by now....

Will have to have a think.

BogRollBOGOF · 06/01/2021 21:37

I was probably overdue a name change about 6 months ago. I've got through my bogroll stash and topped back up since then (and yes wiyh my DCs at home FT, we do get through them Grin

@LivinLaVidaLoki DH has COPD and ischemic heart disease. He uses a mobility scooter. He had a heart attack in 2006 but also used to smoke. Hes 71 so grew up in a time when most people smoked.

DrRamsesEmerson · 06/01/2021 21:46

I’ve changed my name (do it regularly, this was a bit overdue) but it’s not a brilliant disguise!

🎤Is that youuuuu baby Or just a brilliant disguise?🎤

Sorry, you know I love a random music interlude.

That song is a brilliant example of songwriting and storytelling.

SirSamuelVimes · 06/01/2021 22:13

I should change names more but I get rely attached to them. I don't want to stop being Sam Vimes! Blush

BogRollBOGOF · 06/01/2021 22:41

I'm still in a BOGOF kind of mood. I was in a grump when I name changed and it seemed like a good pun against the empty supermarket shelves at that point. Having been to Costco a month earlier before bogrolls became trendy the my stocks did look like I'd had buy one get one free on them Grin

It's a laugh if anyone thinks I'm a Covid denier... we modified our behaviour from mid-Feb. We were going to go to London at half term, but changed to Manchester as it was plausible that London (especially the tube) would be more likely to be an entry and spread point into the UK. DH had to go to London overnight at the end of Feb but avoided public transport. Early March I was supposed to see DM but cancelled because I was having regular cold symptoms (she was recently out of hospital and aquired a nasty chest infection in there... plus had a DVT scare soon after...) We took it with caution a month or so before the majority!

Sam Vimes is the best, I don’t blame you. I can’t think of name.

You can tell I've been practicing my keyboard today 😂
No points for guessing what song that is.

Littlebelina · 06/01/2021 22:51

Can't be arsed with name changes, sure I'm identifiable if you look hard enough.

Today's yelling about too many people sending their kids to school this time got me browsing threads of the lockdown 1 -what do you think I found (spoiler alert, there were several back in march)

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/coronavirus/3855286-so-many-children-still-going-to-school-next-week

Like fucking groundhog day

Dollybagwash · 06/01/2021 23:12

I haven't read since yesterday but @wanderings your posts made me look into tony Blair. I was a teenager then but have memories. I've watched some films relating to it. I don't claim to know everything but the propaganda is real.

The protests are all conspiracy theory though so I feel lost.

Sorry if I hijacked ADs

Agree that sounds very counterproductive. “If you send your children in we’ll have to punish the people who are not sending their children in” Confused

I know this makes me sound extremely paranoid, but I do worry that with so many children in school anyway, the government will feel under less pressure to open schools fully, especially as the general public who don’t have school-aged children believe that schools are “properly” closed for safety reasons. Meh. Need to get off MN for the night I think.

thenightsky · 07/01/2021 00:09

“If you send your children in we’ll have to punish the people who are not sending their children in

That's a very 'teacher' thing to do though isn't it? You, boy at the back, stop talking or the whole class will have to stay in at playtime.

Charles Walker has been great.

The thread about bubbles...I think there's a virus going round that's hitting people's IQ.

NannyGythaOgg · 07/01/2021 00:27

@Mrsfrumble I don't think many non parents/teachers really care if schools are open or closed - except in how the roads are busier at start and end time.

I believe a majority of parents (and I think teachers) would rather they were open so long as fine were not being given for non attendance. How big a majority I am not sure.

Jourdain11 · 07/01/2021 00:36

Yeah, it was Charles Walker who I was speaking about the other day - who made the speech saying that we were infantilising old people and not actually asking them whether they wanted to be "protected" or not..

NannyGythaOgg · 07/01/2021 01:41

@Jourdain11

Judging by posts elsewhere though, that is irrelevant. It's only about protecting the elderly when it suits. The rest of the time, the elderly should be locked away so they can't catch anything and selfishly need the NHS resources who can be better occupied looking after whoever the poster deems deserving.

Think of the fuss made about the elderly daring to go to garden centres.

110APiccadilly · 07/01/2021 02:11

There's also still posts going on about how unfair it is that the elderly get the vaccine first when they could just stay at home safe for longer. And yet it's those of us who suggested the elderly and vulnerable stayed safe at home while there wasn't a vaccine and the rest of us cracked on with life who are the granny-murderers, is it?

110APiccadilly · 07/01/2021 02:15

(Anyone healthy who thinks they should join the vaccine queue ahead of my gran, who's been locked up in a care home for the last ten months to "protect" her, needs to go and look for their basic humanity. With a very powerful microscope, or they won't be likely to find it.)

agreed on behalf of your gran and all the others who have been held with no regard to human rights.

I am feeling horribly guilty about sending DD in but DH is a teacher. I am not. However, she struggled last time and in the end the school suggested both she and DS came in. So we sent her this time. I did check with the deputy head yesterday and asked if we were taking up a space someone else needed and he said no, it was fine. But I am still feeling very bad. DH won't countenance having her home though.

Iheartmysmart · 07/01/2021 07:29

DS has left school now but if I was in a position where a school place was available for him then I absolutely would not feel guilty for taking it up. You need to do what is best for your children and nobody else has the right to judge you for doing that and you certainly shouldn’t feel bad about it.

I can’t believe we are in a situation where people feel bad for sending their children to school. It is so fucked up.

I absolutely agree with you.

I could use a key worker place - I'm not (for now as childcare bubble are having DS - although 6 weeks may be pushing it). I am sure a lot of people on MN would have a go at me if i did. Without massively outing myself, I work for an education provider and am currently supporting sorting out school Covid testing for when they go back, among a number of other non Covid related projects that are essential to the schools being able to educate their children.

DS's timetable is full and well structured (the school have done really well with it) but it requires a lot of parental input. I could not do this and work full time, even from home. And the reality of our situation is that if anyone needs to take a financial hit, it will have to be me. So I would be taking unpaid leave and leaving my employer in the lurch.

I don't begrudge anyone taking up a key worker place. I think a lot of people here don't understand the complexity of the systems that keep hospitals, schools, retail etc. running.
