Does anyone remember the new year AIBU broke Mumsnet?

Did that really happen? Did I imagine it??

*past the velvet ropes.

NoWordForFluffy · 01/01/2021 09:32

I think MNHQ were criticised by some, as they'd left one - very inexperienced - person modding on their own.

TheDrsDocMartens · 01/01/2021 09:35

I missed the evening but somehow ended up involved in the aftermath.

SWMNBN feels a very long time ago.

And I’d totally forgot the vanishing toaster.

I was part of discovery of blank posts too but didn’t master blank threads!

IDontLikeZombies · 01/01/2021 09:47

2013 was the one NYE I got to sleep on so I missed the whole thing. This is the first I've ever heard of it. This what Sleeping Beauty must have felt like Grin

Groovee · 01/01/2021 09:53

I remember it 😂 was just wild.

2anddone · 01/01/2021 10:00

I remember it it was definitely 2013 my first new years as a single parent and absolutely dreading sitting home alone while my dc slept. MN kept me thoroughly entertained that night, I remember the telling off the next day and a few posters who flounced never to be seen again...though probably just name changed!!

IAmAMalenkyBitPoogly · 01/01/2021 10:02

I think of that sorry episode every time I see a "Come and tell me your unpopular opinions" threads as they also always end up full of total fucking fuckwits trying to out edgelord each other.

Having said that, I was drinking at that time so New Years aren't as clear as they might be...

I vaguely remember the missing toaster, I also remember a fucking epic thread about someone buying some kind of new Warbies bread but can't remember why it was funny, maybe they were related?

KatherineJaneway · 01/01/2021 10:04

Thanks Lonely

MedusasBadHairDay · 01/01/2021 10:09

I took a break from MN after that night, the aftermath was awful. Lots of posters who admitted they weren't there but were happy making claims about things that were said in threads that had been deleted.

But my faith in MN was restored later that January as DD was born 10 weeks prem, and even though I wasn't active on MN at the time someone nominated us for a Woolly Hugs blanket.

NoWordForFluffy · 01/01/2021 10:27

Didn't Zombie ( Sad Gin ) go to 'rescue' somebody at a similar time? That caused a stir too.

BritishIdiot · 01/01/2021 10:35

I remember, it was very entertaining!

Sparklingbrook · 01/01/2021 10:47

This is what bothers me when people shout that 'MN is literally the only support OP has' when I suggest the poster should get RL help. That's a very dangerous place to be in as it can go offline with no notice at anytime, and indeed has done.

BearSoFair · 01/01/2021 10:52

I remember it because it was my first or second New Year on MN, definitely the first I'd been a bit more active rather than lurking and thinking 'oh my God what IS this place??'

Sparklingbrook · 01/01/2021 10:57

My 'oh my God what is this place' moment came when everyone was wetting themselves/spitting over their keyboard/waking the baby with laughter over Penis Beaker believing it was real. It went viral and MN got a LOT of new members off the back of it and the place changed (although this is often disputed-I believe it did).

SycamoreGap · 01/01/2021 11:01

I joined in 2009 (I think) and have no memory at all of this!

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 01/01/2021 11:37

I remember it but i think i missed most of it and just caught the aftermath

IAmAMalenkyBitPoogly · 01/01/2021 11:55

Penis beaker was fucking shit and an embarrassment. I hate it's seen as kind of representative of Mumsnet. (Awkwardly expressed, hopefully people understand what I mean!)

I think, especially for v long term MNers, MN has given so much genuinely useful and helpful advice and support not just on parenting but lots of things like cats and tabs on cling film etc. Things like the missing toaster thread (and booble plate and lots more) were genuinely funny, yet these days lots of people hear Mumsnet and thinks oh yeah penis beaker (or a certain demographic thinks oh stupid bitchy witches who should STFU and talk about nappies)

The kind of people who would have loved the original Happy NYE threads under discussion and taken it seriously, ironically.

IDontLikeZombies · 01/01/2021 12:13

Oh gosh, I'd forgotten about the RL rescue. That was a bit scary. I'd also forgotten about Zombie, she's not why I have my name, I thought she was pretty cool.

DecemberSun · 01/01/2021 12:18

I remember that. Didn't the deleted ones set up their own website?

Sparklingbrook · 01/01/2021 12:30

Does anyone remember when Pie and Bovril invaded MN and MN went back and did the same thing to them? In the end the owners of both sites had to tell everyone to pack it in. Grin

AuntieStella · 01/01/2021 12:40

Yes, I do and it was an invasion I thoroughly enjoyed - I particularly like the change of football managers being reworked into a Relationships thread, and the advice to stop DC invading the bedroom when you want to get frisky 'put something slippery on the outside handle so they can't grip it to turn it, maybe bovril?'
ssd · 01/01/2021 12:43

I dont remember the vanishing toaster, I missed the penis beaker nonsense, most things seem to by pass me, but I'll never forget biscuitsandbandages, and her dh and little crumbs. That was just heartbreaking.

Sparklingbrook · 01/01/2021 13:16

I don't remember many of the really sad things that happened to people. I think it's because I have a lot of topics hidden.

Forgot about that one. Didn't NM attempt it at one point too?
HeelsHandbagPerfumeCoffee · 01/01/2021 15:29

Pie and bovril were at least funny
N.M were all sparkly and offended by the profanities and lack of bling
