What's the difference between Tier 4 and a lockdown?

Is it not just the same thing really?

I’d understood that Tier 4 is effectively a local lockdown in the specified areas, as opposed to a national one.

LaPoesieEstDansLaRue · 23/12/2020 18:27

Yep, it's essentially the same thing. The government just likes to make things as complicated as possible, and everyone as confused as possible, by randomly inventing utterly pointless new terminology every so often.

MariaTia · 23/12/2020 18:36

LaPoesieEstDansLaRue yes perhaps they're trying to trick us into thinking we haven't got another lockdown when we have!

Takeaway.

Jinglingmod · 23/12/2020 18:39

Takeaway was allowed in both national lockdowns, wasn't it?

I can't think of any difference.

LumpySpacedPrincess · 23/12/2020 18:39

Takeaways available in first lockdown. Schools are open, that's the difference.

Jinglingmod · 23/12/2020 18:39

Tier 3 is same as lockdown except a few extra shops are allowed to be open.

wanderings · 23/12/2020 18:41

The government are trying to pretend it’s not a lockdown. That, and they have a fetish for playing with words to confuse the peasants (what they think we are). They just don’t want to be remembered as the government that locked down over Christmas. They think we don’t notice, because they think we are total idiots who hang on their every word.

Sn0tnose · 23/12/2020 18:42

Tier 4 here. The only difference I can see from lockdown is that more non essential shops (Next etc) are doing Click & Collect where they were completely shut before. I don’t have children so not really sure what is happening with schools.

Letseatgrandma · 23/12/2020 18:44

Schools were open in the November lockdown and Tier 4. I would imagine Tier 4 will have very little impact on reducing covid numbers.

The only thing that does seem to make a difference is closing schools.

Clockstop · 23/12/2020 18:47

I'm in tier 4, it's the same as the November lockdown and dull AF Xmas Grin

CeeceeBloomingdale · 23/12/2020 18:49

It's a different name for the same thing. It sounds less harsh so people are more likely to comply Xmas Hmm

Anotherdayanother2 · 23/12/2020 18:56

Outdoor sports allowed in tier 4 when they weren't in lockdown.

More shops considered 'esssential' are open. Lush near St Paul's was open on Monday when I was in central London.

BillysMyBunny · 23/12/2020 18:59

I think the main difference is it’s local. Tier 4 doesn’t differ much from England’s November lockdown (although less restrictive than the March lockdown when schools were closed), however it is probably less confusing to divide the country by 4 tiers, with Tier 4 being the strictest measures and broadly equivalent to the last national lockdown, than to have 3 tiers plus a ‘lockdown’ category.

Hercwasonasnowball · 23/12/2020 18:59

Schools ffs.

FizzyPink · 23/12/2020 19:00

DP is allowed to work outside in tier 4 as long as he only teaches one person at a time - tennis coach
He hasn’t been allowed to work during either of the previous lockdowns

Chloemol · 23/12/2020 19:06

As someone in T4 nothing, it’s exactly the same as the November lockdown with a stay at home order and no travelling into other tiers unless for a few essential reasons

AldiAisleofCrap · 23/12/2020 19:30

Places of worship are open in tier four .

Staffy1 · 23/12/2020 19:32

There is one difference I can think of. Places of worship are allowed to remain open in tier 4 whereas in lockdown they weren't.

Staffy1 · 23/12/2020 19:33

As I now see the PP has already said.

CarolEffingBaskin · 23/12/2020 19:34

We're allowed to go and pray...

Crunchymum · 23/12/2020 19:36

What's the difference between Tier 4 and a lockdown?

Is it just me who expected a punchline? Grin

Education is the non jokey answer.

GirlCrush · 23/12/2020 19:36

What will tier 5 look like?

I bet they have one organised ready.

Agoodbriskwalk · 23/12/2020 19:42

Maybe schools, though they haven't decided that yet.

If not schools, then there will be no difference between Tier 4 and 3 in terms of infection rates.

Moonandstars25 · 23/12/2020 19:47

Not much- in fact for me this tier 4 is worse than lockdown as at least in the 2nd lockdown I could go to the country park a few miles from my home for a walk. Now technically I can’t as I shouldn’t be leaving my tier. I feel so much worse in this tier 4 than the November lockdown.
