Oh no @Plibber that's rubbish. I am sorry. How are you going to keep clean - filling the bath with water from the kettle? I have had to do that before and it's awful.
I have a couple of friends who are unwell with covid right now, one of them is feeling better thankfully but has been warned by another one about not doing too much as she did that and exhausted herself. They are both decent kind women and are not lecturing other people about having the illness, they are just accepting of the fact that they are unlucky to have it. I am so annoyed that these threads are occasionally accused of being conspiracy theorists or covid deniers, I am not now nor have ever been one of those things and I don't believe the majority of us are!

LivinLaVidaLoki · 23/12/2020 14:45

Bbc news just said "the new variant can spread up to 50 to 60 percent quicker/easier"

up to 50 to 60 percent.....I thought it was 70?

Littlebelina · 23/12/2020 14:47

@LivinLaVidaLoki

Also what the fuck is wrong with people on here? Soon as the pressers are announced, thread after thread of "must be a lockdown".

They stated at the last one they'd have more information about the new variant in amatter of days so maybe that? And tier 4 expansion?

I was assuming that, esp since it's wanksocks not bojo clown shoes. Assuming if it was national lockdown it would be Boris (unless he is hiding in a fridge again)

Wasn't there a character like that in Bleak House?

A character like Matt Hancock?

I have a Pavlovian response of panic when Hancock appears, which is probably planned.

I meant your aquaintence, although Dickens must have some Hancockesque character amongst his works...

dingit · 23/12/2020 14:55

A bit ironic. Just switched the tv on and 'a never ending story' was scheduled 😂

I've been on these threads since the second one (under various names, I change when I think I've overshared and think I've outed myself).
  • work in a hospital
  • had Covid
  • not broken any rulez (despite pressure from friends and family to do so)
So how the feck can we be Covid deniers? Grin
LadyOfTheImprovisedBath · 23/12/2020 14:56

up to 50 to 60 percent.....I thought it was 70

I was looking for the source of the 70% - bbc seem to have found it.
www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-55388846 -

The figure mentioned by Prime Minister Boris Johnson was that the variant may be up to 70% more transmissible. He said this may be increasing the R number - which indicates if an epidemic is growing or shrinking - by 0.4.

That 70% number appeared in a presentation by Dr Erik Volz, from Imperial College London, on Friday.

During the talk he said: "It is really too early to tell… but from what we see so far it is growing very quickly, it is growing faster than [a previous variant] ever grew, but it is important to keep an eye on this."

There is no "nailed on" figure for how much more infectious the variant may be. Scientists, whose work is not yet public, have told me figures both much higher and much lower than 70%.

But there remain questions about whether it is any more infectious at all.

"The amount of evidence in the public domain is woefully inadequate to draw strong or firm opinions on whether the virus has truly increased transmission," said Prof Jonathan Ball, a virologist at the University of Nottingham.

Reedwarbler · 23/12/2020 14:57

Has anyone else got terrible rain? It is almost completely dark here too.
Went to collect my turkey this morning and had to queue for an hour and a half! (Very popular butcher). Time passed quickly as we were all chatting in the queue, and agreed it was the most chatting outside our families we'd done in ages, and what a pleasant change it made.
I think I've said it here before, but I remember the days of convalescence after an illness. I was a really sickly kid (no MMR then) and you always had a few days at home when you were recovered, eating well, resting, no stress, early nights etc. It seems to me that should now be recommended after having covid. I do wonder how many post viral syndromes occur because people these days are forced back into work/school too soon and before their bodies are ready. There seems to such pressure to not have any school or work absences at all.

thenightsky · 23/12/2020 15:01

@Reedwarbler

Yes, lashing it down and it doesn't seem have got light at all today. I've had to have lights on all day.

Can sympathise with the long queue for the butchers. Yesterday I queued for 40 mins to get into the local (very excellent) specialist cheese shop. I'm not sure I'd have done it in the rain!

Agree too about the convalescence period... very good idea. It was common-place back in my childhood days of the 60s and 70s.

