What are the classes in your kids primary school named after?

When I was a child they were just classes 1-9. Now they have cool and funky names. My kids' school names them after scientists. What are yours called?

Trees and constellations. My two are in Willow and Hydra.

AradiaGC · 15/12/2020 08:12

Primary schools I've worked in have had trees, and colour + number, so Reception was Red 1 and Red 2.

The secondary school I went to used ancient civilisations - Romans, Spartans, Carthaginians. Two for each year group, with numbers. You'd keep the name throughout the school, so 7 Romans 2 would become 8 Romans 2 when they moved to year 8.

YourStarlessEyes · 15/12/2020 08:12

It's just the name of the year at DCs school. Year 1, 2, 3, etc

Isn't this really confusing for everyone? 'my kid is in giraffe'. I've only just got my head around the year 1-6 system (it was infant and junior in my day).

We just have numbers - year 1.
Easier to tell friends' kids ages that way too.

Planes - link to the local economy

jennymac31 · 15/12/2020 08:44

Music genres e.g. Rock, classical etc.

scissy · 15/12/2020 08:45

Ours is also year group + teacher's initial. It's mostly fine except they DD's school change the class name during the year if (say) a teacher goes on parental leave which happened to us which is a bit confusing.

ImNotWhoYouThinkIam · 15/12/2020 08:46

DC are at secondary now and secondary schools are boring.
DS1s tutor groups are 7.1, 7.2, 8.1, 8.2 etc. The first number being their year group.
DS2s are split into R (red), G (green) and either blue or yellow i think. Each colour has 2 or 3 tutor groups. So they are 7R1, 8G2 etc.

Their primary school used to be the year group it was followed by the teachers initials, so 1GB would be year 1, taught by Georgia Brown for eg. With the exception of nursery (squirrels) and reception class (badgers)
Then they expanded and had some building work done. The classes are now all named after animals. Nursery and year R have stayed the same.
Lower school are mythical creatures, unicorns, griffins, phoenixes and dragons.
Middle and upper school are all birds, pelicans, nightingales, kingfishers etc, with year 6 being eagles and owls.

Apparently they are all animals that appear in the bible but I'm not 100%sure on that. The person who told me has form for making random stuff up and seeing how many people believe it.Hmm

Colours

LadyCatStark · 15/12/2020 09:15

Trees as are the streets around the school.

DappledThings · 15/12/2020 09:19

Animals.

Even back in the early 80s when I started infant school our classes were named after colours

ExclamationPerfume · 15/12/2020 10:10

Ours were just numbers. Now they use the previous Bishops names.

BearSoFair · 15/12/2020 10:41

Just year and the teachers initials. Another local school uses birds, recpetion start out as sparrow, canary etc and by year 6 they're kestrel, merlin, and other birds of prey! Grin

@ImNotWhoYouThinkIam
Dragons & unicorns are in the Bible; the Phoenix is in the Septuagint (& the Vetus Italia/Vulgate that St Jerome produced from it) but didn’t make it to the King James (nor, obviously, the versions that follow from it), which is what most English-speakers think of as “The Bible”. The Griffin, however, is not - you’re not allowed to eat griffon vultures, but they’re very much a different thing altogether from the creature of Greek myth.

I’m not sure about your normal!birds - I’d be surprised if eagles didn’t get a look in (above knowledge came from a mealtime conversation with some theology students when I was at university & apparently my brain decided it was Important Information To Keep Forever Hmm ) - possibly the online Bible website(s) will let you keyword search if you’re bothered? (It strikes me as such a deeply unkind thing to do, making a habit of trying to see how many people will believe her lies - this one apparently with a side of “I’m so clever that i. people will believe what I say & ii. it’s ok to laugh at people I consider my intellectual inferiors” - that it bothered me enough to reply to you Blush )

DontGoIntoTheLongGrass · 16/12/2020 09:49

Animals
Elephants
Giraffes
Honeybees
Cats
Spiders
Unicorns Grin
And so on...

ImNotWhoYouThinkIam · 16/12/2020 09:54

@MarieVanGoethem the person who told me they were all biblical (and had form for seeing how many people believed his lies) was a Vicar Grin

MarieVanGoethem · 16/12/2020 10:00

@ImNotWhoYouThinkIam
Well that’s... special... Confused
Adds a definite extra ew to the Seeing How Many People Believe Their Lies thing, with the bit with their literal job involves people being able to trust them. Jesus wept. Probably literally.

theconstantinoplegardener · 16/12/2020 10:01

At my DC's primary school, the classes are named after fruits. Apple, banana, kiwi etc.

Angel2702 · 16/12/2020 10:17

Trees

SparklingDinosaurs · 16/12/2020 10:18

Two form entry so teacher initial eg year 3 Miss Smith is 3S. There are two teachers with same surname teaching same year group so those are identified by first initial too ie 6MT for Mary Thomas and 6JT for James Thomas year 6 classes. All seems okay to me. I noticed before the teachers were allocated the classes were listed 1a 1b 2a 2b etc etc etc. When did this go out of fashion? We always had A and B class in our two form entry school. The older kids were in A and younger in B. My DC school so till split the children into the two classes by ages mainly.

Trees

OhMsBeliever · 16/12/2020 10:20

Trees! 4 different schools and they were all trees.

One then changed to artists.
