@Iheartmysmart

I don’t get the private gardens thing. I can’t meet my parents in their garden where there will only be the three of us but I can meet them at the local town garden which is always absolutely packed. Makes no sense. We aren’t a huggy family and are unlikely to indulge in affectionate displays.

I’ve emailed my MP several times but he’s a twat and just replies along the lines of “it’s a pandemic, do you want us all to die”. Hmm not everyone but I could give you a pretty long list.

😂😂😂 at the long list

I think the private garden crap is meant to be that you have to walk through the house and might gasp use the loo.

amicissimma · 26/12/2020 17:23

@AcornAutumn, it sounds as if your 'private/public' garden could open.

From the gov.uk website: Guidance Tier 4:

"Public outdoor places include:
parks, beaches, countryside accessible to the public, forests
public gardens (whether or not you pay to enter them)
allotments
the grounds of a heritage site
outdoor sports courts and facilities
playgrounds"

"indoor attractions at venues such as botanical gardens, heritage homes and landmarks must also close, though outdoor grounds of these premises can stay open"

amicissimma · 26/12/2020 17:24

Oh, crossed post. It seems that the building has to be closed, so if you have to enter it to get to the garden, that could be the problem.

Iheartmysmart · 26/12/2020 17:26

Possibly Acorn, still seems a bit daft though as most people I know have a side gate so you don’t need to go through the house. Parents even have an outside loo....

Perhaps I should suggest to Boris he amends the rule to allow side access and a Tena lady!

I’ve just looked at emails I didn’t see over Xmas

There’s one from them that actually says “there’s been a big reaction to our closing, it’s because of higher cases and protecting staff”.

Well that’s the short version.

So now I’m wondering if that’s real, if the staff are furloughed etc.

The original email said “due to Tier 4, we will be closing from 23rd” and I thought, surely if Tier 4 was an issue you would have closed on the 19th?

At one point side access was mentioned

I wonder if they thought a blanket ban would be better and attract fewer discrimination accusations.

AcornAutumn · 26/12/2020 17:31

To be clear, for any lurkers, I don’t see any defence for any of these restrictions at all.

Jourdain11 · 26/12/2020 17:35

Hiya!

I've lost my mind... started a thread about the logistical issues of closing primary schools in the Corona Den. I'll be eaten alive and I have only myself to blame, lol.

Iheartmysmart · 26/12/2020 17:42

Bonkers it is ... in fact today should be renamed Bonkers Day and it should be customary from now on to do the most nonsensical thing you can think of on 26 December in the name of St Boris.

DrDiva · 26/12/2020 17:48

@Iheartmysmart your long list made me laugh! I could add a few names...

@Jourdain11 we hope to see you back in one piece! (Both DH and I are teachers who would have to continue working, as not in mainstream education. Logistics would be hell if schools were to close.)

Iheartmysmart · 26/12/2020 17:55

Oh @Jourdain11 what were you thinking. You know there is very little common sense on the other side!

Perhaps we could have “ADs and their very long list” as the next thread title.

Littlebelina · 26/12/2020 17:58

@AcornAutumn yes fairly sure the schools thing was a drafting error. First saw the zoo things on a twitter thread about changes to the legislation (wrt schools, zoos and other minor updates), it was Adam somebody (a human rights lawyer) feed. Then our local zoo posted about it on fb.

@Jourdain11 so far your thread is quite civil although early days.

Jourdain11 · 26/12/2020 17:59

Hmmm, surprisingly rational and civilised so far!

If it has to happen, it's gotta be a fixed period. Two weeks, done. No extension, no bullshitting with rubbish data and "alternative facts". Still not ideal, but less awful than the prospect of closures that just go on and on, with no plan and no end-point..

SirSamuelVimes · 26/12/2020 18:08

Perhaps we could have “ADs and their very long list” as the next thread title.

Seconded!

Just popping in quickly as was meant to be having a two day Mumsnet break. Great day yesterday with my parents but I does bring the idiocy of the rules into focus when yesterday I could spend all day with my parents in their house but today I can't get within two metres of them (apparently!) Am wondering if there's going to be a bit more disobedience as a result of having had a day together, the world not ending, and people thinking, well, it's fine then isn't it.

amicissimma · 26/12/2020 18:18

Thanks, Jourdain11. I had a peek and got sucked in.

