Flooding here, I tried to get to the gym but I only have a small car and didn't want to drive through water, it's mostly cross country though the main road was flooded too, a number of roads seem to be bad, so I don't feel too wimpy for giving up quickly. Tier 4 is creeping closer to us too but not quite there yet, so at least the gym will still be open after Christmas.

@Reedwarbler

Has anyone else got terrible rain? It is almost completely dark here too. Went to collect my turkey this morning and had to queue for an hour and a half! (Very popular butcher). Time passed quickly as we were all chatting in the queue, and agreed it was the most chatting outside our families we'd done in ages, and what a pleasant change it made. I think I've said it here before, but I remember the days of convalescence after an illness. I was a really sickly kid (no MMR then) and you always had a few days at home when you were recovered, eating well, resting, no stress, early nights etc. It seems to me that should now be recommended after having covid. I do wonder how many post viral syndromes occur because people these days are forced back into work/school too soon and before their bodies are ready. There seems to such pressure to not have any school or work absences at all.
I do think people forget about convalescing, I remember having proper flu back in 1975 I think, and my Mum wouldn’t let me go back to school immediately but made me have another week off going out for short dog walks and eating sensibly and having early nights. I remember being worried someone would see me but she insisted. My very fit bil who is 60 has just had COVID, unwell a bit for a few days, as soon as he felt better he went out running again and then was ill again and has consolidation on his lungs. The GP told him absolutely no exercise bar gentle walking should be done for at least a fortnight after recovering and preferably leave it a month. Personally I fancy a month by the sea like the Victorians did lying on a chaise langue and eating jelly and drinking sherry or a nice glass of Madeira.
DrDiva · 23/12/2020 16:55

I am really down today. To the point where
My lovely 8yo DS came and gave me a hug and said “I don’t like seeing you sad, Mum, are you ok?” At which point I gave myself a stern talking to and we went for a nice bike ride and saw the most amazing rainbow.

But why am I overreacting and dramatic when I talk about his future (and present) being ruined bit by relentless bit, but people talking about COVID are allowed to say whatever they want and it’s not considered ever OTT?

Deep breath. I have a shop arriving tonight and there is only one missing item. Silver lining or something like that.

@Plibber I’m sorry to hear about your hot water absence. Really bad timing Sad

rosettesforjill · 23/12/2020 16:56

I've spent all of today getting stuff ready for Christmas dinner. What I have cooked will probably serve 10 - we are two (greedy) adults, one picky six year old and a 19 month old. Leftovers for days 😬

Sounds brilliant to me Xmas Grin. We're going to my mum and dad's and she doesn't really get the whole "feasting" thing. Found out a couple of days ago she was going to do from - frozen roast potatoes! At Christmas! Pearls were clutched, I tell you. So I'm going to do about a million proper roasties of Xmas Eve to take over and reheat. She's funny about food, not a competitive undereater or anything, just quite utilitarian. Also quite frugal as a result of being raised in rationing. So having way too much food piled on the plate rubs her up the wrong way!
TheOrchidKiller · 23/12/2020 18:11

DD walked past the TV when Hancock was on, paused to give him both middle fingers, & walked off to work. I have raised her well.

If I don't pop on here in the next few days, then I'm wishing everyone as nice a Christmas as possible now. It's hard to know what to say given the situation. But peace & love to everyone.

TheOrchidKiller · 23/12/2020 18:16

I have the opposite problem - DM & MIL seem to make up for a childhood of rationing & austerity by over-catering. Although MIL has gone funny over roast potatoes in the last few years, & we now only get one each. Shock As it's just us this year I will be doing too many roasties, to make up for last year's frankly bizarre Christmas lunch at theirs.

Iheartmysmart · 23/12/2020 18:23

One roast potato! That’s just beyond awful Shock

I’m not sure if I should be worried but DS has just raided my wardrobe for something to dress up in at work tomorrow and apparently I’ve got some stuff that’s perfect for being one of the seven dwarves.

rosettesforjill · 23/12/2020 18:29

One roast potato?! Heartbreaking Sad

SirSamuelVimes · 23/12/2020 18:33

Once, many years ago, pre kids, DH and I went to his parents for Xmas. As did all three of his brothers and their other halves, plus a couple of extras. They did NO ROAST POTATOES AT ALL. The day lives in infamy.

Iheartmysmart · 23/12/2020 18:39

No roast potatoes! Is that even legal? Hopefully you flounced out and haven’t spoken to them since Wink

LivinLaVidaLoki · 23/12/2020 18:45

Our hospital Trust did their weekly update today. The hospital is getting busier. What I find shocking though is that on the video that was shared from the trust, anyone asking how many patients caught it I hospital are deleted. The only ones left to stand are the fawning "god bless you angels" type posts.
The local rag reported on it and anyone questioning nosocomial infection, including a woman who's mum caught it in there are receiving so much abuse.

