Please tell me buying ‘special’ cheese is a Christmas thing only!

I usually buy a block of cheddar weekly for use in lasagne, cheese on toast etc.

Christmas is the only time I buy Brie, Camembert, fruity cheese and Boursin.

Since Christmas Eve I’ve eaten these cheeses every day for tea with crackers, on toast and sometimes just a chunk on its own 😆

Fridge is now empty and I’m doing an online food shop. I’m SOOOO tempted to reorder a wheel of Brie and some Boursin but I know it will become a daily habit as I love it so much - my cholesterol and backside will suffer.

Someone tell me to step away from the cheese and that mostly people treat these as special occasion only cheeses ☺️

A cheese shop has just opened on the walk to school, can it be my local instead of a pub? 👀

VictoriasCousin · 28/12/2020 20:05

We usually have a block of cheddar, and at least one yummy one. I do eat cheese and crackers fairly regularly though, and yes my back side is rather large Blush

ExpensivelyDecorated · 28/12/2020 20:06

We have about several in the fridge at any given time. Cheddar, parmesan, a blue, a soft cheese (goat or Philadelphia type) and whatever else takes our fancy.

I have recently read an interesting theory on why cheese is not actually the devil for either cholesterol or weight gain....

In a book called This Book Could Save Your Life, which appears to be backed by proper scientific studies.

Favourite snack of all time Cheese and Crackers! Some nice Cheddar or even wait for it Dairylea! (Does that actually count as Adult Cheese or not)!

marmitepasta · 28/12/2020 20:15

I live in France with french dh. He eats a selection of cheese after every meal!

Pugliandreamer · 28/12/2020 20:16

We have a rotating stack of camembert year round. So a new one is bought and put in the bottom of the pile. Then the oldest is opened when it's at its ripest... Delicious.

Well that turned out well!!

You are really not helping my size 18 bottom guys!!

I've just discovered Black Crowdie cheese, it's a soft cheese coated in crushed peppercorns. Best thing I've ever tasted 😋

testingmitb · 28/12/2020 20:23

Couldn't live without cheese. Currently have 7 on the go as it's Christmas, but usually have at least two or three each week.
We try to eat meat free a good few night's a week and cheese is an excellent source of protein.

It's not the fat (nor the sugar) you see. As my mum still says. She is very slim so I suppose she may have a point. (or just lucky. Little bit of both, I suppose.)

Sparklfairy · 28/12/2020 20:24

@AuntieMarys

We live near an award winning cheese shop too.....
Argh so do I. Lived a few doors down from it for nearly 3 years and I darent go in as I'll buy EVERYTHING Grin

Raw Romano pepper slices dunked in melty camembert mmmmmmmm, in other cheese related news we're having a fondue on New Years Eve. So I think the cheese window is open till at least New Year.

Nowaynothappening · 28/12/2020 20:27

Today my DS asked for some ‘normal cheese’ so yeah, this is a thing Grin. We also only usually buy cheddar, occasionally mozzarella and halloumi. During Christmas we have about 10 different cheeses in.

DuckonaBike · 28/12/2020 20:31

Go for it OP. There are few pleasures remaining to us at present, but at least we can still eat cheese.

Besides, think of the cheese makers. If people only bought nice cheese at Christmas how would they make a living?

My bottom went from a size 20 to 14 on keto, I'm pretty much made of cheese at this point!
Dogsaresomucheasier · 28/12/2020 20:33

Cheddar, mozzarella, Parmesan and halloumi are year-round fridge staples.
Camembert to bake as a weekend lunch about once a month, blue cheese and crackers as a snack/treat periodically, usually when Masterchef is on the tellybox to make us peckish.

Elaborate cheeseboard with quince jelly, posh crackers, chutney and loads of different cheeses, that’s Christmas only.

ReceptacleForTheRespectable · 28/12/2020 20:33

Those are all everyday cheese in this house.

Cheese has a fairly long shelf life though - you can buy the nice ones and eat them slowly.

Positivevibesonlyplease · 28/12/2020 20:34

I buy Brie & a blue cheese every few months, but that’s it. It’s all yummy though, isn’t it?

2Kidsinatrenchcoat · 28/12/2020 20:35

We tend to have at least four varieties of cheese at any one point in time depending on what’s currently on offer!

PurBal · 28/12/2020 20:36

We buy nice cheese all the time. Normally have two or three. Everything from gouda, emmental, stilton, brie, parmesan, cheddar, as well as some more specialist local cheeses. Couldn't live without a bit of cheese.

newnamenancy · 28/12/2020 20:37

I have two boxes of cheese in the fridge. ALWAYS have lots of cheese. We currently have:

  • 2x halloumi
  • 3x mozzarella
  • 2x day to day cheddar
  • a black bomber
  • a fancy French
  • a gruyere
  • a Boursin
  • 2 x blue
  • half a goats cheese
  • 2x cream cheese
  • half a Parmesan
Grin
Itsokthanks · 28/12/2020 20:40

We buy more variety at Christmas but usually have a few choices in the fridge all year round. I've never really thought of them being a treat.

PlantPotPat · 28/12/2020 20:43

Well now I just want cheese and crackers.
