Oh bloody hell, I think the turkey's off!

Got the turkey this morning. It's quite cold here so am keeping it in boot of car. At lunchtime I put some icepacks in its cardboard box with it to be sure it was cold. A little while ago I went to checkwhat weight it was and when I opened the boot of the car I was met with an unpleasant smell.

Is there any explanation apart from it being off? Sad

Let it air and see if it smells in 15 mins.

Aquamarine1029 · 24/12/2020 21:41

I had a rancid turkey several years ago. It was stomach churning. Is the turkey in plastic wrapping?

inquietant · 24/12/2020 21:43

Oh nightmare Sad - but if not sure be cautious.

picklemewalnuts · 24/12/2020 21:44

It's almost certainly fine. It's just the enclosed space and lack of air. Unwrap it.

TwigTheWonderKid · 24/12/2020 21:49

It's a posh (and ruinously expensive) turkey so it's only loosely wrapped in a piece of paper in a cardboard box.

sorry, seems to be off :(
the plastic wrapped ones can smell 'farty' when first unwrapped due to a gas that's used when packaging to stop it going off.

NiceGerbil · 24/12/2020 21:53

Agree with PP, let it air for 15 mins then give it a sniff.

Meat can often Ming a bit when first unwrapped.

jessycake · 24/12/2020 21:54

Posh turkeys are very gamey , personally i'm not keen I had one once but its probably not off

Tronkmanton · 24/12/2020 21:55

It’ll be fine. Just give it some air.

triceratops12 · 24/12/2020 21:58

Air it out abs re-evaluate

Heartlantern2 · 24/12/2020 22:01

Is it normal to keep it in the boot of a car? Doesn’t meat go in the fridge or so posh turkeys require this?

I’ve never heard of someone keeping it in the car with I’ve packs! 😂🤣

Greysparkles · 24/12/2020 22:06

Also Confused at keeping it in the car boot!

RB68 · 24/12/2020 22:07

the temperature outside is around fridge temp at the moment - we joke about the second refridgeration resource being our lobby but I would keep meat in a fridge.

I would let it air but also be really careful with it and possibly just have dinner without it its not worth the risk if it still stinks after an airing

TiersOnMyPillow · 24/12/2020 22:09

Yes, air it.

dudsville · 24/12/2020 22:11

It's child enough here to keep it in the boot. By any chance has it got giblets inside it? I don't mean to be gross but it's a dead animal, the giblets (and the rest in time) are decaying, one hope's this is a slow process but if it has giblets remove them and see if that helps.

WhenSheWasBad · 24/12/2020 22:11

I agree, let it air and see if it smells in 15 minutes. Any chance you have an overly sensitive nose?

Best of luck.

boredinthouse · 24/12/2020 22:12

I know it's cold out but isn't there a risk the sun might have shone in your car and warmed it up more than a fridge would be?

profpoopsnagle · 24/12/2020 22:13

And look on the bright side, if you can smell it then you haven't got Covid.

Noflora · 24/12/2020 22:15

Brine it overnight, cover it in a strong salt solution. When you get it out and pat it dry tomorrow it will probably smell fine. And the brining will improve succulence

Itscoldouthere · 24/12/2020 22:17

I'm sure it will be fine, I usually buy a posh boxed one from a local farm, I usually do the Nigella brine thing and leave it outside covered in its watery brine for a day or 2 before cooking on Christmas morning.
I'd be very surprised if a boxed fresh turkey was off, much more chance of that happening with a plastic wrapped supermarket one.

Mrgrinch · 24/12/2020 22:18

I'm sorry but what possessed you to keep it in the boot of the car? Of course it was going to go off.

Itscoldouthere · 24/12/2020 22:19

This year I've brined my turkey as usual but I'm keeping my eye on it, as I'm currently in Canada and need to make sure it doesn't freeze outside 😂

Itscoldouthere · 24/12/2020 22:22

I really don't think it would go off after a few hours in a car, and OP said she put ice in with it, maybe in the summer but surely it's not that warm in the UK ?

SlatternIsMyMiddleName · 24/12/2020 22:24

Our Turkey is currently residing in the boot of the car - my DMs to be exact.

It’s supposed to reach -2 tonight - colder out there than in my fridge.
