Another thread in the saga filled up (so no forwards link)

I think maybe we're endurance athletes, or maybe multievent like a decathlon Grin

@LivinLaVidaLoki
That must be a worry. No advice, except to wait for official confirmation & ask the consultant? And then maybe ask where to get some online advice & support from, rather than panic-googling now.

Yet another thing for you to deal with. Flowers

DrRamsesEmerson · 06/01/2021 12:53

I don't want to spread doom and gloom- of course you're right that the regulations could be modified before the end of March. But even Johnson the lying liar had just told MPs that they should be very cautious about expecting schools to return in February. I read that as basically acknowledging that we've got lockdown, or something close to it, till the end of March.

I don't know about schools being closed beyond that, but there's now so much hysteria and panic that I wouldn't be surprised if the goalposts moved and they decided not to bring them back till all teachers have been vaccinated. It seems to me completely unjustified, but this Government has done plenty of things that were completely unjustified, and the trend has always been promising easing of restrictions and not delivering. Anyone remember 'substantial normality by Christmas'? So if they're admitting in public now that schools might not return this academic year, it's highly likely that they won't.

AcornAutumn · 06/01/2021 12:58

Orchid "Forgive my ignorance of how legislation works, but just because legislation runs for a set period of time, it doesn't mean that all of the restrictions must last for the whole of that time period, does it? I'm saying this because restrictions were slowly eased during the last massive lockdown, including some children returning to schools end of June, non-essential shops opening mid-June."

But the legislation was altered several times in that period. Also, back then, they only set the legislation every three weeks and simply renewed it again.

I'm sorry, the legislation has altered so many times but in the last year, I can't point to a change that was implemented before legislation expired.

I'm still confused because last time Boris stood up and said "We never ordered schools to close in law".

But bollocks is to be expected in a dictatorship.

LadyOfTheImprovisedBath · 06/01/2021 12:59

I don't really have any experince but the British Lung Foundation has information pages.

COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease)

Those kind of support pages are usually quite factual and none scaremongering but it's probably best to wait till they've confirmed a diagnosis and then ask qeustions of the medical team..

BogRollBOGOF · 06/01/2021 13:00

We have at least now got the precedent that full schooling can occur in rates of several hundred cases per 100,000, rather than quaking on our boots at a handful. Maybe the realities of teaching uninterested children via Zoom and being accountable may alter the Unions' priorities... We also already know that education standards were strongly affected and children are not super-spreaders any more than adults.

People keep sharing the 'it's not as bad as the war' memes but children's educations were not so badly interrupted in the war

My mum was 9 when the war started. She admits her education pretty much ended at that point. Her mother, my granny, was hopeless and could barely read herself. Her big brother taught her basic maths and English, but at was all.

My dad lost 2 years of education due to illness (he was shipped off to a TB hospital too far for any family to ever visit).

Both parents were terrible at spelling, grammar and maths of any kind. Neither could help me with my homework as a child.

We mess with kids' education at our peril.

LadyOfTheImprovisedBath · 06/01/2021 13:12

Just because many children were out of a school building until September last time doesn't mean it will happen for definite again. By the time restrictions were eased last summer it was practically the English summer holidays anyway, & schools hadn't worked out how to implement all those covid-secure guidelines, so there wasn't much option but to keep them off until September.

This time, we'll be heading into spring, we have a vaccine, schools got children back before & are better-prepared this time. There should be far less reason to keep schools shut for 9 months.

I agree - though will soon find out if Welsh schools go back after Jan 18 like they are currently expected to. After half term the GCSE assesments are supposed to start here so I think they will want at least the exam years back before then.

They don't have the data they had for last years GCSE and A-level courses . Last year Y11 had taken GCSE exams end of Y10 for many subjects and done coursework - current Y11 like DD" missed those exams and and coursework and classroom assesments have been disrupted. Last Year's Y13 had taken AS Level exams and completed mocks and course work - this year Y13 haven't. They are in a worse position for data so I think there planned assements will have to be priotised.

oh no...just seen this on bbc

. it looks like Clap for Carers may be making a come back - with a new name.

Neighbours applauding outside their homes and the banging of pots and pans was a familiar sight every Thursday during the first lockdown.

For 10 weeks millions of people took part in the weekly Clap for Carers.

Now, Annemarie Plas, who came up with the weekly ritual, has confirmed it will return under a new name Clap for Heroes this Thursday at 20:00 GMT.

"I hope it can lift the spirit, of all of us. Carers, teacher, homeschooling parents, those who shield and all who are pushing through this difficult time," she tweeted.

justasking111 · 06/01/2021 13:13

Family member ex factory worker laundries diagnosed with COPD he used to smoke, had flu and pleurisy last year. Somewhat overweight but walks a lot has an electric bike. Uses inhaler. Think your DB needs to address weight exercise within his limits . Family member fitter than he was before diagnosis ten years ago. COPD is a sliding scale deal with it now

Orangeblossom77777 · 06/01/2021 13:14

FIL has that, on home oxygen. emphysema as well, horrible disease.

Orangeblossom77777 · 06/01/2021 13:17

my experience is that the COPD caused weight loss as their metabolism increases it seems. steroids can cause eight gain however if used to treat. So, a mixed bag. exercise meant to be helpful in earlier stages.

