My dc have just fallen about laughing, and assured me they've never heard of these. Maybe it's an age think. Anyone know what I mean?

@Fiftyandmore

This is what I mean
Ah see. That’s is what I could call a troll
GrandOldDuchess · 06/12/2020 16:59

They're everywhere at the moment- little gnome/troll things with the hat over their eyes. I'd never heard the name before (early 30s) and googled it...I think I'll carry on calling them gnomes based on the description for gonk!

This is what I would think you meant if you said a gonk

MrsTwitcher · 06/12/2020 16:59

They had a really distinctive plastic smell about them and you could get mini ones for pencils

heydoggee · 06/12/2020 16:59

A gonk is like a pompom with eyes stuck onto a ribbon, right?

tobee · 06/12/2020 17:00

Yes I still miss my gonk Gonky Peiterson. He never went beat though.

Agree with Brunt

LittleRa · 06/12/2020 17:01

Nooo that’s a troll you’ve posted OP. This is a gonk. They’re a Scandinavian Christmas decoration that’s been gaining popularity over the last few years.

Would you know what the answer was if I asked you what a gonk is?!
SlippersForFlippers · 06/12/2020 17:01

What you posted is what is call a troll from the 90s. To me this is a gonk.

Oops sorry, agree with BruntOn. The picture you posted I'd call a troll. The ones with hats over their eyes are Gonks.

CarolinaWeeper · 06/12/2020 17:03

Agreed with @LittleRa, the picture you have posted is a troll, a gonk is the Scandinavian gnomes...in our house anyway!

WhoseThatGirl · 06/12/2020 17:03

I agree with PP. The picture you posted is a troll. The pointy hat no eyes soft troll thingys are gonks.

That takes me right back, and not in a good way!
Fiftyandmore · 06/12/2020 17:04

@Twinkle71 how much did you pay for your eBay gonk? I just saw one going for £70 odd when I googled for a picture for this thread!

AlizarinRed · 06/12/2020 17:05

Yes, I had one.DM knitted one from a pattern from Woman magazine it looked like the pic but knitted- I think it prob went to be raffled at Scout annual pre-Xmas jumble sale (quite a big deal then) .

@Fiftyandmore

This is what I mean
That is a troll.

Gonks were a bit different (60's/70's at any rate).

The hairy gnomes things are nisses (Danish/Swedish etc.) IKEA sold them in a terracotta form in the late 90's. I have some.

Fiftyandmore · 06/12/2020 17:05

No, when I was little the pic I posted was definitely called a gonk! Maybe the terminology has changed now.

OP posts:
SlopesOff · 06/12/2020 17:05

Yes, the soft cuddly things are gonks.

Divebar · 06/12/2020 17:06

Those with beards are not what I think of a gonk. I either think of a Pom Pom type thing with googly eyes on feet or a plastic type Troll type of doll with sticky up brightly coloured hair - no beards.

Darklane · 06/12/2020 17:06

These are gonks that I remember from back in the seventies when they were all the rage. I made a couple for my dcs

naughtyelfs · 06/12/2020 17:07

I just googled it & christmas gnomes came up. I only know of it as an insult.

Yes! That's a gonk. Like Humpty in the children's programme Play School. He was a gonk.

The picture OP posted is what I would call a troll.
