Please tell me buying ‘special’ cheese is a Christmas thing only!

I usually buy a block of cheddar weekly for use in lasagne, cheese on toast etc.

Christmas is the only time I buy Brie, Camembert, fruity cheese and Boursin.

Since Christmas Eve I’ve eaten these cheeses every day for tea with crackers, on toast and sometimes just a chunk on its own 😆

Fridge is now empty and I’m doing an online food shop. I’m SOOOO tempted to reorder a wheel of Brie and some Boursin but I know it will become a daily habit as I love it so much - my cholesterol and backside will suffer.

Someone tell me to step away from the cheese and that mostly people treat these as special occasion only cheeses ☺️

@Willfiasco I remember it well - I’m Danish and lived in Norway years ago. I’d love a slice or two right now!

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 28/12/2020 21:38

Only at Christmas 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

RaptorInaPorkPieHat · 28/12/2020 21:41

Normally (Jan - Mid Nov) the cheese in my fridge is reduced fat Cathedral City and Dairylea triangles.

Having eaten the first of my festive cheeses (a locally sourced vintage cheddar) I'm questioning my life choices. Luckily, I over-ordered so I have enough cheese (with really long best before dates) to last until easter. Xmas Grin

I eat tons of cheese and have low cholesterol... am a bit fat tho.

BarefootInTheMoonlitSnow · 28/12/2020 21:46

My DM’s GP told her to avoid cheese she hasn’t but has cut down I am attempting to eat as much cheese as I possibly can from now on just in case my GP someday springs that advice on me.

I suspect the main danger isn’t the cheese itself, or the crackers, possibly not even the wine to wash it all down, it’ll be the multitude of chutneys, jams, pastes & jellies that congregate in the fridge and end up as dips for crisps, bread, meats & fingers (near the end of a pot)

I currently have a v smelly, brandy soaked cheese thats in its wee unopened box, triple bagged and wrapped in clingfilm and I swear I can still smell it calling me from all the way downstairs in the fridge.

Grellbunt · 28/12/2020 21:46

For us cheese and crackers is a meal . Or cheese and fruit if I’m feeling too fat.

SWnewstart · 28/12/2020 21:47

How can you live with just cheddar? European countries have so many different delicious cheeses, there must be something you could have on more regular basis, not just at Christmas! In this house there's always Cathedral City cheddar, a pack of feta, block of parmesan, local brie, gruyere or manchego, a blue cheese and something soft and herby. We're always picking up new cheeses and supermarkets with deli counters should always let you taste before buying (which is how I know I didn't like cheese with truffles). Please try / buy more cheese - preferably local. You can cut back on other stuff Smile

DoubleHelix79 · 28/12/2020 21:47

We always have about four different types of cheese in the fridge - usually a nice cheddar, often some red Leicester, perhaps a good gruyere and and an aged gouda. I grew up at the border of France and Germany, where good cheese is seen as a basic human right.

Feelingpoorlysick · 28/12/2020 21:48

If you're worried about it becoming a habit, why not 'allow' it until new year and then start fresh. We have 'special Christmas' food from Christmas eve until New year's day.

MummyMcMumington · 28/12/2020 21:50

We always buy fancy cheese at Christmas, though we always have in a red cheese and a white cheese, a spread cheese, parmesan, halloumi, mozzarella and paneer, but I don’t see those as a treat?

EBathory · 28/12/2020 21:53

I have a cheese shelf in my fridge all year round, at Christmas it extends to nearly 2 shelves

redcandlelight · 28/12/2020 21:55

we rotate
sometimes we have gouda
sometimes (rarely as expensive here) cheddar
brie
soft cheeses
danish blue (goes fantastic with pasta)
comté

ZenNudist · 28/12/2020 21:58

I have tonnes of cheese in but I keep cheese on biscuits for a treat. I like blue Costello on water biscuits and eat that occaisionally year round. At Christmas I get more stilton and other blue cheeses in.

The rest if the year I keep aged gruyere for having with a salad. Mozzarella for pizzas and pasta al forno, parmesan for pasta, feta for salad, halloumi as we love it for wraps and halloumi fries. Plus tonnes of cornish cruncher type cheddar or also red fox red Leicester. I have lots of big standard mature cheddar for toasties, baked potatoes, cooking, kids sarnies etc.

My cheese drawer is always heaving!

miimblemomble · 28/12/2020 21:58

We live in France and could eat a different cheese every day of the year. Cheese is part of the meal, so we usually have several in the fridge.

The only one we don’t regularly have is cheddar! Even though I still love a good, sharp cheddar.

partyatthepalace · 28/12/2020 22:05

Why would you not eat cheese if you like it?!

You can still limit the amount but have nice stuff.

Life is short etc

LBOCS2 · 28/12/2020 22:09

We tend to have four varieties of cheese of fridge at a time - cheddar, Parmesan, something soft (Brie or Camembert) and something interesting (often a goats cheese or manchego for my cheese obsessed 8yo). Oh, and babybel and marmite cheese.

This is why we have a cheese drawer 🤷🏼‍♀️

kennycat · 28/12/2020 22:11

I bought Stilton Brie and Cheshire. Delicious but I’m
The only one who eats them so I’m going to have to freeze them to save me from my own gluttony!!

SaltyAF · 28/12/2020 22:13

Ooh but cheddar and spicy pickled onions ... my dad makes the best buy I also recommend the Hayward's hot & spicy ones.

Love51 · 28/12/2020 22:15

I'm more of a sugar person but I married a cheese person. We had cheese on toast for lunch today, it was camembert and bloody delicious. As a pp mentioned, probably no more calorific than the cheddar the kids had.
I'm disappointed I didn't buy any stilton. Mil usually provides a full wheel. That is a special extravagance for Christmas. I have the urge for broccoli and stilton soup (is broccoli going to be a delicacy now, or is it ok as we have a deal?)

Longdistance · 28/12/2020 22:17

We’ve always got different cheeses in our fridge. No need for Christmas. We always have Stilton, mozzarella, cheddar, Red Leicester, feta and halloumi in the fridge.
Only extra thing we have is goats cheese, Gorgonzola picante and black sticks blue.
We also have a cheese drawer Grin

burblish · 28/12/2020 22:20

I am practically made of cheese, all year round. I almost never have fewer than a dozen different cheeses in my fridge at any given time, and the number climbs at Christmas. If this is wrong, I don’t want to be right.

Willfiasco · 28/12/2020 22:22
@Willfiasco I remember it well - I’m Danish and lived in Norway years ago. I’d love a slice or two right now!
I got the brunost from Waitrose. I lived in Sweden and miss the cakes and yogurt in cartons!

msby · 28/12/2020 22:29

@QuestionableMouse

Can't say anything. I'm currently eating cheese and Crackers.
I spy five counties cheese! I couldn’t get any - I was so disappointed over Christmas, everyone else in the family had their top cheese choice!
mamaduckbone · 28/12/2020 22:32

We only buy fancy cheese at Christmas and for other special occasions - we always have cheddar and Parmesan in the fridge. If we bought Stilton regularly dh would be 25 stone and be on the road to a heart bypass.

EffOrf · 28/12/2020 22:46

I buy lots of different cheeses all year but don't like meat much so do eat cheese a lot.
