Please recommend a good documentary film/series for me

I rarely have any time to myself but do today, and fancy watching a good documentary.

Don’t mind what it’s about, just want to watch something really interesting and engaging. Really like Louis Theroux and Michael Moore but have seen all of those.

Have Sky, Netflix, Amazon and Apple+ & Disney+ (probably very un-mumsnetty to admit to having all of the subscription services isn’t it)

Can I have some recommendations please?

I thought the recent documentary “The Ripper” was well done. It was about Peter Sutcliff’s murders but it focussed on exposing the shoddy detective work and the shit deal women had in the ‘70s rather than being too gratuitous.

Monkeytapper · 02/01/2021 16:58

@MustBeThin...Amazing! Thank you.....which one should I start with?

Namechangeme87 · 02/01/2021 16:59

Unsolved mysteries on Netflix ( 2 series ) each ep about an hour long and covers a separate event normally crime stuff

SpikySara · 02/01/2021 17:00

Bathtubs Over Broadway on Netflix. A lovely happy documentary about musical theatre.

PuppyMonkey · 02/01/2021 17:01

Succession isn't actually a documentary. Grin

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 02/01/2021 17:01

Surviving R Kelly was shocking but also extremely fascinating. I especially found it interesting how "celebrity" protects those who commit criminal acts.

Sarahandduck18 · 02/01/2021 17:01

7up is on britbox- you could get the free trial.

MustBeThin · 02/01/2021 17:04

@Monkeytapper no probs. Hmm really hard to choose but perhaps The Jinks, I watched it years ago.
The Smiley Case Killers and The DNA of Murder are slightly different to the rest because they are investigating different murders each episode rather than being about one person/murder for the entire series.

Monkeytapper · 02/01/2021 17:06

Seen The Jinx,....bonkers !

OvaHere · 02/01/2021 17:10

@WinniePig

If you like Touching the Void and Dawn Wall then you will love Free Solo.
Free Solo gave me palpitations despite knowing beforehand nothing bad happened.
Perihelion · 02/01/2021 17:32

Rising Phoenix on Netflix
United Skates, part of the Storyville series on BBC iPlayer

Wellthisismorethanabitgrim · 02/01/2021 17:42

I'll Be Gone In The Dark on Sky. Absolutely brilliant.

MustBeThin · 02/01/2021 17:43

@Monkeytapper I'd go with The Killing of Jessica Chambers or Who Killed Garrett if you haven't seen those

AngryPrincess · 02/01/2021 17:43

Civilisations on bbc iplayer, and The Romantics, was on bbc iplayer, don’t know now.

Pascha · 02/01/2021 17:44

Expedition but it's on UKTV play.

catlovingdoctor · 02/01/2021 17:45

There was a very interesting 3 part documentary on the plague of London on channel 5 a while ago. Might still be available.

JorisBonson · 02/01/2021 17:46

Three Identical Strangers on Netflix. My jaw was on the floor n

bitheby · 02/01/2021 17:49

Has anyone recommended The Vow? It's on Sky. I got totally hooked.

YakkityYakYakYak · 02/01/2021 18:05

Thanks everyone, so many good recommendations!

I’ve just started Don’t F*ck With Cats on Netflix, shocking but good watch so far. Will check the other suggestions out too Smile

That gave me bad dreams 😱😱
YakkityYakYakYak · 02/01/2021 18:07

@JorisBonson - I can see why. I’m only one episode in, but it’s pretty horrific. Just had to go and check the doors are locked 😂

I have zero interest in climbing but I was actually walking towards the tv with the remote control pointed to switch it off — I’d been in another room so hadn’t seen any of it — and realised half an hour later I was still standing there with the remote in mind hand, I was so gripped.

Lots of the Storyville documentaries (some available on BBC player) are brilliant. One I found incredibly touching and involving was one called The Baby and the Buddha, about a Buddhist monk disciple searching for the baby which will be the reincarnation of his dead master.

JacobReesMogadishu · 02/01/2021 18:17

Hunt for the unabomber

JacobReesMogadishu · 02/01/2021 18:20

Sorry, actually called Manhunt...on Netflix.
