My dc have just fallen about laughing, and assured me they've never heard of these. Maybe it's an age think. Anyone know what I mean?

@Cloudhopping

PleasantVille the picture I posted was of Humpty Dumpty from Playschool and I have believed for the last 49 years that she/he was definitely a gonk-please don’t tell me I’m wrong?
I googled @Cloudhopping. and look what popped up Grin

MrsMop1964 · 06/12/2020 17:47

yes because my mum used to make them as a homeworking job- the fumes from the glue could have got you completely off your head

AgentProvocateur · 06/12/2020 17:49

I agree with @Rockbird. That’s a gonk. You’d win it at the shows by throwing a wooden hoop over a wooden oblong.

BestIsWest · 06/12/2020 17:49

I’m 57 and I would call Humpty a gonk.

Cloudhopping · 06/12/2020 17:51

Pleasantville no, no say it isn’t so! What does Kirstie know about gonks anyway-now where is Floella when you need her?

IndigoApple · 06/12/2020 17:52

@VQ1970 your picture is the only one on this thread of what I'd call a gonk! I'm 51 and Scottish. I remember them having a lot of plastic as well as fluff.

Mariebarrone · 06/12/2020 17:52

59 and I know what a gonk is. These days I look into a mirror and see one.

DryRoastPeanut · 06/12/2020 17:52

Humpty was a gonk.

Redruby2020 · 06/12/2020 17:52

Yes a troll like doll

Divebar · 06/12/2020 17:53

Who would have thought this would be so contentious. Smile

HeronLanyon · 06/12/2020 17:54

Over 50. Knew I’d know it when I read it.
Before I was reminded I guessed a type of fish !

Sexnotgender · 06/12/2020 17:54

Late 30s and I know.

LifeOfBriony · 06/12/2020 17:54

@Rockbird

This a gonk (70s baby)
That's what I think of as a gonk.
ChrissyHynde · 06/12/2020 17:55

Rockbird has it ! I was born 1964

Scarby9 · 06/12/2020 17:56

@PragmaticPrinciple
I'm sorry, but that is - or was - a gonk. In my childhood, trolls were warty monsters that lived under bridges in fairy tales. Those plastic figures with outstretched arms and brightly coloured long hair were gonks. At primary school (early 1970s) mine had royal blue hair, and I also found (or maybe appropriated) a pencil topper gonk with green hair.
It is only of recent years that I have heard them called trolls.

IndigoApple · 06/12/2020 17:56

Another picture of what I would call gonks!

OliveHenry · 06/12/2020 17:57

Adding my vote to Rockbird et al - to me a gonk is fully hairy, usually brightly coloured. Born 1970 Grin

Fiftyandmore · 06/12/2020 17:58

Well I'll have to concede that the things I've spent my entire life (mid 50's) calling gonks are in fact trolls! The earth has tilted on its axis!

I clicked on here because I thought it sounded like something dirty 😂

ikltownofboothlehem · 06/12/2020 18:04

I'm with @Time40 - the other things are trolls.

Joolsin · 06/12/2020 18:05

I'm also early 50s and I know what a honk is - I got one for Christmas in 1970something - like this (only mine was neon orange with white fur underneath). I called mine Geoffrey Gonk!! Grin

Eviebeans · 06/12/2020 18:05

I'm 58 and I know - seem to remember them being prizes at the fun fair lol

Joolsin · 06/12/2020 18:06

*gonk - autocorrect clearly doesn't know what a gonk is!!

Rockbird · 06/12/2020 18:07

Fairgrounds were most definitely associated with gonks. Grin
