Oh bloody hell, I think the turkey's off!

Got the turkey this morning. It's quite cold here so am keeping it in boot of car. At lunchtime I put some icepacks in its cardboard box with it to be sure it was cold. A little while ago I went to checkwhat weight it was and when I opened the boot of the car I was met with an unpleasant smell.

Is there any explanation apart from it being off? Sad

I can't stop laughing at husbands husband!!! I have had quite a few ports tho 😂

wonkylegs · 24/12/2020 23:05

We have left turkeys in the garage / car before but it will depend where you live as to whether or not that's ok.
Here in the NE my fridge is exactly 4 degrees however outside the warmest it's been all day is 2 degrees and that was at lunch time, it's currently 0.
It's been much warmer down by my parents though.
Air it out of the boot (it might have built up a bit trapped in the boot) and get somebody else to give it a sniff. I often think meat smells off, turns out I just don't like the smell of some raw meat especially lamb.

JohnMiddleNameRedactedSwanson · 24/12/2020 23:06

Does it have giblets? Remove them and see if they are the culprit.

Flamingolingo · 24/12/2020 23:13

I think turkey smells revolting anyway, so it might be ok. In the years when we have had turkey I usually end up stuffing it while holding my breath as much as possible. It really is one of the worst meats to handle raw imo

Also agog at the husband husband butcher brandishing his bottle of Milton Grin

Justajot · 24/12/2020 23:18

Isn't washing poultry with Milton basically what Americans do with their chicken that we object to? Maybe the husband's husband was American.

Usually keep it in car unless it's unseasonably warm as there's never enough room in the fridge. Ice packs haven't melted and it's not been above 4-5 degrees here today so about fridge temp.Too tired to worry about it tonight. Going to check again in morning.

Placemarking, not for the Turkey but for the husband’s husband who disinfects poultry

cyclingmad · 24/12/2020 23:28

Wow I wouldn't ever risk doing that its been cold in London but the sun was out most of the day and whilst working at my desk beer the window with the sun shining through it was nice and warm on my face. Really felt the difference when the sun went behind a cloud.

mineofuselessinformation · 24/12/2020 23:28

Hmm, I had one of these a few years ago - turkey crown bought from a supermarket.
I kept getting a 'whiff' when opening the fridge, but assumed it was the cheese.
On Christmas Day, I realised it wasn't.
We had the gammon instead, and Sainsbury's were presented with the offending article the following day as I wasn't putting it in my bin.....
I hope it works out for you.

Changi · 24/12/2020 23:31

he came round and washed it, first, in plain water, then in a solution of Milton

Chlorinated turkey!

5zeds · 24/12/2020 23:40

You don’t need to chlorinate it! I’d cover it in salt inside and out. Scrub it with the salt under a tap till it’s all rinsed off then dry it with kitchen roll and cook it through well. You can eat gamey pheasant, so I doubt it will kill you.

Viviennemary · 24/12/2020 23:48

Don't know why you didn't put it straight in the fridge. Meat shouldn't be kept in a car boot. Still it wasn't there very long. Who knows if it's off or not.

katy1213 · 24/12/2020 23:51

It won't go off in the car in December! Friend has one tied to the roof rack but I wouldn't trust the foxes round here.

PyongyangKipperbang · 24/12/2020 23:55

Poultry that is off stink to high heaven, to the point of you wanting to vomit, as soon as you unwrap it. So if it isnt in vacuum sealed wrapping as you get at the supermarket, then it isnt off.

If it IS vacuum sealed and you can smell it then it probably is off.

I often keep milk and meat in the car over Xmas when the fridge is full as its colder than the kitchen. Why wouldnt you?!

lyinginthegutterstaringatstars · 24/12/2020 23:57

Hope it's okay in the morning. I once bought posh chicken from the local butcher. It smelled like bleach so went straight into the bin 🤢

PyongyangKipperbang · 24/12/2020 23:59

I should add that I had a "high" chicken from Tesco a few years ago, it was utterly rank. The manager had to authorise the refund....he insisted on unwrapping it and the woman at Customer Services said he shouldnt...he did. She clearly had a better sense of smell than he did!

Upshot was that the CS lady got sent on an early break (due to the retching), I got a refund, a fresh chicken AND a beef fillet joint worth at least £20 and the place fucking STANK!

bellie710 · 24/12/2020 23:59

Turkey has a strange smell when you first unwrap it. It smells almost of chlorine. When you clean it and cook it usually it is all good.

IHaveBrilloHair · 25/12/2020 00:09

Im back for the husband/ Milton story.
My life is so boring.

81Byerley · 25/12/2020 00:52

@MuthaFunka61

Totally off topic but did you mean to say "new husband's husband" *@81Byerley*?

I'm both intrigued and baffled

Hahaha! No, I didn't, I meant to say Grandad!!