LadyOfTheImprovisedBath · 23/12/2020 15:03

It hasn't stopped raining since I got up - been dark and wet all day.

We did the last of the food shopping yesterday and getting wrapping paper so have been able to stay in today.

There seems to such pressure to not have any school or work absences at all.

I also wonder if this is part of the problem - too many workplaces with draconian sick rules and schools under pressue to have high attendance figures - with no regaed to fact time in school and good results is a causation not correlation.

Plibber · 23/12/2020 15:09

Our lovely plumber is going to drop round a couple of heaters tomorrow (he's meant to be on holiday today until the new year). I doubt we'd get anyone round any more quickly, really.

We do have a Quooker tap in the kitchen, so we can at least get hot water from that. Looks like it'll have to be quick "bits & pits" washes at the kitchen sink - just as well we're banned from hosting any family!

I wonder if visits to my parents' house to shower will be against the roolz...

On the plus-side, there was no queue to get into our Sainsbury's and no queue at the Argos counter, so I do at least have another radiator.

Sonicthehedgehogg · 23/12/2020 15:17

Sorry, NCR:
Just going through DH's stocking and it's sparse at best Blush any last minute ideas?
I'm working tomorrow so only have this PM to get anything else. Heeelppp!

Sonicthehedgehogg · 23/12/2020 15:18

@Plibber What a lovely plumber. Hope you get it sorted soon.

FeelsLikeGroundhogDay · 23/12/2020 15:25

I caved and watched Hancocks press conference, wasnt as bad as I thought ( national lockdown from boxing day ) but almost. More areas going into the new tier 4 on boxing day, and others going into tier 3, Cornwall into tier 2. And not because of a rise in cases but because they are predicting there will be a rise, so more flimsy as best evidence. Still I suppose the silver lining is that it might improve the chances of the christmas single Boris Johnson is a fucking cunt getting to #1 on christmas day as they've just ruined yet more Christmas'....

LadyOfTheImprovisedBath · 23/12/2020 15:28

Sonicthehedgehogg - previous years when I've had that I've headed to the Tesco Met at end of road. They've often had alcohol - mixed tins -spirts and many times gift box things of smellies. More to bulk out what I've already got him which is more personal and unique.

So a big supermarket would probably be best bet - should still have gift items in.

Iheartmysmart · 23/12/2020 15:29

@Plibber Poor you. I hope you get sorted soon. That’s really kind of your plumber to drop off some heaters. I remember our boiler packing up just before Christmas one year and we were in the middle of building works which were well off schedule because of bad weather. No hot water or heating and we didn’t have external dining room wall, just tarpaulin. That was a grim time.

Sonicthehedgehogg · 23/12/2020 15:32

Yes, I think that's where I'll end up. Home Bargains was already done and B&M brings me out in a rash Grin DH doesn't really like stuff-for-stuff's sake but it really is looking a bit lacking box of cereal should bulk it out nicely

Tier 4 creeping closer to us, but not quite. Feeling a bit heavy hearted today. Very little hope on the horizon and no reassurance amongst the doom-plopping.

LadyOfTheImprovisedBath · 23/12/2020 15:38

Amazon gift card might be another option - you can send to e-mail addresses but not so great for having something to open on the day.

Or if you have a kindle - kindle books but again nothing to open.

They may still be doing next day delivery - but I'm not sure that would get there - and it's probably only online shop that stands a chance.

We did order this morning a de-humidifier now water board have stopped the leak that was draining though our shed and that is supposed to be coming tommorow.

thenightsky · 23/12/2020 15:41

Are you a fellow Smart car driver?

AcornAutumn · 23/12/2020 16:25

Is Johnson still speaking later on?

I can’t keep up.

MaudesMum · 23/12/2020 16:36

Oh brilliant, Somerset is now in Tier 3. As far as I can work out, apart from Pubs/Restaurants being closed except for takeawy the main change is that we can no longer socialise in our gardens. But since it has been pissing with rain for weeks (and shows no sign of letting up), that's not really going to be an issue.
