Oh bloody hell, I think the turkey's off!

Got the turkey this morning. It's quite cold here so am keeping it in boot of car. At lunchtime I put some icepacks in its cardboard box with it to be sure it was cold. A little while ago I went to checkwhat weight it was and when I opened the boot of the car I was met with an unpleasant smell.

Is there any explanation apart from it being off? Sad

It is nowhere near cold enough to be keeping salmonella sid in a car

Your fault not the retailer.

ShirleyPhallus · 24/12/2020 22:28

@Heartlantern2

Is it normal to keep it in the boot of a car? Doesn’t meat go in the fridge or so posh turkeys require this?

I’ve never heard of someone keeping it in the car with I’ve packs! 😂🤣

Yes, posh turkeys must be kept in car boots. Only Bentleys, or a Rolls at a push.

Keeping them in the fridge otherwise absorbs smells of things that common people keep in their fridge - jellied eels and that kind of thing.

museumum · 24/12/2020 22:32

The grass has been white with frost all day long here today. Definitely colder in the car than our fridge.

NiceGerbil · 24/12/2020 22:32

My guess is that people keep them in boot as too big for fridge.

But it's not been that cold, here anyway.

Having said that OP has only had it since this morning and packed ice so not long enough to go off really.

cherrypie790 · 24/12/2020 22:34

Don't cook it if it smells.

Not worth the risk. I'd rather go without than having food poisoning at this time of year..............

Dawnlassie · 24/12/2020 22:36

Where is it off to?

Crumbleweed · 24/12/2020 22:42

Out turkey 'Colin' , is currently sat in our garage. It's 2 degrees out there. Far colder than our fridge.

dottiedaisee · 24/12/2020 22:42

Our goose is out in the car tonight!! Didn’t want to risk the shed incase local fox or rats ended up having midnight feast!! It is definitely cold enough. I hope your Turkey is ok .X

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 24/12/2020 22:43

Until this year we’ve always had a fresh one from M&S, have always kept it from very early on the 23rd in a cold box outside, with ice packs. Always fine.

Might add that we’re in SW London and it’s been bloody cold here today! I’m sure a turkey would have been fine in the boot of my car.

81Byerley · 24/12/2020 22:46

This happened the first year I was married and my new husband's husband was a butcher. I ran round to him in a panic, and he came round and washed it, first, in plain water, then in a solution of Milton using a clean new dishcloth to clean it inside and out, and it was absolutely fine.

AmandaHoldensLips · 24/12/2020 22:48

Shit. That's not great.

It's cold tonight so put it out where it can air. If anything looks off colour then you're fucked.

Dead turkeys never smell great so don't panic if it looks ok. Anything weird looking and it's a bin job,

Other than that, shove it in the oven, cook the bejeezers out of it and you should be ok.

AmandaHoldensLips · 24/12/2020 22:49

Any inkling of green anywhere and dump it.

Otherwise cook it (like I did). Nobody died.

StanfordPines · 24/12/2020 22:49

It wouldn’t go off in that short amount of time. It depends on where you are but where I am it’s 3°. Given that a fridge is between 3 and 5 degrees it should be ok.

Also, what about game that is usually hung for a few days? That doesn’t go off so quickly.

catwithflowers · 24/12/2020 22:52

Not sure I would fancy eating anything washed in Milton to be honest 🙈😂

OrangeSamphire · 24/12/2020 22:52

The car won’t stay cold if it’s sunny. Doesn’t matter what the outside temp is.

Do you have a petrol station with a Little WAITROSE nearby? They might have a chicken or a pie you could stick in the oven instead.

IHaveBrilloHair · 24/12/2020 22:53

No way it would go off in that amount of time.
If it is off then it's the retailer at fault.

LunaLula83 · 24/12/2020 22:54

Er fridge ffs

ClaudiaWankleman · 24/12/2020 22:54

Posh turkeys can definitely smell a bit gamey, especially if it’s got innards or is has a bit of fat around the hind.

IHaveBrilloHair · 24/12/2020 22:55

Unless you're about to do a huge drip feed and tell us you live in Australia/the actual sun.

Christmaselfie · 24/12/2020 22:57

I'm sorry @81Byerley did you say your Husband's Husband was a butcher?

ShirleyPhallus · 24/12/2020 22:59

@81Byerley

Forget the turkey I want to hear more about you getting married to a man who already had a husband....?
MuthaFunka61 · 24/12/2020 22:59

Totally off topic but did you mean to say "new husband's husband" @81Byerley?

I'm both intrigued and baffled

MuthaFunka61 · 24/12/2020 23:00

😅 glad it's not just me.

Kitkatandcoffee · 24/12/2020 23:01

To check meat is off do not smell the carcass. Get a clean cloth. Rub it over the meat. Leave for a minute then smell the cloth. If meat is rancid smell transfers to the cloth. The blood can sometimes inpart a smell if not been bled out enough.

PiggyPokkyFool · 24/12/2020 23:05

Yes tell us more @81Byerley
I bow down to your knowledge of robo vacs but marrying a man who already had a husband is very confusing - tell all dear heartGrin
