Oh bloody hell, I think the turkey's off!

Got the turkey this morning. It's quite cold here so am keeping it in boot of car. At lunchtime I put some icepacks in its cardboard box with it to be sure it was cold. A little while ago I went to checkwhat weight it was and when I opened the boot of the car I was met with an unpleasant smell.

Is there any explanation apart from it being off? Sad

@Heartlantern2

Is it normal to keep it in the boot of a car? Doesn’t meat go in the fridge or so posh turkeys require this?

I’ve never heard of someone keeping it in the car with I’ve packs! 😂🤣

In normal years we haven't got a hope in hell of fitting our turkey into the fridge, especially given all the other Christmas stuff that needs to go in there. This year I've gone for a Crown as there are only three of us so I've finally managed to get that into the fridge.
Heathcliff27 · 25/12/2020 00:59

I've got two cheesecakes and a case of veuve clicquot in my shed, mind you i'm in Scotland and its fucking freezing 🥶

81Byerley · 25/12/2020 01:03

@katy1213

It won't go off in the car in December! Friend has one tied to the roof rack but I wouldn't trust the foxes round here.
Back again, sorry about the confusion I caused when I called my husband's Grandad his husband. Grandad supplied the turkey a few days before Christmas, and told me to hang it from the washing line (!!!!) but I didn't fancy the idea of that because of birds etc, so I put it in the pantry. This was 1970, I didn't have a fridge, but I didn't have heating either so I thought it would be OK. The solution of Milton he used was the same strength as we used for sterilising the baby's bottles, (and we didn't rinse them after sterilising), so I think it was safe! It certainly got rid of the off smell!
TheSilveryPussycat · 25/12/2020 01:08

If still in doubt try just washing with plain water and patting it dry. Then sniff it again. If you decide to cook it then make sure it's cooked through - do the thigh test. I think it will have remained chilled enough in the car.

ChristmasPerfectionist · 25/12/2020 01:10

@81Byerley he certainly sounds like an interesting man. Just picturing a turkey pegged to the line flapping happily in the breeze before it’s Milton bath.

GarlicSoup · 25/12/2020 01:12

@profpoopsnagle

And look on the bright side, if you can smell it then you haven't got Covid.

Oddbutnotodd · 25/12/2020 11:01

Hope the turkey is ok op. I definitely keep food but not poultry in the car boot during cold weather. I once had a M and S turkey that was off - luckily found out before Christmas as I was in Marks behind another customer returning her stinky bird a few days before Christmas. She had guests expected that day 20 miles from the store. I went home, realised the turkey I had was off so returned it. My husband then found another one in a local butcher’s.

Stormy373 · 25/12/2020 11:08

I really need to know the outcome or this!

Itstheprinciple · 25/12/2020 12:12

Off topic, but the instructions on Milton used to tell you how to wash salad leaves in the solution. I'm not sure if they still do, but they certainly did a few years ago. I think washing food in Milton used to be the done thing.

RedToothBrush · 25/12/2020 12:23

Are you playing turkey roulette today then OP?

CatholicKidston · 25/12/2020 12:30

I've got a butchers turkey stored in its box in the fridge and it didn't smell amazing when I lifted it out of the fridge this morning but you know, it is a dead bird. It'll be fine when it's cooked.

YukoandHiro · 25/12/2020 12:32

Need to know how this turned out.... have you binned it or pushed on?

I really need to know if the turkey was off! Unpacked mine... No smell.. Cooked and apart from smelling lovely, whilst cooking , no problems.. Never going to get a turkey again.. Dry bird with no taste whatsoever.. I say this every year!.. Bloody turkeys!

LongPauseNoAnswer · 25/12/2020 15:15

I’m overly invested in OPs turkey now that the husband’s husband mystery has been solved Grin

LovingLen · 25/12/2020 15:21

I had an off chicken from Tesco a couple of weeks back and it stank, no mistaking it was off, it went in the food bin, triple bagged in compostable food bags

Changi · 25/12/2020 15:32

I let the cat have a sniff. If he looks at me as if I have lost my mind, it goes in the bin.

Littleyell · 25/12/2020 15:43

@TwigTheWonderKid did you salvage the turkey?

itssquidstella · 25/12/2020 15:47

Our duck was off. Fuming as it was well within date, but managed to get a nice leg of lamb from a Turkish supermarket in Dalston (I love London at times like this!).

BiddyPop · 25/12/2020 15:48

DM had the same problem having kept the turkey in the utility room for 2 days because the fridge was full (and the spare fridge in utility is full of beer, which of course MUST be kept cold!!). And various DCs were in there doing laundry yesterday, including tumble drying. And leaving door to the overheated kitchen open.

Luckily, she also had a joint of beef so for the first time in 45 years (if not more), there is no turkey.

I'm just glad I wasn't there for the fireworks!

ThatsMySantaHisBeardIsSoFluffy · 25/12/2020 16:03

Maybe she died from eating off turkey?! 😱

MiddleClassMother · 25/12/2020 16:12

I'm thinking the same, surely she's eaten something by now?!

RumJerrySailorRum · 25/12/2020 17:29

Here in Yorkshire, during the festive period, food is regularly kept in cars, in the garage, firmly wrapped by the back door etc etc

Fridges just aren't big enough or as cold as outside!

Timbucktime · 25/12/2020 18:10

@PyongyangKipperbang

I should add that I had a "high" chicken from Tesco a few years ago, it was utterly rank. The manager had to authorise the refund....he insisted on unwrapping it and the woman at Customer Services said he shouldnt...he did. She clearly had a better sense of smell than he did!

Upshot was that the CS lady got sent on an early break (due to the retching), I got a refund, a fresh chicken AND a beef fillet joint worth at least £20 and the place fucking STANK!

Oh my God, that did make me laugh 😂😂
BrimfulOfBaba · 25/12/2020 20:38

@TwigTheWonderKid how was it?? I've been thinking about this more than I should have today!
