I accidentally spent £100 on booze

Whoops. I have a Tesco delivery coming today which I was going to cancel as I managed to do my weekly (and choc full of healthy, and nutritious food only) shop yesterday. They’ve 25% off 6 bottles of wine at the mo’ so I’d flung in 12 bottles of low calorie fizzy wine to amuse myself before I cancelled the order. Oh yeah, I’m not smart sometimes...

Only I forgot to cancel the order didnt I??? Woke up at 7am with the dreaded realisation! At 10 they’re bringing me my booze. And I bet you’re thinking, ‘don’t worry - they’ll make lovely gifts’ but the low calorie aspect means actually they’d kind of be an insult if I regifted them!

I live on my own and only drink in company so it’ll be ages before I get through this lot! How long does fizzy wine even keep for...?

Anyone else hate those ‘omg, I’m a twat’ moments...?

Ps: it’s not the end of the world all this btw. I’m luckily financially comfortable but normally a bit thrifty so whilst I’m annoyed at myself,
it won’t mean I have to turn off the heating or sell the Xmas turkey.

Was it to secure your shopping slot? Next time put in two bottles of gin or a good bottle of champagne!!

theresagiantonthebeach · 12/12/2020 07:32

Lol. .I am going to do that one day. You don't have to accept it.,but if you do you could donate to local school for bottle raffle?
I once forgot entirely that sainsbury were delivering..it was summer and we were in the garden and didn't hear them. .They just refunded me the whole lot.

Teenytinyvoice · 12/12/2020 07:33

DHdid this. Held with a single box of tomatoes. We were able to phone and cancel

@actiongirl1978 it was. But I also was playing make believe a little - ‘what would it feel like if I was the type of woman who ordered 12 bottles of booze?’. I’m not right, am I? Confused

Do you actually like low calorie wine? If not, decline the order when the guy arrives.
If you like the stuff, well, Merry Christmas!

ExplodingCarrots · 12/12/2020 07:35

Can you give it back to the driver for a refund ? I've done this before with 6 bottles of Prosecco Grin. The driver says it's very common and it's mostly booze people save their shopping slot with.

midnightstar66 · 12/12/2020 07:35

Oh gosh OP, put something decent in your basket next time 😆. I'd probably send it back. Driver will still get paid. Don't think there will be many bottle raffles happening this year.

XmasIn24 · 12/12/2020 07:38

Can you not just return it for a refund?

wowfudge · 12/12/2020 07:39

This is why I always put a couple of bottles of gin in my basket to save a slot. If I forget at least it's something worth drowning your sorrows with Gin

RupertRupertTheBear · 12/12/2020 07:39

Oh I've done this. Just explain to the driver and they'll take it all back. If you've got time, phone customer services and they might be able to stop the driver coming out.
Do not take in 12 bottles you don't want!

itoohaveopinions · 12/12/2020 07:39

Giant and teeny: I’ve tried phoning but they said it’s too late to get hold of the delivery person. I might try and explain to the delivery person when they get here.

I also suspect they may not actually have all 12 bottles in stock. And possibly I can get some/all of them refunded at some point...though I’d look like but of an idiot doing it! ‘Hi I ordered these, but um, need to return them as I’m an idiot’. Or possibly I could make something up. Not that the staff care I s’pose!

Thanks all! You’re making me feel less like an idiot and that there will be a good solution!!

Just say you meant to order one and didn’t realise you ordered so many. Unfortunately this is the type of thing I do every now and again, people are usually okay about it Grin

greenspacesoverthere · 12/12/2020 07:43

Refuse delivery. All sorted Thanks

RupertRupertTheBear · 12/12/2020 07:44
Grin Just say to the driver - I'm a total idiot, I forgot to update my shopping, wouldn't it be lovely if this was really my shopping. But it's not, so please take it all back. And don't give it another thought. Honestly, you won't be the first.
Cluckycluck · 12/12/2020 07:44

Try speaking to customer services, they may allow you to take it into store and let you swap it to something more gift appropriate.

MaggieFS · 12/12/2020 07:45

Apologise and reject them at the door.

BigusBumus · 12/12/2020 07:45

Last Sunday Morrison's bought me the 4 bottles of Baileys I'd used to secure the delivery and forgotten to change. We will be drinking a Bailey's till next summer 😂

LittleMissNaice · 12/12/2020 07:46

See what turns up. Keep 6, send 6 back.

SimonJT · 12/12/2020 07:47

This happened to me in March, I used to secure my ocado slot by putting £50 of lager in my basket. In late March you were unable to ammend your orders.

We were having to self isolate so couldn’t go shopping, so as much as I loved my delivery of lager actual food would have been nice. Instead we had to eat takeaway for almost a full week, tasty and great not to cook and minimal washing up, but my bank balance was not happy.

WhyDoYouAsk · 12/12/2020 07:49

Only because I have tried and failed to get a weekend delivery slot for months, this thread has pissed me off. What a waste of a slot...

Other than that, the delivery driver will take it back - just refuse delivery and tell them it was a mistake or, as others have said, drown your sorrows! 😅

Plsv87 · 12/12/2020 07:51

You can send it back. When the delivery driver arrives, just say you ordered in error and need to return it. They will take it away and refund you.

I accidentally ordered a £180 shop from Tesco to be delivered to my house instead of the place I was on holiday. DH was home thankfully and he just returned it all at the door.

RedRiverShore · 12/12/2020 07:53

I would return the wine but keep the shopping as surely a lot will be cupboard stuff anyway or freezable for over Christmas

Redwinestillfine · 12/12/2020 07:53

If you really can't face them go out! If they can't deliver because you're not there the wine will get returned to the shop and to will get a refund.....

grumpytoddler1 · 12/12/2020 07:55

Yes, you can refuse delivery, although I've tried on numerous occasions to return a bottle of champagne I bought by accident from Morrisons (like everyone else, I used it to hold my delivery slot), and they say they're not accepting returns of alcohol at the moment. I'm not sure why they believe there is more covid on alcohol than on any other product...
