Please recommend a good documentary film/series for me

I rarely have any time to myself but do today, and fancy watching a good documentary.

Don’t mind what it’s about, just want to watch something really interesting and engaging. Really like Louis Theroux and Michael Moore but have seen all of those.

Have Sky, Netflix, Amazon and Apple+ & Disney+ (probably very un-mumsnetty to admit to having all of the subscription services isn’t it)

Can I have some recommendations please?

I have no interest in climbing whatsoever but found this fascinating, on Netflix

The Staircase on Netflix.

Wilma55 · 02/01/2021 16:23

Michael Palin, various travel series, BBC iplayer. Maybe a bit dated?

Monkeytapper · 02/01/2021 16:23

I usually watch crime documentaries but know it’s not everyone’s cup of tea so I won’t recommend any of them.

This was also interesting/feel good. Also on Netflix

@Monkeytapper - thanks, I’ll give it a go, sounds really interesting. No interest in climbing either but Touching the Void is also really good if you’re looking for something similar.

@YakkityYakYakYak

Seen Touching the Void, really enjoyed that.

YakkityYakYakYak · 02/01/2021 16:29

And @Monkeytapper I like crime documentaries too, so go for it if you have any you would recommend Smile

BBC iplayer have a great documentary series about the drug scene in West Yorkshire. It had me totally hooked as I remember a lot of the incidents being in the news at the time. Its one of those programmes that gets more shocking as it goes along. Also, the young journalist who presents it is excellent.

This on BBC Iplayer....about the girls who work on the legalised red light district in Leeds

My Octopus Teacher on Netflix

bruffin · 02/01/2021 16:35

Three Identical Strangers documentary about triplets adopted separately at birth who accidentally find each other as adults they then find out they were part of a cruel experiment. Fascinating stuff

Miranda15110 · 02/01/2021 16:35

Succession on Sky Atlantic is great. Two seasons available and another in production.

OvaHere · 02/01/2021 16:36

Three Identical Strangers on Netflix is quite astonishing. Don't want to give anything away but it could be classes as Louis Theroux-esqe territory.

Monkeytapper · 02/01/2021 16:38

Making a Murderer ( my favourite )
Amanda Knox Documentary -Netflix
American Murder- A family next door Netflix
The Staircase -Netflix
The Devil Next door -Netflix
The Trials of Oscar Pistorius -(iplayer)

BrowncoatWaffles · 02/01/2021 16:38

Over Christmas Sky showed McMillion$, a six part documentary about a wide-scale fraud of the McDonalds Monopoly game in the US. It's fascinating and was really well put together. Probably available on catchup?

Murinae · 02/01/2021 16:39

The Merthyr mermaid was ok though for binge watching I prefer a tv series to a documentary. I love This is Us or 5 Bedrooms or Lucifer

OvaHere · 02/01/2021 16:40

Don't F**k with Cats is also quite entertaining as is The Tiger King.

OvaHere · 02/01/2021 16:40

Should have said both Netflix.

MustBeThin · 02/01/2021 16:41

I've just finished the documentary Murder on Middle Beach which was really good. About a man trying to solve his mums murder. It was on sky crime so should be on catch up there's 4 episodes. There have been quite a few good series' on sky crime, I've probably watched them all. Blush

Also watched on Netflix

The Staircase
The keeper
Making a murderer
Confession Tapes

Monkeytapper · 02/01/2021 16:43

@MustBeThin

Can you recommend anymore on Sky Crime please? I’ve watched all you’ve mentioned on Netflix and Murder on Middle Beach so need something else to get stuck into.

Somewhereelsewhere · 02/01/2021 16:45

Yes,
3 identical strangers - totally gripping
My octopus teacher - gentle and intriguing look at life/relationship with octopus
American murder: a family next door. Made up of lots of real social media and at-the-time footage. Well made but just so depressing.

Abducted in plain sight. Not brilliant but interesting.

13th- look at American incarceration system- good but heavy

American factory- a look at declining business in the US and China’s role going forward. Got some awards. Linked to Obama’s production company I believe..

If I had one night i’d go for 3 identical strangers. Intriguing without making you overly depressed

WinniePig · 02/01/2021 16:46

If you like Touching the Void and Dawn Wall then you will love Free Solo.

Whymustyoubringinthebirds · 02/01/2021 16:46

I really enjoyed on pointe on disney+ following the School of American Ballet

Pinkybike · 02/01/2021 16:53

I've watched Abducted in plain sight twice now and still find it completely mind blowing how naive or stupid that poor girls parents wereShockShock