This deification and worship at the altar of the NHS makes me uncomfortable. The weirdest thing is, I can't even put my finger on why.

JamSarnie · 23/12/2020 18:47

Just to make you all salivate we cooked the turkey today and had so many roast potatoes there are some in the fridge for nibbling later.

We deliberately bought a massive turkey so we can have a roast dinner for the next few days so even more roast potatoes tomorrow Grin

Pleasedontdothat · 23/12/2020 18:48

So far tier 4 seems to have had the effect of turning loads of law-abiding people into law-breakers. Virtually everyone I know has been (reluctantly at times) following the rules since the first lockdown. But this latest escalation appears to be a step too far .. no one’s being reckless but several friends have told me they’re going to visit family members over the next few days. There’s just as much traffic on the roads and I think that lockdown fatigue has well and truly set in.

Did any of you see the story about 4 squad cars being sent to a village in Nottinghamshire to break up an outdoor carol service? The choir was abiding by the regulations but apparently operating within the law is no longer enough ... the police ordered them to stop as they’d had a complaint from a member of the public who felt ‘worried and unsafe’ Shock

Pleasedontdothat · 23/12/2020 18:51

Oh, and my uncle has been in hospital since May .. having regular COVID tests ... today he tested positive.. he’s not been anywhere so definitely nosocomial ... he’s not ill (asymptomatic) but it means my aunt can’t visit him at all over Christmas

Oh, I wondered why there wasn’t more interest in nosocomial infection.

I guess that answers my question.

There’s more health tyranny coming soon, I’m sure.

I’m glad to hear that Tier 4 is causing people to break rules. I really thought people had just hit the point of accepting everything.

Pleased to say one of the elderly neighbours will now not be alone. A family member has decided to risk the law and just have her there for Xmas.

Iheartmysmart · 23/12/2020 19:07

We seem to be getting a large increase in positive tests but as yet that’s not being reflected in hospital admissions. Still 30 beds out of 400 with covid patients. That’s not stopping many of the lockdown zealots baying for Tier 4 restrictions though. When I made the comment that if they were that concerned then there was nothing preventing individuals from behaving as if they are in Tier 4 I got called a covid denier...again!

This attitude really annoys me. Why are we always painted as covid denying anti vax conspiracy theorists? Just because we want an open and honest discussion.

I often think about posting a thread "over there" asking about it (cos let's face it MN would move it there anyway), but I'm almost scared of the responses I'll get. How pathetic is that?

TheOrchidKiller · 23/12/2020 19:16

@SirSamuelVimes

I thought my one potato per person was bad, but that is tragic.

Also, the same Christmas MIL did not do custard or brandy sauce with the pudding. It was cream or naked pudding. I hate cream. I don't think it was deliberate at all, just...odd. So last year I took every Christmas pudding accompaniment I could. I was allowed to have my brandy sauce but not allowed to have it on the table. There were a few other strange incidents that I shan't go into because they were so odd as to be identifying. DH phoned MIL on Boxing Day to check she was ok because of how she'd behaved & she denied it all.

At least we don't have to deal with that this year. Grin

the police ordered them to stop as they’d had a complaint from a member of the public who felt ‘worried and unsafe'
I've been "worried" & felt "unsafe" plenty of times in my life but only ever phoned the police once (for kids riding motorbikes on a footpath & almost knocking people over)

Every time I mention it, or post links to NHS data, I’m ignored. They want their drama.

Still find it interesting that one poster asked how many pandemics my dad worked through and when I listed them, never came back. I think some people really think there’s never been a pandemic before.

Iheartmysmart · 23/12/2020 19:21

@LivinLaVidaLoki It really annoys me too. It seems that if you agree with the Government and take the headlines from most MSM at face value you can make whatever ridiculous statement you like and it isn’t questioned. If you dare say perhaps that isn’t quite correct you have to provide your sources or you are a denier!

It’s all quite bonkers. Not that long ago I’m sure the majority were of the “prove it or it didn’t happen” viewpoint now that’s turned on its head.

Taswama · 23/12/2020 19:22

No pigs in blankets at PIL last year!
You can never have too many roasties in my opinion!

Rain all day and swans on the footpath in the city centre here.

TheOrchidKiller · 23/12/2020 19:29

Roast swan for lunch, Taswama? That may result in getting your collar felt. Unless you are HM, of course!
