Another thread in the saga filled up (so no forwards link)

I think maybe we're endurance athletes, or maybe multievent like a decathlon Grin

Annemarie Plas will be first against the wall, once this is over.
I accidently took some rubbish to the bin at 8pm on a Thursday once and was trapped their for 10 minutes Sad

Orangeblossom77777 · 06/01/2021 14:26

That Williamson twit after saying exams are definitely going ahead is now saying it will be teacher assessed grades

When many have not even done mocks (scheduled this week or next)

makes so much sense Confused

Hand held needed. OH gone full on dementor. We cannot see grandkids because play group is still open, I cannot do this again three months or more with just him. He said I can move out, there is an airbnb my DIL has that I could move into, then I could see them because OH would be living alone so will be safe. I thought we had got past this because he does doubt the figures positive cases daily. But no he says if we get it we will die. Him 70 me 64.

TooManyPlatesInMotion · 06/01/2021 14:34

@MoltenLasagne yes, my thought exactly in relation to that video. I imagine it is very hard for medical professionals who disagree with the current narrative to speak out. I actually felt extremely grateful that the medic in the video did so.

flower11 · 06/01/2021 14:39

Just asking
So sorry for you that's really shit. My 74 year old neighbour with copd albeit well managed survived covid.

My stance is there are only 2 certainties in life death and taxes. I hope I don't go anytime soon for the sake of my children, otherwise I don't care, everyone has to go sometime of some thing.

People have lost all sense of perspective especially in relation to death and risk.

Flowers To be honest I would go to the air BnB, as long as it's decent accommodation and you can be comfortable there. Then you are s single household and can form a support bubble with your family & see them / grandchildren as much as you like.

I know it's easy to say, but I don't think I could live with being dictated to by my DH like that.

AcornAutumn · 06/01/2021 14:49

@wanderings

If the fucking clap happens, I shall be shouting "Boo for Boris" through a megaphone. Yes, really, I have one: bought for sports tournaments that didn't happen last summer.
Oh wow, cool.

I am SO tempted to get a sign saying "protect the nhs - commit suicide" but I'd probably get a police visit.

Re death and taxes - yes, and I am very worried about taxes, I can't believe how much nonsense there is to pay for now.

dingit · 06/01/2021 14:51

Not just taxes. I was reading the Martin Lewis bulletin and there is a real possibility of negative interest rates Sad

I am so sorry

It would be best if one of you moved out.

It's funny, I appreciate the sentiment that this hard for those of us living alone but mum and I have long thought it can be harder if you live with someone. Flowers

Oh yes, that was scaring the bejesus out of me last year.

However, if I went bankrupt there would only be one option for me and it's the one that solves all. 🤷🏻‍♀️

TooManyPlatesInMotion · 06/01/2021 14:57

@justasking111 I would also go to the airbnb. Flowers

Sonicthehedgehogg · 06/01/2021 14:59

A friend of mine split with her husband last Christmas and was plunged into living alone in quite spectacular fashion with the first lockdown. And yet we all agreed she was better off alone than stuck in a house with the prick.

Sonicthehedgehogg · 06/01/2021 15:04

@TooManyPlatesInMotion

Reading all the comments on this thread (and its previous incarnations) really has helped keep me reasonably sane recently.

Today, however, I am full of fear and anxiety. My greatest fear is not Covid, but rather that the government will never get us out of this series of destructive and ultimately futile lockdowns and that all the things that make life bearable let alone fun will remain out of reach. I'm scared and angry for my kids, for all of us tbh. Yet there are so many people IRL who don't think this current lockdown is severe enough and are busy berating other people for going out to walk in the sodding park, calling for us to inform on each other and just lick ourselves indoors.

The government appears to have tied itself in knots on many fronts, and I find it increasingly hard to see how they will change course, even with vaccines. In part perhaps this is because they tune in to the advice of only a very narrow group of medical experts. There is never sufficient discussion of the other side of the ledger (ie the immense cost - in all senses - of repeated and ineffective lockdowns). I wonder if this period will change our attitude towards risk forever.

Anyway, I don't voice my views to many people IRL as I get called a callous granny murdering loon. I'll be OK, just a rubbish day.

Don't forget what happened in the summer. FOMO got most of them by the goolies. My brother was a sanctimonious knob to start... doing lockdown harder and better than us and making sure we knew it... until EOTHO. He was having three meals out a week before you could say "hypocrite".

People will move with each easing we (eventually) get. We are social creatures and society will naturally return to that.

