Oh bloody hell, I think the turkey's off!

Got the turkey this morning. It's quite cold here so am keeping it in boot of car. At lunchtime I put some icepacks in its cardboard box with it to be sure it was cold. A little while ago I went to checkwhat weight it was and when I opened the boot of the car I was met with an unpleasant smell.

Is there any explanation apart from it being off? Sad

The Turkey is a VIP and should be in the VIP lounge ( fridge ) . The hoi polloi can rough it in the shed ,garage or the car ( not the boot ) .

We've had the same problem here today and the turkey was bought on Monday and has been kept in the fridge. It wasn't smelling to the extent that some people have described but wasn't quite right. I assumed it was something to do with the packaging so we cooked and ate itShock. I've since read loads of people complaining about off turkeys from sainsbury's and elsewhere on Facebook. So either there's a big batch of dodgy turkeys or something about how they package them is causing this smell......

MyCatShopsAtAldi · 25/12/2020 22:19

Packaging is definitely a factor. Ours was a boned and rolled crown from the butcher (we only needed a small one and it fits in the fridge easily - we have a small fridge too) and it was absolutely delicious - but I still panicked when I opened it and smelt that smell. Was reassured by sniffing the actual meat and it definitely was not off.

Our Yule log is currently in the porch and hunkered down next to red cabbage and par-boiled potatoes last night. I wouldn’t have done that with meat personally but it was a hard frost here so can understand others with stronger nerves than me might!

@ThatsMySantaHisBeardIsSoFluffy

Maybe she died from eating off turkey?! 😱
If it was off she'd probably only be starting with the poorly tum around now. Give her a couple of days before we bury her.
NoWordForFluffy · 25/12/2020 22:58

If it's really bad, it can hit hard and fast. Given she's not come back, I hope she hasn't shat her innards out!

NiceGerbil · 25/12/2020 23:02

OP not back?

She said she was going to give it a swerve didn't she?

Sorry everyone, I did reply yesterday but I think a combination of too much booze and my crappy old phone meant it didn't actually post.

We abandoned the turkey. It wasn't slimy etc but the inside just really smelled "wrong" The giblets were vacuum packed so it can't have been them. The ice packs were all still frozen so I'm certain that my car-fridge wasn't the problem.

Luckily, we also had a bit of beef in the freezer which we'd bought for DH's birthday tomorrow, so we had that instead. It was very nice but definitely added to the whole air of Christmas not being quite "right". But after a crappy 4 weeks of DS2 and DH being very ill with Covid I'm really not sweating the small stuff and with the year many people have had, I am just grateful we had something to eat.

This came up on my Facebook feed earlier, and I thought of you.

I'm glad you managed to salvage the meal.
