Kay Burley

So Kay Burley went to a Covid-safe restaurant, nipped to a different restaurant for the loo and then went back to her house with a few others.

To me, the issue was going back to her house with a group (in tier 2) but all the focus seems to be about going to the loo.

What rule did she go break about going to the toilet in a different restaurant? It doesn't mention a mask so I am assuming it's not that she failed to put a mask on?

Asking because I'd probably have done the same thing (also in tier 2) and can't see what the problem is.

She was socialising indoors, she was in a party of ten at the restaurant and then took some of her guests to her home.

littlequestion · 08/12/2020 12:57

But why is all the emphasis on going to the loo as mentioned in my OP?

I’m not sure, is it technically against the rules because she didn’t go into the venue to eat a meal?

Iamtooknackeredtorun · 08/12/2020 18:56

I think the emphasis is on that because she tweeted an apology for that behaviour. This overlooks the breach of the rule of six, mixed households in restaurants x 2 and having people in your home. For me it's a sacking/resignation matter. She won't be able to hold politicians to account about similar conduct.

zigaziga · 08/12/2020 19:12

Yeah I’m confused too because her apology was only on the second restaurant / loo point (and really who cares, I thought the track and trace app only pings you for prolonged contact so her going somewhere briefly is kind of neither here nor there?).

ItsAlwaysSunnyOnMN · 08/12/2020 19:38

I can’t get over she is 60 she looks great

As for her the rest did a friend inform on her she is hardly all over Twitter and instagram

SimonJT · 08/12/2020 19:40

Plus there were other members of the broadcasting team, yet their names aren’t being publicised as much.

hopeishere · 08/12/2020 19:50

Agree the focus is on that because that's what she tweeted about trying to control the narrative.

EscapeTheCastle · 08/12/2020 19:53

She's very much like like Rita Ora. A perfect balance of stupidly and arrogance. Also, it's not every day you turn 100 years old. Tee Hee.

FractionalGains · 08/12/2020 19:54

I am just so shocked she did it. Not because I’m shocked by rule breaking (which I imagine is widespread) but that she thought she wouldn’t be caught.

I don’t think she was breaking any rules by going into a second place to use the loo, and that apology is just bizarre.

EscapeTheCastle · 08/12/2020 19:56

I can't type, I meant to say, a perfect balance of stupidity and arrogance. Funny.

kittenpeak · 08/12/2020 20:03

"Covid safe restaurant" what does that even mean? Unless they were eating outside and less than 6 of them she broke the rules. But yes weird they're focusing on the loo as the whole evening was bad.

She should be sacked.

Beth Rigby was in the party too - if anyone is to get the sack it's her. She might aswell be Sky's covid correspondent

Notcontent · 08/12/2020 20:14

Her talking about it being a “Covid safe restaurant” and going to the loo - that was just a diversion tactic (unless she is really stupid). Of course the real issue is arranging a dinner out with friends in the first place - and not just one person, but several.

Whatever people might think of the rules, they are there...

EscapeTheCastle · 08/12/2020 21:03

There's only a handful of us commenting on this thread, nicely matching those Sky viewing figures!

derxa · 08/12/2020 21:24

Resign Kay

TramaDollface · 08/12/2020 21:26

I’m more appalled that Beth Rigby was also involved

Bathroom12345 · 08/12/2020 22:09

Honestly these smug people giving politicians a good kicking, interrupting them constantly, talking about ‘my viewers’ as though she owns us.

Yet she has a key slot on Sky. Beth Rigby is just as bad, I would love to see Matt Hancock turn the tables on her, would he butt in on her excuses and not let her speak.

PS I am no fan of Hancock!!

Bathroom12345 · 08/12/2020 22:11

What makes them both think they wouldn’t get found out?

Bathroom12345 · 08/12/2020 22:18

Her birthday is 17 December. Is it a thing that you celebrate weeks before?

chomalungma · 08/12/2020 22:24

Even if a restaurant is Covid-compliant, the rules for Tier 2 are quite simple with eating out.

If it's outside eating, you can eat outdoors in a group of 6 people.
But indoors - it's just you and members of your household or support bubble.

(unless it's work related)

Her twitter explanation doesn't really explain which rule she thinks she's broken.

She must have known

It's ok to pop into another restaurant by yourself - if you are wearing a mask.

So I do wonder exactly what's gone on.

Frazzled2207 · 08/12/2020 22:28

I’ve been really cross about this today. She shouldn’t have been at the restaurant in the first place unless it was outside (possible but seems unlikely). Why do people in the public eye think they can do this and get away with it? Are they daft?

And why the focus on KB? Beth rigby and the others just as guilty. I really thought better of BR.

But don’t get the focus on the loo stop either. I don’t know what rule that breaks. But the restaurant and people in her house, almost definitely.

mocktail · 08/12/2020 22:33

According to some of the papers, the second restaurant was more of a late bar/restaurant and she and the rest of the group possibly spent a couple of hours there. It also wasn't exactly round the corner from the first restaurant which raises the question whether they caught a taxi between the two. I suspect there were multiple breaches during the evening.

chomalungma · 08/12/2020 22:33

I don't get what some people are thinking.

"Would you like to come to a restaurant for my birthday"
"We're in Tier 2, That's not a good idea"

StopMakingATitOfUrselfNPissOff · 08/12/2020 22:40

I’m surprised this had flown so far under the radar.

However it’s spun they’ve broken the rules.

Agree with @chomalungma that I don’t know why so many people went along with it in the first place.

How arrogant to think they’d get away with it (and it unfortunately looks like she has!)

Tootsietootie · 08/12/2020 22:54

What a twat she is. We are managing to hold it in for a few more months. Surely if you are such a public figure you have even more reason.