LadyOfTheImprovisedBath · 06/01/2021 13:26

I caught some of Newsnight last night the were questioning lockdown as a tool.

Lockdowns works best in more middleclass areas for variety of reasons mostly housing density and more having ablity to work from home and access to sick pay- but the badly affected frequently poorer areas it has little to no effects - they were parts that infection was brewing in waiting for winter.

The presenter was trying to focus on vaccination and lockdowns but the independent sage person was saying we still need decent track and trace and testing.

Northern Ireland cancels GCSE and A-level exams I really hope Wales sticks to it's current plans though Wales was billed as canceled exams when really it's more controlled assesments or exams in class rooms with flexiblity about dates they need to be held.

Orangeblossom77777 · 06/01/2021 13:37

Surely that is missing the mood of the public (the clapping) most people want to get on with life.

Sonicthehedgehogg · 06/01/2021 13:41

I think last time it was more readily received as the whole situation was novel, and the idea of coming together to give appreciation and a sense of community was well intentioned.

I mean, I think it's trite virtue signalling but each to their own.

This time the novelty has thoroughly worn off. Bringing back the clap is the glitter they are trying to roll this shit in.

This is an 18 minute video, so quite long, but so fascinating and if all the points this very sensible sounding Consultant Pathologist makes are true then it’s equally so frustrating and quite frankly outrageous that the real and available science and data is being ignored.
In summary, Dr Clare Craig is saying that PCR tests are extremely unreliable and can easily create a false sense of an epidemic, that other types of testing actually showed that there was very little covid in Liverpool and that all deaths for most other causes and expected every year are hugely down. She also says that she is surprised with claims of asymptomatic spread and the lack of immunity, both of which seem to have received very little proper research. She compares immunity to SARS-Cov1 which has similar properties to covid 19 and so far they can prove at least 17 years of immunity as that’s how long since that virus was first detected.
The final point I drew from this interview is that up to 50% of people seem to be naturally immune already because of covid’s similar properties to a thousand other types of common cold.

Why is data (and common sense) like this being ignored?

She can gtf with that idea. Not doing it.

And I am afraid schools have forever lost my trust. Well, not forever but they'll have to work hard if they want it back. But they don't so they won't.

MoltenLasagne · 06/01/2021 13:47

Bringing back the clap is the glitter they are trying to roll this shit in.

I initially read this as the STD and I feel like clapping is going to be about as popular this time round.

Iheartmysmart · 06/01/2021 13:49

Please tell me we’re not doing the clapping again! Not that I ever did anyway. Idiots round here let bloody fireworks off as well. Poor dog has only just recovered from NYE. I don’t want to sedate the poor sod every Thursday!

@LivinLaVidaLoki My dad has fairly advanced COPD. He is now on oxygen pretty much continuously and needs a mobility scooter to get around. However he’s had his diagnosis for some 30 years and didn’t take the opportunity to lose weight and make other health changes in the early stages. He’s 85 now and apart from falling over his oxygen cylinder on a regular basis he has been better than we hoped.

wanderings · 06/01/2021 13:50

If the fucking clap happens, I shall be shouting "Boo for Boris" through a megaphone. Yes, really, I have one: bought for sports tournaments that didn't happen last summer.

rosettesforjill · 06/01/2021 13:50

I never did the clap but accidentally went out for a run at 8pm and the whole thing felt so cringey. It had gone mad with the accessories as well - one girl got her trombone out every week Confused

I think it will be a lot less appealing in winter when it's dark and rainy.

TooManyPlatesInMotion · 06/01/2021 13:58

Reading all the comments on this thread (and its previous incarnations) really has helped keep me reasonably sane recently.

Today, however, I am full of fear and anxiety. My greatest fear is not Covid, but rather that the government will never get us out of this series of destructive and ultimately futile lockdowns and that all the things that make life bearable let alone fun will remain out of reach. I'm scared and angry for my kids, for all of us tbh. Yet there are so many people IRL who don't think this current lockdown is severe enough and are busy berating other people for going out to walk in the sodding park, calling for us to inform on each other and just lick ourselves indoors.

The government appears to have tied itself in knots on many fronts, and I find it increasingly hard to see how they will change course, even with vaccines. In part perhaps this is because they tune in to the advice of only a very narrow group of medical experts. There is never sufficient discussion of the other side of the ledger (ie the immense cost - in all senses - of repeated and ineffective lockdowns). I wonder if this period will change our attitude towards risk forever.

Anyway, I don't voice my views to many people IRL as I get called a callous granny murdering loon. I'll be OK, just a rubbish day.

HeadSpin5 · 06/01/2021 13:59

I really really hope that when they do bring primary schools back they don’t just allow the same years as before. As a Y4 parent now, my Y3 didn’t set foot in school after March last year and it’ll be just the same again if they follow the R, 1 and 6 route only. We aren’t key workers but do wfh with jobs; that’s hard enough but it’s just mainly so unfair on D.C. I hate the idea of rotas and understand the difficulties they cause but I feel this time it’s only fair to allow some schooling for all rather than all/nothing for many

Seconded. I just watched it and found it very interesting. I wonder how many doctors and scientists have similar concerns but don't dare speak up.
