I'm with you OP! I had a gonk in the early '70s that looked just like your pic but with long blue hair that stood up vertically. I'm 52. There are things around now that look very similar, marketed as trolls.

I do rather like the look of those elfy things with big hats though...

They were marketed as trolls in the mid 60s though.

I'm mid-30s and thought a gonk was a word for a gadget. Like if you need to fix something, you have to get the gonk for it.

These are what I was talking about. What we called gonks in Glasgow in the 70's. Bean filling so you could squish them like a stress reliever toy before they were a thing.

Gonk = small fat pixie-type toy thing with mad sticky-up hair.

This is a Swedish Tomte that I bought in Stockholm many years ago. I look forward to getting him out every year but I'm not keen on the Gonks 😂

I know I used a picture of Humpty from playschool and said it was like the Gonk my mother knitted because it is similar to the gonk my mother knitted - I know it is the humpty from play school.
Here is another picture of gonks from the 60s but what people don't realise is that the gonks were the size of Humpty from playschool, not little midget 4 inch high things - they were big.

Why are there so many things called gonks?! Did every generation have their own gonk? Could we guess people's ages based on what they think a gonk is?

Fwiw I thought the pom poms with googly eyes and sticky feet were gonks (80s baby) and I used to have loads of them, my dad used to bring them home - not quite sure where he was getting them from