I don't even have school-aged children. What am I doing?

justasking111 · 26/12/2020 18:36

Well no new news on schools assumed secondaries will be online for first week, primaries cracking on. Universities cracking on. I suspect that will all be binned if deemed necessary. DIL is convinced in Wales at least her primary school will only be open to key workers for the month of January with online teaching. She is planning to that end. The DofE meeting on 24th was postponed to that end, they are watching the figures now and will decide down the road.

justasking111 · 26/12/2020 18:38

I popped my head into a supermarket thread re abandoned trollies, suggesting as my friend on customer service at Asda for 20 years has said that trollies are abandoned because people suddenly feel too unwell, panic attack add in masks to that you will get more trollies. Well that went down badly, they are selfish and should stay out when supermarkets are busy. Do not think they understand how a panic attack works.

DH has comandeered the old TV as a monitor! The remote control disappeared about May 2019 and after a couple of months of coping with the most basic functions on the TV, we gave up and upgraded (the TV was aging a bit and falling out of date so this brought it forwards compared to our intended plan) It was a relief to finally watch The Handmaid's Tale with subtitles on Grin

The remote finally turned up at the start of lockdown. The sofa is usually the first point of hunting, but on this occasion, it had taken an unusual route deep into the framework of the sofa. It's quite good that it is being useful again! He was struggling with trying to read engineering plans that should be on A0 paper, so the TV is quite a good proportion. When he gets back to the office, he'll be requesting an upgrade...

Blobby10 · 26/12/2020 20:03

Had a lovely couple of days here, I’m sure breaking all sorts of Roolz, Now playing board games with the Les Mis 25th anniversary concert playing on TV in the background 😁😁it’s very horrid of me but I’ve thoroughly enjoyed having a justifiable excuse to not see any family other than my children and OH 😳😳

Jourdain11 · 26/12/2020 20:39

Ooooh, board games! I'm pretty sure that they are on the prohibited list...

GarlandaChynoweth · 26/12/2020 20:41

I think the prospect of long term school closures is making me slightly unwell here. I've not recovered from last time yet...DS1 and DS2 did not set foot inside school from March to September (although about 75% of DS1's class magically got key worker/other random places). Both struggled badly at home from June onwards and now I have DD in reception to contend with as well. I simply don't think I can go through it again...could just about cope with January or even to half term at a push but not the endless shifting goalposts affair of the summer. We had pretty much no covid in my area from June onwards either, just to emphasise how ridiculous it was that they were out of school for nearly six months.

I’m aware I’m unusual in that I’m not pressured to see anyone I dislike

But not seeing the people I do like is very sad.

There’s been a few threads I clicked on and then didn’t read as even the description of the family gave me a headache.

This Christmas I thought - from accidental comments made by mother and cousin - that there may be a Relative About Whom No one Speaks.

But I don’t really care so I didn’t ask any questions 😂

I've started getting so anxious I struggle to swallow when an announcement is looming - and it's because of the school thing. I got mine back into school on DD2's mental health declining so much - but only because I kept on every single week asking for some sources of support for her if she wasn't allowed back in school and wore the head down basically - the Head has never spoken to me since - even during governor meetings and never even said a word when I resigned from the GB in September.

I don't trust the fuckers to re-open the schools if they close them again - the loudmouth teachers and their unions will see to that. It'll be another few weeks... review in 3 weeks... then musical r rates.

Thankfully when school heard me lose my temper with DH when I forgot to hang up the phone properly (no violence - just me shouting at him for sitting in the corner like a judgemental wrath goblin and offering no support) they logged it - so I'll be a safeguarding/parental mental health risk and the kids should get offered provision in-school. And how shocking is that that I'm grateful for it? (I did explain the circumstances to the school receptionist and ask that it was added to the safeguarding log along with the incident).

GarlandaChynoweth · 26/12/2020 20:58

I wonder if one of you lovely lot could help me out as I'm feeling pretty ignorant. The point of lockdowns, restrictions etc is to protect the NHS, we're told (not, as some think, to stop anyone catching covid, ever). I'm sceptical about how much protection it needs in my area as DS2 was in and out of A&E with a fractured collarbone within an hour last week. Despite five layers of warning covid messaging getting through to 111 and then the doctor I spoke to warning me how busy A&E would be 'because covid'.

Like so many of you, I fear that the 'cure' is worse than covid itself, my DC have had their childhoods restricted in so many ways for nearly a year now for a virus that is likely to be milder than many illnesses they catch as a matter of course. But what really is the alternative if the NHS is not to be overwhelmed? Not being dementory, just seeking to be better educated when I'm moaning about how crap all these bloody restrictions are.