TooManyPlatesInMotion · 06/01/2021 15:09

@Sonicthehedgehogg that's quite amusing re your brother.

This is an 18 minute video, so quite long, but so fascinating and if all the points this very sensible sounding Consultant Pathologist makes are true then it’s equally so frustrating and quite frankly outrageous that the real and available science and data is being ignored.
In summary, Dr Clare Craig is saying that PCR tests are extremely unreliable and can easily create a false sense of an epidemic, that other types of testing actually showed that there was very little covid in Liverpool and that all deaths for most other causes and expected every year are hugely down. She also says that she is surprised with claims of asymptomatic spread and the lack of immunity, both of which seem to have received very little proper research. She compares immunity to SARS-Cov1 which has similar properties to covid 19 and so far they can prove at least 17 years of immunity as that’s how long since that virus was first detected.
The final point I drew from this interview is that up to 50% of people seem to be naturally immune already because of covid’s similar properties to a thousand other types of common cold.

Why is data (and common sense) like this being ignored?

That was well worth watching, but very frustrating that it doesn't seem to be out there in the press for all to see. Everything she says makes total sense.
Sonicthehedgehogg · 06/01/2021 15:26

He's an absolute tit at the best of time's... but only I get to say it. Sibling rights Grin

When the time is right, he will be greatly mocked by the family. But we'll wait until we can all get round the table together so we can all enjoy it.

Worldgonecrazy · 06/01/2021 15:30

@thenightsky

I believe the press are aware. But they are cowardly. Ofcom is warning all mainstream media to stay within COVID guidance, ie support the government stance. None of them are willing to speak out except for TalkRadio, who had their YouTube channel temporarily removed yesterday. Unfortunately due to their pro Brexit stance Talk Radio are dismissed by many people as the UKs version of Fox News.

It’s like shouting at a wall

Reedwarbler · 06/01/2021 15:31

Yes, fascinating video thanks.
Do you think there will be a day of reckoning eventually, when there is a public enquiry about all this, and some of the facts that are being hidden/glossed over by the government actually get an airing?
I have never seen or heard anyone clap for carers hereabouts, so I can't see it happening here. Anyway, it's bloody cold for standing out (and dark) and is it really a good idea to encourage people to mingle, which is what happens from what I've seen on the tv? Heroes my arse.

MoltenLasagne · 06/01/2021 15:44

I keep saying to DH that I can't wait for the reviews in 5, 10 whatever years where we will finally be able to acknowledge the dodginess of the data. Unless it gets locked up for national security of course.

NastyBlouse · 06/01/2021 15:48

@Reedwarbler

Yes, I do, but I think it'll slink out under the 30-year rule in 2051.

Sonicthehedgehogg · 06/01/2021 15:49

Has anyone read the Freakanomics books?

They're the ones I want doing a review Grin

NastyBlouse · 06/01/2021 15:55

I feel that the public mood for clapping has soured. I certainly won't be doing it (didn't last time). I have yet to meet a public service worker who thought it was useful or good beyond the very first one.

I feel that Ms Plas has misread the temperature of the room on this one.

Orangeblossom77777 · 06/01/2021 15:58

Who is she anyway?

Weedsnseeds1 · 06/01/2021 16:05

Lostinacloud interesting.
I would love to see some research into levels of pre-existing immunity. I have long joked that I must be immune. If its that contagious how have I not caught it on all the long haul flights end of 2019, start of 2020 (work related) mingling with Chinese and Hong Kong nationals, short haul flights, tubes in London the week before lock down 1, a train packed with Cheltenham racegoers, dozens of factories with cases ranging from a handful to a couple of hundred? It's not the mask wearing, because mainly I wasn't wearing one, as it wasn't required until quite recently.
Mind you, I didn't get SARS either, despite staying in the Metropol hotel with Dr. Death when it all kicked off in Hong Kong!

wanderings · 06/01/2021 16:19

With this soundbite of "lockdown may be needed next winter":

We need to start protesting this NOW, in any way we can. There's no doubt they're saying this now so they can say later "we did warn you", and also the usual strategy of "leak it to the press to see how the plebs react". We need to start making our opposition to this clear NOW, not showing a resigned acceptance. This is what I had feared all along. Lockdown has set a MASSIVE precedent, given them an emergency power, which they are not going to want to relinquish: they might even impose it "because they can". If we let this happen, every Christmas will be as miserable as the one we just had, which flies straight in the face of the dementors preaching "just suck it up this year, there will always be next Christmas". NO THERE FUCKING WON'T if this happens.

We need to GET ANGRY!
