What are you doing with your Christmas food leftovers?

Turkey or ham sandwiches is probably a given.

Bubble and squeak from the spuds, sprouts and carrots ?

Fried Christmas pudding ?

Toasted stale Christmas cake with butter ?

Brie, camembert and stilton on toast (glass of port optional) ?

Or do just give everything to the dogs, cats and pigs ?

We didn't meal plan for today or tomorrow, because we knew we would have lots of lovely leftovers. Xmas Grin

Apart from vegetables; we cooked only enough that we knew we would eat.

JayeAshe · 26/12/2020 10:51

@Reiningitin

Pakistanis??😂
Panic stations I guess, Xmas Confused

I have 1 breast of turkey crown and some beef left so will be slicing up for my Boxing Day buffet. I always buy extra pigs in blankets, mini sausage rolls, mini steak and ale and chicken and ham pies, mini Kiev's and cooking up a bag of potato wedges. I managed to get some mini lettuce and baby plum tomatoes too for salad. I have coleslaw, dips and a huge cheeseboard and crackers too. I might make a few mini Yorkshire puddings in Mimi muffin trays as they are a favourite in our house. The few extra roast potatoes, stuffing balls and half s dozen pigs in blankets got polished off by adult sons in yesterday evening when they had second Xmas dinner.

Cheese & remains of smoked salmon for lunch, followed by trifle; cold Turkey, ham & jacket potatoes tonight. That will probably be it for the leftovers (had pigs in blankets for breakfast Grin). Might not even have enough Turkey left for a sandwich Shock.

stayathomer · 26/12/2020 10:58

Turkey curry and Turkey and ham vol au vents!

Pilcrow · 26/12/2020 11:03

I honestly don't get how Christmas cake can be 'stale' , if it's been made properly - ie fed with brandy and matured. It should keep for weeks. We haven't even cut into ours yet. And why would you toast something that has royal icing on it? Confused

Unless OP's thinking of panettone, which does get a bit dry after a while, being a yeasted dough. Never a problem I've had, though.

Butterbeeeen · 26/12/2020 11:06

Misses point but crying at Pakistanis Grin

PickAChew · 26/12/2020 11:12

@WildRosie

Splendid.

HollysBush, toasting old Christmas cake is an option to make it palatable again, assuming you have any left. Some folk have it with cheese.

I don't get the 'Just had Pakistanis' thing, unless I've missed something.

It doesn't need making palatable, though. It's a really moist cake that keeps for ages. I made mine in the middle of November!
RubyFakeLips · 26/12/2020 11:12

Using the leftovers is my favourite part!

We’re having a turkey lasagne with sage and onion bechamel, Turkey Tagine (uses cranberry sauce) and finally a leftover pie which uses everything up. DH a will do all of these as I did the food yesterday.

WildRosie · 26/12/2020 11:18

I admit I don't even like Christmas cake and I've never made one. I'm just reporting what my Dad used to do with store-bought, un-iced cakes in years past. It might have helped if he had put the lid back on the cake tin properly. Likewise, I'm not a panetone or stollen fan.

fried christmas pudding never heard of it! How do you eat it? With ice cream/custard?

  • Left over pudding or Christmas cake, either freeze or make into rum balls
  • Left over cheese platter- macaroni cheese/pasta bake/ cheesey turkey or ham bake
  • Left over turkey- make a curry or tagine
grannycake · 26/12/2020 11:30

Chicken, bacon, stuffing and cranberry club sandwiched for lunch. Cheeseboard and crackers teatime. Trifle and cake to finish. Bubble and squeak with left over roasties and parsnips tomorrow for lunch - add in any remaining stuffing and top with a fried egg and ham and cauli cheese or red cabbage for tea. Should be back to normal after that

Mintjulia · 26/12/2020 11:37

My ds is going to his dad's today and there is three quarters of a home made tiramisu left.

I'm going to need to cycle a LOT. Xmas Grin

missbipolar · 26/12/2020 11:39

MrsDThomas · 26/12/2020 11:40

isseys4xmastinselcats · 26/12/2020 12:06

one dinner plated for my son in law who coudnt come over to ours yesterday so he could have that when my daughter got back to her house , two ready made dinners for today for my sons went out with them on plates so they have a nice microwaved ready plated dinner today (they live on their own ), kept enough for us to have a roast dinner ourselves today thats it, i cooked just the right amount so there wouldnt be tons of leftovers

KEVINChristmas · 26/12/2020 12:11

Gonna do pesto pasta for lunch with leftover chicken. Potatoes and pigs in blankets have disappeared overnight Hmm

campocaro · 26/12/2020 12:57

I plated up the exact same main meal as I had yesterday with gravy and heated it up. Delicious.might have the same again to tomorrow.

dinglethedragon · 26/12/2020 13:02

ditto - "do I have breakfast then eat it later?" or ..... have it for brunch. I chose brunch.

Top tip. Yorkshire puddings when microwaved don't just heat up - they turn into lethal weapons, you could use than as cannon balls 🤣

Butternutsqoosh · 26/12/2020 13:04

I've just made bubble and squeak for tea, a turkey curry and some roast dinners for the freezer minus the veg so DH can have a roast on a Sunday when I go to work!

Purplecatshopaholic · 26/12/2020 13:08

Eating them, lol. Probably cold, straight from the fridge.

MotherWol · 26/12/2020 13:09

We had beef instead of turkey, so today’s dinner is going to be hash with the leftover veg and gravy. Tomorrow I’ll make stock and any leftover meat will go into a kind of ramen noodle soup. Got a fair bit of cheese so maybe a cheese and potato pie next week. There’s only 3 of us so we don’t have massive amounts of food in, the biggest challenge is whether we’ll run out of fresh vegetables - I don’t want to go to the supermarket until it’s absolutely necessary!

VioletCharlotte · 26/12/2020 13:59

DS2 has just eaten a massive second Christmas dinner made up of repeated leftovers.

DS2 had a pigs in blankets and gammon sandwich. I've also boxed up a whole load of bits for him to take home with him this afternoon, including one of the three boxes of biscuits we received and a tub of sweets!

I'll have the remaining nut roast and veg for dinner tonight. Lots of cheese and mince pies to enjoy over the week ahead. We've not got huge amounts leftover.

JillyCareful · 26/12/2020 14:05

Please watch what you give your dogs-dried fruit and onions can cause illness in some.

I had a veggie dish yesterday- butternut squash stuffed with bulgur wheat, cranberries and cashews. I’m turning leftover squash into soup, and the stuffing bits heated as a sort of risotto.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 26/12/2020 14:50

There was a little turkey left over which made sandwiches for some for lunch but that’s it. We only cooked enough for what we needed as hate waste.
