... whilst waiting to see if the kids are or are not going to school next week and walking with imaginary cows.

Surely a positive HIV test is a big deal, & potentially has far more long term consequences than a mild dose of covid? It stays on health records forever. Were there not stories about HIV+ people who couldn't get insurance or mortgages because of their medical history, even though the prognosis is now far better than 30 years ago?

@AcornAutumn
I hope today is a tad better for you.

AcornAutumn · 11/12/2020 10:08

Thank you Orchid

Orangeblossom77777 · 11/12/2020 10:09

Must remember not to get involved in any EU threads, similar to over there..

Yes was going to try a vaccine trial and it said it was based on the Ebola virus which I have to say worried me a little!

I'm feeling hopeful for the Oxford one.

BogRollBOGOF · 11/12/2020 10:17

How can one school have such an issue with plates and cutlery. The NHS, cafés, care homes and every other educational establishment copes and it always was a good idea to wash them from one day to the next.

We know that surface transmission is far lower than first thought. Why are schools so obsessed with it still.

Like the school bags. I can get that they want to minimise time cramped in the cloakroom corners, but secondary pupils cope with bags under the desk. The banon school bags means that we are handling objects like fruit snacks, reading records and water bottles far more than normal. Plus dropping them on the playground because I don't have enough hands.

BogRollBOGOF · 11/12/2020 10:21

The Oxford vaccine sounds like the most practical one for mainstream distribution.

We had a chinnok fly low over the house the other day, I wondered if that might be used for distrubuting it to the hospital.

Last week the air ambulance only just cleared the garden, circling around the house as it landed on the school field 250m away. There was an incident a couple of streets away.
I asked DS2 if anything exciting happened and he told me about his colouring in... he'd forgotten about the helicopter landing at school Grin

TabbyStar · 11/12/2020 10:36

We've seen chinooks a few times in the last few months. I think Flightradar24 said one was USAF. No idea what they were doing, I don't recall ever seeing them before here.

Blobby10 · 11/12/2020 10:47

My son is an engineer on Chinooks - he hates them with a passion Grin!! wants to work on the big transporter planes Grin. I find them amazing machines - how they can be so manoeuvrable whilst so big and cumbersome ?!!

Give me 4.5 hours and I'll ask DS1... it might take us to page 40 though. Grin It's his thing. Amazing what you can learn from the Smithsonian Channel and youtube. It's not been a totally wasted year educationally, just that it's not necessarily in line with a Govian education system that cares more about fronted adverbials and sub-clauses...
Orangeblossom77777 · 11/12/2020 11:10

Not sure about this, any thoughts?

AstraZeneca has announced that will begin recruiting people aged 18 and over for trials combining the AstraZeneca and Oxford University vaccine with Russia's Sputnik V, produced by the Gamaleya Institute research facility in Moscow.

The aim is to see if this helps to boost people's immune response and improve protection from the virus.

Orangeblossom77777 · 11/12/2020 11:11

My initial thoughts is that the Russian vaccine sounds a bit dodgy in terms of trials etc, also were they not at one point sneakily copying Oxford or something? Oh I'm not sure. But can they really trust them...

Worldgonecrazy · 11/12/2020 11:19

@LivinLaVidaLoki I think I love you. Great response!

And to whichever poster it was feeling bogged down by responsibility, adopt the mantra “You are not responsible for other peoples happiness.” You can support them to find their own, but ultimately it is on them.

Worldgonecrazy · 11/12/2020 11:28

I missed the pronouncements last night and Apple and BBC news have decided Brexshit and Barbara Windsor are more interesting. What did I miss?

Worldgonecrazy · 11/12/2020 11:32

Forgot to add:

Christmas NHS advert makes me want to scream THE NHS IS NOT A FUCKING CHARITY!!!!

smallandimperfectlyformed · 11/12/2020 11:54

@Jourdain11 I am so sorry that you are having such a horrible time (your daughter does sound hilarious!). Chemotherapy and being stuck in hospital is grim enough at the best of times but this is particularly rubbish.
@LivinLaVidaLoki well done to you for actually standing up to your friend, she definitely sounds like one of those awful medical people I was complaining about in the last thread. Glad another friend told her off too so you know it wasn't just you annoyed by it. Poor friend 1 having her happy post spoiled!
Sorry to anyone struggling, it does feel relentless and joy sapping at the moment but I do feel that the tide is turning a little bit. I am excited as I have booked myself a haircut for the first time in years and it's at a posh (to me!) salon and I have 25% off as a new customer. She sounded lovely on the phone!

Orangeblossom77777 · 11/12/2020 12:04

NHS ad is awful. Worldgonecrazy mainly stuff about testing in schools I think. Most also remember not to try and have rational discussions on things like vaccines over there. It doesn't work.

NastyBlouse · 11/12/2020 12:41

Checking in.

Urgh, that ad. So manipulative. What is it about people needing to have OTT saccharinity (if that's a word) spoon-fed to them at Christmastime? Will the nation's marketers not rest until we're all sobbing into our eggnog? And I agree about the charity angle.

Small things cheering me up (this isn't about autumn leaves or conkers I promise). Saw a small dog in a cone collar today, being taken for a walk. Snuffling at the ground, he looked like a hoover from the Flintstones. Or doggo pretending to be the Pixar lamp. Made me laugh.

Jourdain your DD sounds awesome. There are far worse films to get around an age filter for than The Other Boleyn Girl IMO. At least it's not something puerile like Dirty Grandpa. Sorry you're stuck in hospital with no visitors, sounds rubbish.

Blobby10 · 11/12/2020 12:55

*@Orangeblossom77777 * wasn't Sputnik the first Russian space craft or something? I couldn't take a vaccine seriously if it was named like that! Grin

Blobby10 · 11/12/2020 12:58

@BogRollBOGOF I find Chinooks far more interesting than my son does Grin. Saw one at an air display a few years ago and the way they were swooping and dipping in it made me feel sick - and I was on the ground! Mind you, son isn't really interested in anything work related when outside of work - he thinks I'm very sad having FlightRadar on my phone Grin. he does secretly like it when I track his flight home from overseas though 🥰

110APiccadilly · 11/12/2020 13:33

Just to say that I think Chinooks are awesome. Absolutely amazing machines. One of my favourite aircraft, along with Harrier jump jets, and Tiger Moths.

CruCru · 11/12/2020 13:38

Hi all!

CruCru · 11/12/2020 13:39

My husband read something about London going into Tier 3 next week so we’ve gone for a posh tasting menu lunch (because it might be the last time for a while). We’ve had a load of champagne and I’m a bit pissed.

TabbyStar · 11/12/2020 14:00

Crucru

Enjoy. I hope London doesn't go into tier 3 for the sake of all the businesses it will ruin. We're on the edge of 2 and 3 and trying to debate where to go shopping tomorrow to balance not too busy with toilets (and preferably cafes) open!

Sonicthehedgehogg · 11/12/2020 14:10

Ooh that sounds lush CruCru! That was our favourite thing to do pre-DD. Very jealous!

DominaShantotto · 11/12/2020 14:37

Nothing to say but checking in

TabbyStar · 11/12/2020 14:49

We're out out! Actually sat in a cafe, so exciting! Not supposed to be here so can't share on FB!
