Would you know what the answer was if I asked you what a gonk is?!

My dc have just fallen about laughing, and assured me they've never heard of these. Maybe it's an age think. Anyone know what I mean?

Trolls were always trolls to me in the 90s

Fiftyandmore · 06/12/2020 17:11

Oh I'm all confused now! We definitely called what I posted gonks not trolls. But that was wales and we also called green beans kidney beans!

I didn't until last year when my husband commented that a woman with dyed purple hair and distinctive facial features looked like a "gonk".

SlippersForFlippers · 06/12/2020 17:12

If you show your children the picture that you posted what do they say it's called?!

Divebar · 06/12/2020 17:12

@AlizarinRed

That’s not a gonk that’s Humpty from Playschool.

Cloudhopping · 06/12/2020 17:12

This is what I remember as being a gonk. I’m 49.

hoochymamgu · 06/12/2020 17:13

Like @Darklane posted, my Mamgu used to make them for my brother and I, round made of felt! 59 and from Wales Grin

Cloudhopping · 06/12/2020 17:13

But Divebar Humpty Dumpty identified as a gonk!

EBearhug · 06/12/2020 17:15

Surely Humpty is meant to be an egg?

@Fiftyandmore

No, when I was little the pic I posted was definitely called a gonk! Maybe the terminology has changed now.
I had both and still have the trolls, the original Dam ones, rubbery creatures with hair. Also animal ones.

I also had a gonk which was a fabric cuddly toy similar to the gonks my friends had. Fabric body a bit like a Humpy Dumpty with arms and legs and round eyes.

I also have a wooden Viking troll which has fur hair.

Plus a pair of Nisses which are the pointy head ones.

They were popular at different times during the 60's and 70's but as time went by people did get confused about them, parents especially, which may have confused their children.

Raera · 06/12/2020 17:17

@Rockbird

This a gonk (70s baby)
Definitely! (60's baby)
Cloudhopping · 06/12/2020 17:18

Ebearhug Yes Humpty was an egg but in the style of a gonk, surely? We need Floella Benjamin to confirm this I think.

MiniTheMinx · 06/12/2020 17:18

NannyGythaOgg · 06/12/2020 17:19

gonk

This is what I had as a gonk as a child. This was about 1965 (as I am now mid 60s)

PassataQueenofBritain · 06/12/2020 17:20

No-one has yet posted a picture of a fink... and I cannot as I'm on my phone!
OP you've posted a troll. The other people have posted nisse (Norwegian) or tomte (Swedish).
Gonks have wooden bodies greyish fluffy hair, they're Danish.

ThatDamnKrampus · 06/12/2020 17:20

[fHmm] I thought it was a slang word for nose (like snoz) ...I'm 40's.

@cloudhopping that is humpty and he is an egg!

Fiftyandmore · 06/12/2020 17:20

It looks like I've been wrong all these years 😯. Although @Changi agrees!

GONK
Sorry my phone autocorrected.

YesItsMeIDontCare · 06/12/2020 17:21

Yes @Rockbird - that is a gonk.

(Also a 70s' baby)

SionnachRua · 06/12/2020 17:21

Those pointy hatted things with long beards you can buy at Christmastime? Only heard the name a few weeks ago - before I just called them "those weird Christmas gnomes". Grin
