I accidentally spent £100 on booze

Whoops. I have a Tesco delivery coming today which I was going to cancel as I managed to do my weekly (and choc full of healthy, and nutritious food only) shop yesterday. They’ve 25% off 6 bottles of wine at the mo’ so I’d flung in 12 bottles of low calorie fizzy wine to amuse myself before I cancelled the order. Oh yeah, I’m not smart sometimes...

Only I forgot to cancel the order didnt I??? Woke up at 7am with the dreaded realisation! At 10 they’re bringing me my booze. And I bet you’re thinking, ‘don’t worry - they’ll make lovely gifts’ but the low calorie aspect means actually they’d kind of be an insult if I regifted them!

I live on my own and only drink in company so it’ll be ages before I get through this lot! How long does fizzy wine even keep for...?

Anyone else hate those ‘omg, I’m a twat’ moments...?

Ps: it’s not the end of the world all this btw. I’m luckily financially comfortable but normally a bit thrifty so whilst I’m annoyed at myself,
it won’t mean I have to turn off the heating or sell the Xmas turkey.

You don’t need to fill the basket to £40 in order to secure the slot at Tesco, it can be under £40 and they just warn you that you’ll have to pay an extra £4. For future reference!

gettingusedtothelimelight · 12/12/2020 07:57

I just don't get this.

With Tesco (not sure about other supermarkets) you can secure your slot with anything - no minimum amount. It says you'll be charged a min fee but this is removed once you go over the threshold.

I secure my slot with 2 pints of milk 😂

MahMahMahMahCorona · 12/12/2020 07:57

Once telephoned and put in an order which included a dozen lemons from a local farm shop, when I went to collect they had two dozen (honeydew) melons waiting for me. I had to decline!!

You can save a shop with Tesco with just one low value item, no need to spend £40, though there is a £4 surcharge if you forget to top up to £40, with Waitrose I generally just save a slot with a previous weeks shopping then at least if I forgot or the internet went down it is fairly reasonable

Cheesewine · 12/12/2020 07:59

I've been looking for this wine everywhere and have been ordering it on Amazon lol. Send it over !

TriflePudding · 12/12/2020 07:59

Don’t worry OP this has happened to me on occasion, just tell the delivery driver you don’t want the delivery.

caringcarer · 12/12/2020 08:01

I once saved my slot with coffee which was on offer for £5 so ended up with 8. It did keep though.

Naughtylittleflea · 12/12/2020 08:05

I once did this with 7kg of bananas which I pretended I needed at the door but then another time I filled my basket with wigs (nr Halloween) and when they arrived I asked him to return them and said they weren’t what I was expecting 😂

NaughtipussMaximus · 12/12/2020 08:10

Everyone who says they secure their slot with booze - why don’t you just import a previous order into the basket? It takes two minutes and then on the offchance you do forget (and ignore the text they send to remind you the day before), at least you’ll get a delivery of stuff you’ll use.

Bookworming · 12/12/2020 08:14

YABU for ordering low calorie with be even if it's just to hold your basket!

Use gin like I do!

😂

JMG1234 · 12/12/2020 08:18

I bought a vegan pannetone by mistake as a gift this week in-store at Tesco. They let me return it when I went back a couple of days later. I'm sure they'll let you return the alcohol in store if you're able to get there.

Labobo · 12/12/2020 08:25

Prepping for post-brexit when we will need to order Continental wine ten years in advance etc. Grin

Also if anyone gave me wine that was sparkling and low calorie I would love them. Didn't know it existed.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 12/12/2020 08:27

No problem.

Just send it back.

ClashCityRocker · 12/12/2020 08:31

Is the low calorie wine even that low calorie? I remember buying one advertised on Facebook (I know...) and whilst it advertised itself as low calorie, it was literally a handful of calories lower than most normal wine.

And tasted of arse. And had a comparatively low alcohol content, so the same impact could have been achieved by having a normal white wine and soda, for fewer calories.

Whyistheteacold · 12/12/2020 08:34

I had no idea people do this to secure a slot... No wonder I haven't been able to get a delivery slot since the summer 🙄🙃

BabyMoonPie · 12/12/2020 08:35

We did this - driver brought 3 bottles of vodka! Rang customer service who told us to take them back to a store for a refund. Felt like a right wally!

BebeStevens · 12/12/2020 08:36

I loved finding out that Tesco let you add an entire shop to the basket like naughti said... I add the roughly the same week from the previous month and it's generally OK even if I forget to sort it

I think I’d confuse myself and think I’d done the shopping!

How does that make any difference? If you put wine in to secure it and come back to do your shopping compared to adding all your proper items at the time of booking it?

It’s not using more slots.

Frenchdressing · 12/12/2020 08:39

I’m interested in low calorie fizz........what make is it?

Lalliella · 12/12/2020 08:40

You can send anything back from your order that you like. Even your whole order. I just got one with only the 12 items I’d put in it to secure the booking because I forgot to check out when I did the full order, so I had to pay the extra fee. Delivery man said I could cancel the whole thing if I wanted. (I didn’t, because I would’ve felt bad.)

underneaththeash · 12/12/2020 08:41

OP - I did this with two bottles of gin a few years ago. I must have looked like a complete alcoholic when the delivery driver showed up!

Lalliella · 12/12/2020 08:42

I have 2 orders secured for my mum at Christmas currently with only one banana in each. I’d better remember to amend them and check out otherwise they’ll be very expensive bananas!

Heifer · 12/12/2020 08:44

I don't wish to be a killjoy but you can actually phone up and cancel your order.. I "may" have done similar myself with yet another bottle of Whisky used to hold my slot and then forgot to actually put any food in the order. You can phone after 8.00am :-)

Of course disregard this information if you actually want the booze :-)

actiongirl1978 · 12/12/2020 08:45

As per previous poster... Do you actually like it? I didn't know there was such a thing as 'low cal fizzy wine'! Do you mean prosecco or cava or something?

Are you seeing anyone over Xmas you can share it with!?

But I gave an accidental bottle of gin back to ocado last week. Told them it must have been a mistake as I'd never order that brand of gin 😉
