Please tell me buying ‘special’ cheese is a Christmas thing only!

I usually buy a block of cheddar weekly for use in lasagne, cheese on toast etc.

Christmas is the only time I buy Brie, Camembert, fruity cheese and Boursin.

Since Christmas Eve I’ve eaten these cheeses every day for tea with crackers, on toast and sometimes just a chunk on its own 😆

Fridge is now empty and I’m doing an online food shop. I’m SOOOO tempted to reorder a wheel of Brie and some Boursin but I know it will become a daily habit as I love it so much - my cholesterol and backside will suffer.

Someone tell me to step away from the cheese and that mostly people treat these as special occasion only cheeses ☺️

We buy nice cheese all the time, but extra special for Christmas.
You can never have enough Brie. Cheese is life

LoudBatPerson · 28/12/2020 19:48

I buy them for Christmas only (and sometimes other special occasions), solely as I have next to no self control when it comes to cheese. I if bought them weekly my arteries would be like the M25 at Friday night rush hour.

I often have a selection of nice cheese in my fridge.

There is a really nice cheese shop on my local high street. They know me by name....

You only live once. Life is too short to just eat cheddar most of the year.

HollyandIvyandallthingsYule · 28/12/2020 19:51

I buy one or two extra cheeses monthly, either to be used in specific dishes or to eat on their own with crackers if we fancy a little portion of an evening. Next shopping delivery I’ve ordered a taleggio and an aged manchego. We don’t do cheese/charcuterie boards unless it’s christmas or if we’re entertaining.

Cheddar is our go-to for sandwiches or toasties, once a week or so.

birdling · 28/12/2020 19:52

Cheese is fine. It's the crackers that you need to avoid 😊

HollyandIvyandallthingsYule · 28/12/2020 19:52

But yeah, I do try to ration it unless I’m low carbing in which case I’m okay to have a bit more. Cheese is moreish!

Daisy829 · 28/12/2020 19:53

Just for Christmas for me too as I like it too much. That and pate. Delish.

AuntieMarys · 28/12/2020 19:53

We eat lovely cheese all year. Why not?

MistletoeandGin · 28/12/2020 19:54

We have nice cheese fairly often. It’s one of life’s great pleasures.

We buy nice cheese all the time - good crackers too...Christmas we go extra special. Cheddar has its place but it really annoys me that the supermarkets - I'm looking at you Ocado! sell loads of varieties of cheddars and not much else!

AuntieMarys · 28/12/2020 19:54

We live near an award winning cheese shop too.....

ShrikeAttack · 28/12/2020 19:54

I usually have at least eight types of cheese in the fridge. Buy your cheese OP!

QuestionableMouse · 28/12/2020 19:55

Can't say anything. I'm currently eating cheese and Crackers.

Please tell me buying ‘special’ cheese is a Christmas thing only!
Nohomemadecandles · 28/12/2020 19:57

We usually have a couple in the fridge. Saturday night charcuterie & cheese habit!

Christmas - I've a fridge full still and I don't like some of them! It's like a compulsion with my family. Duplicates of some. Every year they bring excessive cheese...

DartmoorChef · 28/12/2020 19:58

We have nice cheeses all year round. Nothing beats a cheeseboard with a few glasses of wine. We love trying out new cheeses too. Sheep's cheese from waitrose was a hit this year.

Souperspooker · 28/12/2020 19:58

I buy a selection all year round. Probably do soup for supper once a week and an interesting cheese or two plus bread makes it more of a substantial meal I think.
It's not unhealthy as long as you don't eat masses of it
I tend to keep some boursin in the fridge for meal inspiration -try stuffing it in chicken and wrapping with ham/bacon/ Parma ham - v fancy! V easy and delicious. Or pasta sauce. Or melted on almost anything- yummy.
Same with halloumi ,lasts ages and can be main part of a meal.

mongoosebaby · 28/12/2020 19:58

Yeah, but even if it is just for Christmas, it is currently still Christmas? Twelfth night isn't until Jan 6th!!

ThatDamnKrampus · 28/12/2020 19:59

We only buy at Christmas, however I have some more Boursin in tomorrow's shop as dd1 (18) and dd2(5) sat in the kitchen and ate it all with crackers. I thought only I liked it. I will only buy it at Christmas still but by my reasoning Christmas is 12 days and we are only part way through that therefore it is still OK to buy nice "Christmas cheese".

wibblewombat · 28/12/2020 19:59

We have the Welsh Cheesemonger of the Year just up the road from us...

I do find I eat less of we buy from there than the industrial blocks we usually buy. Should support her more, particularly as she's opened a 2nd shop in the teeth of lockdown.

She posts hampers and is ace.

Eat the cheese that makes you happy.

CovidCakeConundrum · 28/12/2020 20:00

Umm... we normally have at least 4 or 5 cheeses in, more if we need then for a specific dish or are entertaining.

You definitely need to change cheese habits, basic block of cheddar is fine but bit sad if that's the only option!

cherrypie790 · 28/12/2020 20:01

We have nice cheese all year round!!

My favourite is Brie, closely followed by soft goats cheese with herbs. And a really good gutsy mature cheddar.

We buy Cathedral City for the bland everyday stuff that the DC like. I did discover a Red Leicester with Geeta's mango chutney in Aldi just before Christmas too......

MispyM · 28/12/2020 20:01

I wish I could restrict myself to Christmas! I just love cheese. Hard, soft, blue, red. Yesss....

Too much dairy and I unfortunately don't get along. Which is a bit of a blessing in disguise, seeing as it keeps me from eating blocks of it everyday...

JeannieTheZebra · 28/12/2020 20:02

Umm right now we have Brie, Camembert, halloumi, mozzarella, a veggie hard cheese, good cheddar, a local nettle and herb cheese, goats cheese, mascarpone and Philadelphia... at least. There might be more I’ve forgotten and we have most of these all year round. Life is too short for bad cheese.
