Just catching up with the thread. I'm under so much pressure at work lately I don't know which way is up and I miss popping here for sanity and light relief.

For you @Reedwarbler Thanks

Our local hospital do a weekly update and have been on to say that there is a slight uptick in community cases this week and most are in the very elderly or vulnerable which is a scary place for the hospital.
But I just feel cross that it mostly means that the increase is in care homes. So not really "in the community"
Why oh why when they publish the data do they not say how many are acquired in the community and how many hospitals, care homes and prisons etc. That way surely we know what the general level of risk is?

LivinLaVidaLoki · 16/12/2020 19:26

For your nonna @MercyBooth Thanks

ISaySteadyOn · 16/12/2020 19:40

Flowers for @Reedwarbler and @MercyBooth.

AcornAutumn · 16/12/2020 19:49

Lots of hugs and drinks for those in need.

Now, why didn’t I think of this? 😂

@LivinLaVidaLoki @ISaySteadyOn Thanks Flowers

Did anyone else just see Charles Walker on Channel 4 news?

Lostinacloud · 16/12/2020 20:01

I was blaring out some tunes earlier and really missing the opportunity for a good old dance or a chance to stand in a bar with live music and soak up the atmosphere. Anyone else?
Earlier this summer I was walking the dog in a big park and there was a wedding in the hotel on the island in the lake. There was a full jazz band playing and I found myself tearing up at the sound of real live music and walked the dog about 7 times around the lake! Of course that’s all gone again now Angry

Lostinacloud · 16/12/2020 20:02

Music is good for the soul and for me it’s an important part of good mental health. Always feel better after shouting along to a power Ballard Grin

BogRollBOGOF · 16/12/2020 20:03

Now admittedly in the spring/ summer when one of the DC's teacher's idea of home learning was to set some cover work and share it by taking a photo of her laptop screen and message it to us, I was not too impressed with school (the other teacher was much better, but when you realistically just resort to Bitesize for one child, it's just logistically better doing it with both). But school has been at the better end of not applying additional nonsensical roolz for the hell of it. Today the DCs had Christmas Lunch (although minus crackers) and today the PTA did Santa al-fresco with small batches coming out to see Santa in the playground gazebo with Christmas trees and get a little present (that had of course been quarantined beforehand Confused Grin )

Mask rebellion is creeping in the windswept playground... Grin

BogRollBOGOF · 16/12/2020 20:12

Back about June time, I was in one of those moods struggling with never being alone at home, yet not having stimulating adult company (sorry DH Grin, in his defence 40+ hours a week of being occupied by tecnical engineering stuff and hearing half of it on speaker phone is just not my cup of tea) Anyway, the only alone time was going out for a run. On one 2 hour run, it took an hour for my mood to really shift and the second hour involved a lot of singing along out loud to classic 80s hits Grin

I am more used to DH WFH now. It's easier since September as the DCs aren't around. I'm feeling less inhibited by a constant background presence which is good.

Evenstar · 16/12/2020 20:14

💐 for all in need. So depressed that we are no doubt facing more restrictions after Christmas, but we are going to be blamed again for any rise in cases.

My eldest stepson is an actor and although work is always tricky in that profession this year has been another level. Hospitality has largely been closed which would be his back stop to make some money. I spoke to him the other day and he is really low, although he has potentially got work in a holiday resort for 7 months next summer he has no contract signed. He is worried that it may not happen, he has had to give up his own accommodation and is living under Tier 3 at a family member’s home. He is one of the young people who have lost everything.

Bollss · 16/12/2020 20:23

I just can't believe we're still in this situation. 2021 soon and it feels like march. I want to plan things, book holidays..... We get a vaccine and then....... Fuck all? Like they haven't even barely mentioned it have they? Other than "why don't you wait until granny has got the vaccine before you see her"

Well ds's grandparents are 40s/50s so what should he wait until 2022 or 2023 to see them?

MercyBooth · 16/12/2020 20:25

@Evenstar OF COURSE For actors hospitality is what they usually do between acting jobs. And depending on where they are working they can also maybe do a bit of networking.
They have had BOTH jobs taken away

DominaShantotto · 16/12/2020 20:26

Well school know full well we've not been keeping to "the rules" today - went out to pick up a friend's kid who had got ill during the school day while friend was at an appointment (the kids had an overenthusiastic "dance off" and I think the hair tossing got out of hand and she's pulled her neck muscles)... then I was at the infants picking up the younger sibling later on as friend was stuck at home with hair-tosser ill one!

Not a comment made at all - and the juniors in particular have been ridiculous with covid rules and giving parents shit on the yard for not socially distancing!

Had to giggle though - taking everyone home and on the army base (friend is a military family - lots of them around here as we've got the base near us) and the number of cheapo bamboo screenings to hide the summer of "covid parties" on the fence in the housing area is hilarious!

MercyBooth · 16/12/2020 20:30

THIS!!!

TheOrchidKiller · 16/12/2020 20:46

Ahh, Mercy I hope your DM gets her Christmas.

I'm reading Private Eye. I found it helped back in April but stopped buying it because I thought some aspects of it, especially MD's medical pages were getting a bit dementory. But I'm enjoying the satire tonight. And MD has written quite a sensible bit about risk, & why vaccines should be voluntary.

@Evenstar
I'm sorry for your stepson. I don't think people realise how hard it is for actors to earn a living.

MercyBooth · 16/12/2020 20:52

Oh is that the new issue I will get it tomorrow And YY to the MD stuff

I started buying Private Eye regularly right after Cummingsgate. Prior to that i only bought it intermittently

TheOrchidKiller · 16/12/2020 20:55

Private Eye 18 Dec to 7 Jan issue. The Cummingsgate editions were good.

MercyBooth · 16/12/2020 20:56

Is there anything in there about Grant Shapps and "high value" individuals

SomewhereEast · 16/12/2020 21:05

@TabbyStar

We're a Tory area in tier 3. Next to a Labour city. I still remain v confused about whether there is a review happening!
Ooohhh us too, but in a different part of the country. Our rates have gone steadily down and down and down and even our nearest city is in much better shape....fuck all chance of them letting us out though, Tory MP or not. Its so exhausting and depressing. I have so much sympathy for places which have been living like this for months.

THIS. A thousand times this. It is too outing to describe accurately, but in both my work and personal life (and in one very sad example, a mix of the two) this is spot on.

TheSmallClangerWhistlesAgain · 16/12/2020 21:58

Sir Charles has hit every nail on the head. He has articulated how I and many others are feeling.

I'm not okay with my (and others') mental health being seen as acceptable collateral in this willy-waving (nicking CW's imagery) battle to get Covid numbers down. Because it is about numbers, it's nothing to do with people.

I'll be doing battle with the Drs surgery tomorrow again too. I have all of the symptoms of PID now and I need to be seen.

Taswama · 16/12/2020 22:11

A late thanks for the Hamlet clip Acorn , I can't believe I hadn't seen that before!

MissEWeatherwax · 16/12/2020 22:18

I am happy re Christmas bubbles and my DF is having first dose of covid vaccine next week. It’s good I’m not seeing my DM because I bet she is furious, he is first.

Taswama · 16/12/2020 22:19

Well said Sir Charles - people need social contact, mental health is really important and not every death is a tragedy.
